BACKYARD BBQ This year the Iowa BBQ society has developed a program in order to recognize all the great backyard BBQ cooks in our state and will be tracking a team of the year for those who attend an IBS sanctioned event. It will obviously be a slow start with communities just now planning their event, but we hope to see this grow for years to come. All backyard contests will be listed on our website under the events tab and make sure to double check that it is sanctioned as the IBS is involved in several events which DOES NOT automatically make them sanctioned. If you are unsure of a contest status, please contact the organizer or one of your board members for clarification. We will try to make it clear on the website, but as we all know, sometimes things fall through the cracks. Each contestant will be competing in chicken and ribs at these events and vie for our first backyard team of the year. Pretty exciting stuff! We have reps in place to score and oversee these events and have developed a scoring system just for the IBS. If anyone knows of a community needing help with a backyard event, please email Jay Ringgenberg @ jay.smokehouse72@gmail.com for more information or if you would like to be one of our IBS representatives. Please be on the lookout for upcoming events. www.iabbq.org

WELCOME NEW JUDGES! On Saturday, March 25, 2017, the IBS Annual Judge s and Table Captain Classes were held at the Johnston Lion Club. It was a pleasure to have Rich & Bunny Tuttle come to Johnston again to teach these classes to our 31 participants -- several of whom were from out of State. Chris Ritter of Smokin Critters volunteered to cook the four meats for the class. Many volunteers came to help setup and assist Rich & Bunny during the day. Not only did the participants receive excellent training for their new roles, but the volunteers were able to get a refresher course during the day. IBS provided coffee, milk, juice, and breakfast sandwiches from Sorriso Grille in Ankeny to the participants and volunteers. A special thanks to Rich & Bunny Tuttle, Dan Robinson, Chris Ritter, Rick Jones, Tina Woolsey, Sorriso Grille, and all of the volunteers who showed up to help during the day. During the course of the classes, Rich & Bunny told everyone about the new judging rules, including the ability for cooks to use kale as a garnish, and to remind everyone that once the decision has been made that the garnish is legal, the garnish needs to be disregarded as to all three categories. There were many good questions asked during both classes, and the participants seemed to really enjoy the class and their day of education. Several of the participants said they would highly recommend the class in future years. By Christine Dutton
