How to GET STRTED Read this entire ssembly Guide before assembling your Oru Kayak. Watch the instruction video: www.orukayak.com/ assembly-guide-2014 heck out video Tips & Tricks: www.orukayak.com/ tips-and-tricks PLESE NOTE ll Oru Kayak components have been custom-engineered for a precise fit. If a component seems difficult to assemble, check the directions instead of forcing a fit that might not be correct. WE RE HERE TO HELP! ontact us at (415) 340-2678 or service@orukayak.com if you have questions. Oru Kayak: Explore outside the box. Inspired by origami, the Japanese art of paper folding, your Oru Kayak is designed to be simple and intuitive to assemble. With a few simple steps, the box you re looking at will unfold into a twelve-foot long kayak that s beautiful, robust, swift, and smooth. With a bit of practice, the Oru Kayak can be put together in about five minutes but the first time will take longer, as the folds are initially stiff. e patient and don t force anything; components are custom-engineered to fit together precisely. You ll be on the water in no time at all, and we can t wait to hear about your Oru Kayak journeys. Send your photos and videos to info@orukayak.com or add hashtag #orukayak to share them with the community. Enjoy your adventures! The Oru Kayak team

Step 1: Open the Oru Kayak box The box contains all the components needed for assembly and includes space to store gear such as a personal flotation device (PFD) and a 4-piece paddle. Loosen and slide the shoulder strap off the sides of the box. You won t use it while kayaking, but you will need it when you fold the Oru Kayak back into box form. The lid becomes the kayak s floorboard. The box becomes the kayak s hull and deck. Unclip the two sets of box buckles on both sides of the orange lid. Lift the lid off. Remove the loose kayak components packed into the box. See page 2 for a list of the loose components. Several additional components are permanently attached to the hull/deck. www.orukayak.com 1

Parts: loose components 1 2 Shoulder strap: Used to carry the kayak when in box form. Stow behind the backrest while kayaking. Seam channels (2): These seal the deck seam. 1 SHOULDER STRP 2 3 (back) bulkhead: Provides structural rigidity. 5 Seat pad: Tucks under the shock cord in the floorboard. 4 ackrest: ombines back support and structural rigidity. 6 Deck straps (2): Stash extra gear under these rubber straps on the kayak deck. 7 Spare parts: Extra screws, nuts and buckles for repairs or replacement. 2 3 4 5 6 7 2 SEM HNNELS STERN ULKHED KREST SET PD 2 deck straps SPRE PRTS ORU KYK SSEMLY GUIDE

Step 2: Unfold the box NOTE: Removable colored stickers will help guide you through your first assembly. Hold the two folds at the orange stickers. Pull as indicated in the illustration (at left) to open. Push the ends apart to extend the box into a long sheet. Pop the hull flat with your hands as you extend it. www.orukayak.com 3

Parts: hull/deck The box becomes the hull and deck of the kayak. Several key parts are permanently attached to the hull/deck. The bow (front) and stern (back) of the Oru Kayak are different, so pay attention to orientation throughout the assembly process. 1 2 Fairings: These seal the boat at the bow and stern, and include handles for carrying the kayak. Deck buckles: Eight deck buckles close the deck. 5 (back) 3 4 ow (front) bulkhead: Like the loose stern bulkhead, this provides structural rigidity. djustable footrest: Keeps your legs in a comfortable position and gives you greater control of the kayak. 2 3 4 2 5 5 oaming: The rim around the cockpit can hold a standard spray skirt (size medium) if desired. ow (front) 4 ORU KYK SSEMLY GUIDE 1 IMPORTNT: efore assembly, make sure the bow and stern points are folded inward as shown here.

Parts: floorboard The box lid becomes the floorboard. The floorboard is a crucial part of the Oru Kayak assembly: it locks into the cockpit at the coaming, and holds the seat pad and backrest. 1 Right cockpit handle 2 ackrest plate 1 2 Handles: Lock into coaming and provide support when entering or exiting the kayak. ackrest plate: Holds the backrest and column (see Step 9). OW 4 ox uckles 3 Seat pad shock cord: The seat pad tucks under the shock cord in the center of the floorboard (see Step 10). 1 Left cockpit handle 3 Seat pad shock cord 4 ox buckles: Two sets of buckles hold the box closed, but are not used when in kayak form. www.orukayak.com 5

Step 3: ttach seam channels Four seam channels seal the deck (top) of the kayak. Two are permanently attached to one side of the deck, and you ll attach the other two so that all four run endto-end for the entire length of the kayak. Fit one loose seam channel tightly end-to-end with the permanently-attached seam channel at the bow. There should be no gap between the two seam channels. (See close up) seam channel Repeat at the stern of the kayak. no space seam channel ow NEED HELP WITH THIS STEP? Step 4: Insert bulkheads ow and stern bulkheads provide the Oru Kayak with structural rigidity. They do not provide flotation. For extra buoyancy, place float bags (not included) between the bulkheads and the bow and stern. Insert the bow bulkhead (attached by a shock cord to the footrest) into the two black u-channels affixed to the hull at the bow. Insert the stern bulkhead into the two black u-channels affixed to the hull at the stern. ow www.orukayak.com 7

