2016 Annual Meeting Thank you to all! All who came out to help! The annual meeting/banquet was held on January 7 th, 2017 at the Quality Inn and Suites. The evening started out with a meet and greet where members mingled and were able to connect with new and old friends. We were happy to see so many people come and enjoy the evening. We welcome to the board Steve Carfrae and Jeff Arment and would like to thank Tina Woosley and Rick Jones for their service to the board the last 2 years, we wish them well in their next adventure. Elections are held in November; please consider joining the board next year. Steve Bryant - Hall of Fame Inductee After a great meal we moved into the awards portion of the banquet and we would like to congratulate all of our members and thanks everyone for coming. Along with team awards were several specialty awards which were awarded to Cindy Wells for organizer of the year, Smokin Grumps for Rookie of the year, Oversized Load BBQ for most improved team of the year and finally, Steve Bryant was inducted into the Iowa BBQ society Hall of Fame. We hope to see a lot of you through-out the year and at next year s banquet. SPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR CHECK IN HELPERS - Wendy, Michelle, and Jodi Cindy Wells - Organizer of the Year BBQ'Loo and Blues Too J u d g i n g C l a s s Bruce and Tanya Grummon Rookie of the year Fred and Tracy Nevill Most improved team of the year

BACKYARD BBQ This year the Iowa BBQ society has developed a program in order to recognize all the great backyard BBQ cooks in our state and will be tracking a team of the year for those who attend an IBS sanctioned event. It will obviously be a slow start with communities just now planning their event, but we hope to see this grow for years to come. All backyard contests will be listed on our website under the events tab and make sure to double check that it is sanctioned as the IBS is involved in several events which DOES NOT automatically make them sanctioned. If you are unsure of a contest status, please contact the organizer or one of your board members for clarification. We will try to make it clear on the website, but as we all know, sometimes things fall through the cracks. Each contestant will be competing in chicken and ribs at these events and vie for our first backyard team of the year. Pretty exciting stuff! We have reps in place to score and oversee these events and have developed a scoring system just for the IBS. If anyone knows of a community needing help with a backyard event, please email Jay Ringgenberg @ jay.smokehouse72@gmail.com for more information or if you would like to be one of our IBS representatives. Please be on the lookout for upcoming events. www.iabbq.org

The Iowa BBQ Society and the Iowa Speedway has partnered up again this year to bring you the second Annual Running Wide Open BBQ Contest on June 24 th during the NASCAR XFINITY SERIES AMERICAN ETHANOL E15 250. Last year we hosted 22 teams to kick off the first contest at the speedway and things went relatively smooth. Perfect weather helps a lot. This year we are limited to the first 30 teams. We hope to hit this mark and make this contest really fun for all. The entry fee is only $125 and comes with 2 tickets to the race that night, your pork product, and a year s membership in the Iowa BBQ Society. ($100 for current members). If you think your team can bring home the checker flag, go to this link and get signed up today! http://www.iabbq.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/2017-1-speedway-entry-form.pdf

WELCOME NEW JUDGES! On Saturday, March 25, 2017, the IBS Annual Judge s and Table Captain Classes were held at the Johnston Lion Club. It was a pleasure to have Rich & Bunny Tuttle come to Johnston again to teach these classes to our 31 participants -- several of whom were from out of State. Chris Ritter of Smokin Critters volunteered to cook the four meats for the class. Many volunteers came to help setup and assist Rich & Bunny during the day. Not only did the participants receive excellent training for their new roles, but the volunteers were able to get a refresher course during the day. IBS provided coffee, milk, juice, and breakfast sandwiches from Sorriso Grille in Ankeny to the participants and volunteers. A special thanks to Rich & Bunny Tuttle, Dan Robinson, Chris Ritter, Rick Jones, Tina Woolsey, Sorriso Grille, and all of the volunteers who showed up to help during the day. During the course of the classes, Rich & Bunny told everyone about the new judging rules, including the ability for cooks to use kale as a garnish, and to remind everyone that once the decision has been made that the garnish is legal, the garnish needs to be disregarded as to all three categories. There were many good questions asked during both classes, and the participants seemed to really enjoy the class and their day of education. Several of the participants said they would highly recommend the class in future years. By Christine Dutton
