Brock Holt drove in the club s only run with a double in the 6th inning that scored Jemile Weeks, who reached twice (1B, HBP) in his first start as a Red Sox. SOX STATUS: The Red Sox have won 5 of their last 9 games but have dropped 12 of their last 17 beginning with an 8-game losing streak from 8/17-24...They are 12-15 in their last 26 games beginning on 8/6. The club is 17 games under.500 and a season-high 20.5 games back in the division...they are 5.5 games behind the 4th-place Rays (67-73). END OF THE ROAD: Boston concludes a 10-game, 11-day road trip tonight with the last of 3 games in the Bronx (1-1 thus far)...they opened the trip winning 2 of 3 in TOR, and then took 2 of 4 in TB over the long weekend. The Sox are 5-4 thus far on the trip...a win tonight would give them a 2nd straight winning trip (also 5-3, 8/5-13)...Before that last trip, the club had not won any of its previous 6 road trips this season that were longer than 3 games (0-5-1). ROAD RULES: Boston has won 8 of its last 12 road games (.667), including a season-long 5-game road win streak, 8/10-26...Since 6/28, the club is 16-13 (.552) on the road. Boston has 3 more wins this year in 70 road games (32) than 69 home games (29)...The club has a.457 win pct. on the road compared to.420 at home. HEADING HOME: The Red Sox begin a 6-game road trip tomorrow with the first of 3 games against the Blue Jays before hosting the Orioles for 3...Overall, the Sox have 12 home games left, with 3 each against all 4 division rivals. Boston s final remaining trip is an 11-day, 10-game stretch from 9/11-21 at KC (4G), PIT (3G), BAL (3G). FACING EAST: Of Boston s last 32 games, a stretch that began last Monday (8/25), 25 are against division rivals (5-4 thus far)...the club s only remaining non-division foes are KC (4G) and PIT (3G) to open the last road trip. RUNNING REVERSAL: Boston been successful in 13 of its last 14 stolen base attempts and has been caught stealing just twice in the team s last 23 attempts beginning 7/12. The Sox lead MLB with a 90.9% SB success rate since the All-Star break (20 of 22) after Boston posted an ML-worst 60% rate (30 of 50) before the break. KIDS PLAY: On Tuesday night, the pair of 21-year-old Red Sox rookies, Mookie Betts (3-for-5, HR) and Xander Bogaerts (4-for-5, 2B, HR), combined to go 7-for-10, 2B, 2 HR. Betts and Bogaerts were the 1st Red Sox 21 years old or younger to homer in the same game since Tony Conigliaro and Tony Horton did it on 9/8/65 at CLE. Bogaerts became the youngest Red Sox with a 4+ hit game since 21-year-old Glenn Hoffman, 5/3/80 at KC. STILL SLUGGING: David Ortiz ranks 5th in the AL with 30 homers, tied with CHC s Anthony Rizzo for the most among ML left-handed hitters...this is his 8th career 30-HR season, all since joining the Red Sox in 2003, which ties Ted Williams for the franchise record. Ortiz ranks 3rd in the AL with 35 RBI, including an MLB-high 81 RBI since the start of May...He is closing in on his 8th career 30-HR/100-RBI season, which would pass Ted Williams (7) for the franchise record. SOX AND YANKS: Tonight the Red Sox conclude a 3-game series against the Yankees, their last set of the season in the Bronx...Boston has won 4 of its last 7 against the Yanks but has gone 6-9 overall vs. NYY this season. BALLPARK FIGURES: Boston is 28-27 (.509) at the current Yankee Stadium...It is the best record by any visiting AL team since the ballpark opened in 2009. Since joining the Red Sox in 2013, Mike Napoli leads all visiting players with both 6 home runs and 18 RBI at Yankee Stadium. SEEING IS BELIEVING: The Red Sox lead the majors with 4.05 pitches seen per PA (MIN is 2nd at 4.01). Mike Napoli, who tops MLB with 4.48 P/PA this season, is aiming to lead the majors in that category for a 2nd straight year (4.58 in 2013)...He would be the 1st player to lead the majors in P/PA in consecutive years since Bobby Abreu in 2004 (4.32) & 2005 (4.39). DIFFERENCE MAKER: Yoenis Cespedes has driven in a team-high 24 of Boston s 120 runs scored (20%) since his Red Sox debut on 8/2, T-6th most RBI in the AL in that time. Of his 24 RBI for Boston, 10 have given the team a lead...that s the 2nd most go-ahead RBI in MLB since his 8/2 debut, trailing only TB s Evan Longoria (11). Cespedes has the game-winning RBI in 5 of the club s 12 wins since his debut...all 4 of his homers as a Red Sox have given the team a lead. In 30 games for the Red Sox, he has 5 tying or goahead hits in the 7th inning or later, already tied for the team season lead with David Ortiz...He is batting.400 (14-for-35) with RISP since joining the Red Sox. ON THE OFFENSE: The Red Sox have scored 47 runs over their last 10 games (5-5; 4.70 R/G) but rank last in the AL overall with both 536 runs scored and 3.86 runs per game. CLOSE CALLS: Boston has played an AL-high 50 one-run games this year (25-25), 4 shy of the MLB lead (3 teams) and 8 more than the Sox played in all of 2013 (42, 21-21)... Their 25 one-run wins rank 2nd in the AL to Baltimore (28). Boston is on pace for 58 one-run games, 1 shy of the club record of 59 one-run games set in 1961 (32-27). QUALIFYING XANDER: 21-year-old Xander Bogaerts enters today with 504 PA this year...he is the 1st Red Sox player to tally at least 500 PA in a season at age 21 or younger since Tony Conigliaro did it in 1965 (583) and 1966 (628). Since 1920, the only other Red Sox aside from Bogaerts and Conigliaro with 500+ PA in a season at age 21 or younger are Hall of Famers Bobby Doerr (1938-39) and Ted Williams (1939-40). Pawtucket and Portland lost their postseason openers last night, while Salem won...the GCL Red Sox won their 1st Gulf Coast League title since 2006. Sox prospects picked up the top pitching honors in the Triple-A International League (RHP Anthony Ranaudo) and Double-A Eastern League (LHP Henry Owens). Boston led all MLB teams with 3 players on s 2014 Minor League All-Star Team: C Blake Swihart, 2B Mookie Betts, and SP Henry Owens.
