198 WOMEN S NATIONAL COLLEGIATE/DIVISION I Summary NATIONAL COLLEGIATE/DIVISION I 2000-01 Championships Highlights Photo by Jamie Schwaberow/NCAA Photos UCLA swept to titles in gymnastics, indoor track and field and the inaugural water polo championship to lead the division for 2000-01. The Bruins increased to 20 their overall team total, moving into a tie for third. Georgia won a pair of trophies for the third straight year, having captured swimming and diving each of those seasons and adding its first crown in golf. North Carolina soccer (16), Stanford tennis (11), Maryland lacrosse (nine) and Old Dominion field hockey (nine) continued dominance in their respective sports, while Colorado cross country garnered the school s first women s team title. Minnesota-Duluth also was a first-time winner during the inaugural ice hockey championship. Stanford claimed eight titles from three separate championships to increase its lead in the individual tables. The Cardinal had six winners in swimming and diving and one each in tennis and outdoor track and field to lift their overall total to 138. Georgia and UCLA also won individual titles in three different sports, with UCLA s five overall crowns matching the Arizona output. Texas maintained second in the all-time listing by capturing four titles. Track and field produced first-time winners of an NCAA individual championship from Boston College (indoor), Jacksonville (indoor) and Idaho (outdoor). UCLA made it back-to-back triumphs in gymnastics, one of three national championships for the Bruins in 2000-01. History Top Winners Team School 1. Stanford... 26 2. North Carolina... 21 3. 202 WOMEN S DIVISION II Summary DIVISION II 2000-01 Championships Highlights Photo by Winslow Townsend/NCAA Photos St. Augustine s doubled the field in 2000-01, winning both the team indoor and outdoor track and field championships. The titles were the Lady Falcons third in each sport and their second straight in outdoor track and field. Lock Haven broke through for its fifth field hockey championship and Cal Poly Pomona took home its fourth crown in basketball but first since 1986. Four schools won their first team titles in the division. C.W. Post captured the inaugural lacrosse championship, while Truman won swimming and diving, Western State won cross country and UC San Diego won soccer in its debut tournament since moving from Division III. Truman nearly doubled its all-time individual haul by winning seven swimming and diving championships to lead the division. The Bulldogs owned eight previous individual titles from three sports before breaking through en route to the team aquatic title. St. Augustine s jumped into third place overall by winning six titles for an all-time total of 51, while Abilene Christian added five more crowns to increase its division-leading figure to 106. Former Division III member UC San Diego was the only first-time winner, taking six championships from the swimming and diving finals. 206 WOMEN S DIVISION III Summary DIVISION III 2000-01 Championships Highlights Photo by Tom Davenport/NCAA Photos Middlebury and Wheaton (Massachusetts) matched a pair of 2000-01 team championships to lead the division. Middlebury captured cross country and lacrosse, while Wheaton swept the indoor and outdoor track and field trophies. Overall team leader College of New Jersey won its 29th title with a last-second victory in soccer, and Methodist remained the only golf champion from Division III with its fifth crown. Denison pulled the surprise of the year by halting Kenyon s 17-year winning streak in swimming and diving. The Big Red s victory was their first NCAA team title in any sport, matching Muskingum s successful triumph in softball. Denison captured 10 individual championships in swimming and diving to lead the division during a year in which seven schools broke through for their first solo trophies. All 22 of Denison s individual titles are from swimming and diving, as are an amazing 180 of Kenyon s division leading 183 overall titles. Williams captured three championships to remain second with 62. Schools claiming their first NCAA individual titles included Hamilton and New Jersey City from indoor track and field; Keene State (two), Linfield, McMurry, Roanoke and Trinity (Connecticut) from outdoor track and field. Middlebury s triumph at the women s cross country championships began a fantastic year for Panther athletics. History Top Winners Team School 1. Col. of New Jersey... 29 2. Kenyon... 20 3.