Step 5: Loosely close the kayak lose the kayak in stages. In this step, you ll snap it together loosely. Start with the buckles closest to the cockpit. You ll tighten the deck buckles in Steps 8 and 9. Loosen the deck buckle directly in front of and behind the cockpit. Then clip these two deck buckles closed. Do not close any other buckles yet. ow 8 ORU KYK SSEMLY GUIDE

Step 6: Insert the floorboard The floorboard adds structure to the cockpit area. The handles rotate and clip onto the coaming (cockpit rim) to hold the floorboard in place. Fold the floorboard into U-shape, and insert it into the cockpit. Fold the floorboard into the hull. Flex the middle of the floorboard upward. Now rotate the handles and lock them into the coaming. Flex the middle of the floorboard upward, forming a W-shape. Place the edge of one handle into the recessed groove in the coaming. OW lose up How to rotate the cockpit handle to lock into the coaming. While pushing the middle of the floorboard down, rotate the handle to lock it into place; the handle will snap in when fully rotated. Repeat with the other handle. See close up. www.orukayak.com 9

Step 7: lose the front of the cockpit The Oru Kayak cockpit is reinforced to support your weight while entering and exiting the kayak. Rotate the front cockpit rib to slide the keyhole over the shiny screw. deck seam channel deck D Line up the shiny screws with the slots in the front cockpit rib. Tighten the first deck strap, sliding the shiny screws all the way into the slots in the front cockpit rib. Make sure that the edges of both sides of the deck slide completely into the seam channel (applied in step 3). See close up. D front coaming latch E front cockpit rib D deck trim lose up Make sure the black trim on the deck slides entirely into the seam channels. Step 8: lose the front deck seam lip together and tighten each of the three remaining deck buckles on the front, starting at the cockpit and working towards the bow. NOTE: (Do not pull upward on the straps: this can cause the deck buckles to pop off. If this happens, you can snap them back together easily. To fully close the deck seam and slide the deck trim completely into the seam channels, push downward on the seam channel while pulling on each strap. OW NEED HELP WITH THIS STEP? GO TO www.orukayak.com/tips-and-tricks www.orukayak.com 11

Step 9: lose the back of the kayak losing the back of the kayak is similar to closing the front (steps 7-8). You ll install the backrest column, which supports the rear cockpit area. E E E Slide the backrest column into the slotted backrest plate in the floorboard. Tilt upward to lock the backrest column in place. F F Lock the top of the backrest column into the two shiny screws below the kayak deck (see close up). D Tighten the deck buckle behind the backrest to close the deck seam. lose cockpit latch. ack on land: Folding your Oru Kayak into its box Disassembling the Oru Kayak is basically a simple reversal of the assembly. However, there are a few tricks. Follow these directions to learn how to pack your Oru Kayak back into its box quickly and easily. 1 First, unclip the fairings at the bow and 2 stern. Remove both rubber deck straps, and unclip all eight deck buckles. 3 Remove the two loose seam 4 Remove the backrest. 5 channels (applied in Step 3). Unlatch the front and back of the cockpit, and remove the floorboard. You ve now removed all the loose components. www.orukayak.com 15

The big fold The big fold is an almost magical transformation, from boat back to box. DIGONL RESE Once you ve removed all the detachable parts, note that there are two asymmetrical diagonal creases in the unfolded Oru Kayak hull (see dotted lines, at right). Note the four blue and green stickers on the hull. You ll use these to guide the next step, in which you will fold the bow and stern of the Oru Kayak inward like an accordion. 6 Fold one end inward as shown, 7 compressing it like an accordion (you can start with the bow or stern). Repeat with the other end. 8 Fold the two accordioned ends towards the middle, to slide past each other. Push each end towards the opposite diagonal crease: push the blue stickers towards each other, and the green stickers towards each other. 9 Keep the attached footrest and bulkhead out of the way of the folding, as they can dent or scratch the hull. Folding the Oru Kayak back into the box The Oru Kayak box holds all the loose components, and can also fit a paddle, PFD (personal flotation device), and other accessories. STSH ORU KYK OMPONENTS HERE t first, the box may take some effort to close, but with use, folding it up will become easier. The shoulder strap makes it easy to carry the Oru Kayak short distances; for longer trips we recommend our Oru Kayak pack, available at www.orukayak.com. 10 Kneel on the folded box to compress it. lip and tighten the two sets of outside 11 deck buckles on either side. Stash loose components in the box, along with any extra gear. Place the floorboard over the top of the box.
