HELLO, OLD FRIEND: Last night, former New York Yankees RHP Phil Hughes (W, 2-0) makes a rehab start with the Fort Myers Miracle, holding the Tarpons scoreless in 5.0IP (3H, 0BB, 4K). The current Minnesota Twins hurler pitched for New York from 2007-2013 and played for the Tampa Yankees in parts of the 2005-06 seasons. EXTRA-INNING RULE: The Tarpons played under Minor League Baseball's new extra-inning rule on Tuesday in their 6-5 loss at St. Lucie. This season, extra-innings will begin with a runner at 2B. The runner will be there due to an unrecorded "error" and, should the runner score, the run would be unearned. After Tampa failed to capitalize in the top of the 10th, the Mets used a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly to win the game in the bottom of the frame. ONE-HIT WONDER: On Monday, RHP Nick Green (5.0IP, 1H), LHP Phillip Diehl (2.0IP, 0H) and RHP Matt Frawley (2.0IP, 0H) combined on a one-hitter in Tampa's 5-1 win at St. Lucie. It was the first 9.0-inning one-hitter by Tampa pitchers since 8/13/17 against St. Lucie at George M. Steinbrenner Field: RHP Taylor Widener (5.0IP, 0H), LHP Stephen Tarpley (2.0IP, 0H), RHP David Sosebee (1.0IP, 1H), RHP Joe Harvey (1.0IP, 0H). VS. FORT MYERS: This will be the third of 12 scheduled meetings between the Tampa Tarpons and Fort Myers Miracle. The season-series is currently tied, 1-1. Tampa finished 11-6 vs. Fort Myers in 2017, including 5-4 at George M. Steinbrenner Field and 6-2 at Hammond Stadium. SPLASH FROM THE PAST: The Tampa Tarpons are back for the first time since 1987. Over the offseason, the Tampa Yankees rebranded by becoming the Tarpons. The original Tampa Tarpons played baseball at Al Lopez Park (current site of Raymond James Stadium) from 1957-1987, winning Florida State League championships in 1957 and 1961. TOP PROSPECTS: Tampa's opening day roster includes five names on the Baseball America Top-30 Yankees Prospects List: OF Estevan Florial (2), RHP Freicer Perez (13), RHP Trevor Stephan (18), RHP Jonathan Loaisiga (25) and INF Diego Castillo (28). OSBORN RETURNS: Patrick Osborn returns to George M. Steinbrenner Field this sesaon as the first manager of the newly rebranded Tampa Tarpons. Osborn managed the T-Yanks in 2016, winning the Florida State League Manager of the Year award after leading Tampa to its first postseason birth since 2010. Last season, Ozzy led the Single-A Charleston RiverDogs to the playoffs, extending his personal postseason streak to seven-straight seasons: 2015 short-season, Single-A Staten Island, 2014 Gulf Coast League Yankees 2 and 2011-13 Atlantic League Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. 2017 RECAP: Last season, the T-Yanks (85-50) set a new franchise record with 85 regular-season wins, surpassing the 1996 Tampa team that finished 84-50. The Yankees also won both halves of the FSL North Division Standings for the first time in franchise history. The pitching staff set the new FSL single-season strikeout record with 1,215. That broke the mark set by the 2010 Charlotte Stone Crabs (1,189 K in 139 games). Tampa fell short of the FSL co-championship, falling to the Dunedin Blue Jays, two games to one, in the semifinal. TARPONS TO HOST 2018 FSL ALL-STAR GAME: For the first time in franchise history, Tampa will play host to the Florida State League All-Star Game. Neither the original Tarpons nor the Tampa Yankees had ever hosted the event. The 2018 FSL All-Star Game will be played on Saturday, June 16th at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
