From the decorations to the program to the reception it was a great night. The Achievement Night Committees really outdid themselves this year! In November we also sent 5 youth to Kansas Youth Leadership Forum at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Seth, Shaina, Taylor, Rachel and Karsyn had a great time learning about leadership, and meeting new 4-H friends from across the state. State events are a great way for older 4-H members to get more involved in 4-H and take their leadership skills to the next level. There is an article about the Northeast Leadership Forum in this chatterbox. As we enter the end of this calendar year I will make one pitch for looking at the achievement pin application that you will be working on for 2017-2018. As youth get older in the 4-H program receiving your achievement pin has more requirements. It is best to look at them now and it will help you plan the 4-H work you do for the year. The pin applications can all be found on our website at: http://www.shawnee.k-state.edu/4-h/record-booksachieve-pins/ I hope everyone has Happy Holidays this month. If your club carols or does community service this time of year please send pictures to the office. We can post them on our Facebook page! ~Candis Sweet! Baking Supply is offering a 10% discount for all Shawnee County 4-H members. They are located in Fairlawn Plaza-inside the mall. They are requiring proof of membership, proof can be provided by wearing a 4-H T-Shirt. If you do not have a 4-H T-Shirt other acceptable proof could be: reciting the 4-H pledge, stating your clubs name, or explaining the 4 H s of 4-H (Head, Heart, Hands, Health). 1

Bunny Bunch, Dec. 4th (Not meeting at EMR) Exchange, Dec. 7th Events Council Meeting, Dec. 14th Mark Your Calendar! County Club Days, Feb. 17th Regional Club Days, Mar. 24th Clothing Cares, Dec. 21st Office Closed/Christmas, Dec. 22nd-25th Office Closed/New Years, Jan. 1st January Jamboree, Jan. 6th Livestock Educational Meeting, Jan. 7th Important Change for Shawnee County Livestock Sale STOP! If you are planning to sell animals at the 2018 SNCO Fair you MUST read this! The Shawnee County Livestock committee has asked the Shawnee County Extension Board to require educational classes for youth wanted to sell their animals during the Shawnee County Fair Livestock Sale. Since 4-H s primary concern is education the board has agreed to this request. For the 2018 Shawnee County Fair youth will be required to attend 2 livestock project meetings. Three classes will be offered by the Livestock Committee. The first is a selection and feeding meeting. That will be January 7th at the Extension Office Meeting room, the time is still to be determined. The second meeting will be on showmanship and show ring tips and tricks, that date will be before the Shawnee County Spring Show. The final class is how to be successful at a livestock sale. It will cover how to approach buyers, how to thank them and how to prepare your animal. Again, all youth who wish to sell beef, goats, swine and sheep will be required to attend two of the three project meetings. All three will be helpful to youth in livestock market projects. Youth who wish to sell meat pens of rabbits or poultry are required to attend the last livestock sale class only. Please watch chatterbox and your e-mail for the remaining dates for the project meetings. 2

January Jamboree Events Council invites youth to our annual January Jamboree Craft Event. January Jamboree is an event where youth can come and make various crafts for a small fee ranging in price from free to $3. Examples of past crafts are birdfeeders, kaleidoscopes, greeting cards and painted tiles just to name a few! This is a great event to invite your friends to and they can learn about 4-H while making crafts. All youth are welcome! January Jamboree is January 6th, 1pm to 3pm at Countryside United Methodist Church, 3221 SW Burlingame Rd. (South entrance). Concessions will also be available at the event. There is a flyer to share with your friends and neighbors on our county website (shawnee.k-state.edu), and on pg. 9 of the Chatterbox. All clubs are asked to provide one craft for the January Jamboree event. Please fill out and return the form below to the 4-H office by December 20th. You can email your clubs information to cshobkirk@ksu.edu. Set-up will begin at 12:30 on the 6th. January Jamboree Activity Sign-up- Name of Club: Contact: Activity / Craft: Cost ($): * can be free to $3 (only to cover cost of materials) # of tables needed: Electrical needs? Join the Fun On December 21st Kansas Day is just around the corner and you know what that means.. we need your help in making bread in a bag kits. We will be putting together bread in a bag kits for School Enrichment Thursday, December 21st at 1:00pm in the upstairs meeting room. We are looking for about 12 volunteers. This is a great opportunity to spend time with your fellow 4-H friends, and add community service to your record book. So come and join the fun! The School Enrichment program is an opportunity to reach school age children that may not have had any other 4-H experience. This is not a fundraiser for the Extension Office. The schools pay a nominal fee per student to cover the cost of the supplies. The bread in a bag Wheat Science program is one of the most popular programs offered to the elementary teachers in Shawnee County. Please call Kim Seeley at 232-0062 x112 or email kjseeley@ksu.edu by December 15th so we will know how many helpers to count on. 3

2018 4-H Horse Panorama By Pam Van Horn The 2018 4-H Horse Panorama has been scheduled for January 26-28 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Registration and contest rules for Horse Panorama will be posted to the Kansas 4-H web site soon on the Horse Events page. Kansas 4-H Dog Judges Certification and Training News By Deryl Waldren The Kansas 4-H Dog Judges Certification and Training will be January 26-28, 2018, in Wichita, Kansas at the Sedgwick County Extension Center. Beginning the training on Friday evening has allowed participants in one weekend to learn about the four dog phases of showmanship, obedience, agility and rally obedience of the Dog Care and Training Project. Those attending to become judges or to re-certify as judges experience judging classes to practice the skills necessary to effectively judge local 4-H dog shows. This is also a good opportunity for local project leaders and older 4-H members to observe the training to learn new knowledge and to better understand how they will be judged at invitational and the Kansas State Fair 4-H Dog Show. Details for registration will be available in late November, so please share the dates with potential judges and project leaders in your Extension Unit. For more information, contact Deryl Waldren, dwaldren@ksu.edu; or call 785-462-6281. 5
