2015-16 Green Bay Men s Basketball Regular ATHLETICS COMMUNICATIONS Director of Strategic Communications: Joey Daniels Email: danielsj@uwgb.edu Office: 920.465.2498 Cell: 920.288.7723 LEADING OFF November 13, 2015 8:00 PM CT / 6:00 PM PT Maples Pavilion Stanford, Calif. Regular Opener Tonight s game marks the firstever meeting between Green Bay and Stanford, and the first time the Phoenix has played in California since Feb. 21, 2009, when it beat Long Beach State, 86-75. Green Bay will also begin its season on the road for the first time since the 2009-10 season under former coach Todd Kowalczyk, and have won each of its past five season openers. The Phoenix is 5-5 all-time against current members of the Pac- 12 conference, with the last meeting coming in a season-opening loss at Utah on 11/8/08 (L, 79-60). See page No. 3 for a comprehensive look at program history against the Pac-12. Green Bay is one of just five programs nationally (Arizona, Wichita State, Villanova, San Diego State) that have avoided consecutive losses in both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 regular seasons. GREEN BAY (0-0) at STANFORD (0-0) First-year head coach Linc Darner will be making his Division 1 coaching debut, a year removed from leading Florida Southern to a 36-1 record, a No. 1 overall ranking and the 2015 NCAA Division II National Championship in 2014-15, ending on a 25-game winning streak. In his nine seasons at the helm, Darner compiled a 218-72 record (.751) while guiding the Mocs to eight consecutive NCAA Tournaments from 2008-15 and six Sunshine State Conference regular season and tournament titles. He was also named the 2015 NABC Division II National Coach of Year. The Phoenix will return starters Carrington Love and Jordan Fouse from last year s 24-9 squad, both of whom played in all 33 games for the Phoenix last season. Love is the team s leading returning scorer (10.0 ppg in 2014-15), while Fouse has made a name for himself on the defensive end as a three-time Horizon League All-Defensive Team and Preseason All- League First Team selection. Last season, Green Bay (24-9) advanced to the Horizon League title game for the first time since 1998 before falling to top-seeded Valparaiso 54-44. It marked the first time since 1992 the program won 24 or more games in consecutive seasons. PROJECTED STARTERS (2014-15 Stats) No. Name Pos. Yr. Ht. Wt. Predicated on up-tempo style, his Mocs averaged 87.9 points per game during its 36-1 season in 2014-15, which ranked fifth in the NCAA. Florida Southern finished in the top-10 in several categories under Darner as well, including second in turnover margin (+7.2) and total steals (336), and third in both 3-pointers made (359) and attempted (968). Additionally, they were also first in free throws made (737) and attempted (965), and fourth in total assists (612). FULL FOUSE: Senior Jordan Fouse, a reigning three-time Horizon League All-Defensive selection, is coming off the best season of his career, averaging 7.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists, two steals and 1.1 blocks per game. He enters the 2015-16 season ranked second in Phoenix history in blocked shots (134) and third all-time in steals (187). Fouse is also sixth all-time in career rebounds (734) after passing four players inside the program top-10 last season, including Jeff Nordgaard (701), Randy Berry (695), James Bardney (680) and Bryan Boettcher (659). C-LOVE (IN) GREEN: Green Bay will also return senior guard Carrington Love from its 24-win season a year ago. As the team s top returning scorer, Love looks to build on a successful junior season. He earned his first career Horizon League Player of the Week award on Dec. 29 after scoring a careerhigh 28 points in the Phoenix s win over Georgia State on Dec. 27, ending 10-of-14 from the field and four-of-six from beyond the arc. The Milwaukee native started 32 of a possible 33 games, and like Fouse, also averaged career highs in points (10.0), assists (3.1) and minutes (31.2). He scored in double-figures in 18 games last season, including 20 points along with nine rebounds in one of the biggest wins in program history, at No. 15 Miami on Dec. 6, 2014. Without Keifer Sykes (18.6 ppg), Greg Mays (12.0 ppg), Alfonzo McKinnie (8.0 ppg) and Daeshon Francis (4.5 ppg), the Phoenix lost over 63 percent of its scoring from 2014-15. It also gives ample opportunity to a number of returning players, five of which averaged less than 10 minutes per game last season: Turner Botz (8.1), Khalil Small (6.7), Henry Uwadiae (5.2), Tevin Findlay (4.3) and Kerem Kanter (4.3). TWINNING: Part of a four-player incoming class, twins Anthony and Avery Brown come to Green Bay after decorated high-school careers at Lake Minneola High School in Minneola, Fla. Anthony was named the Class 6A Player of the Year by the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches last season after averaging team highs in points (20.9), rebounds (7.0) and assists (5.3). Avery was equally key to the Hawks No. 1 state ranking for the majority of the 2014-15 season, averaging 18.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists. Both earned All-State honors each of the last two years, which included a combined 52-9 record and a 2014 state runner-up finish. Cooper averaged 18.8 points per game as a sophomore at Kaskaskia College in Centralia, Ill. in 2014-15, finishing second in the NJCAA in points per game, steals (58) and offensive rebounds (77). Hurdle starred at Des Moines Area Community College last season, where the Milwaukee native led the Bears to a fourthplace finish in the NJCAA DII National Tournament, becoming the school s first 1,000-point scorer since 2003. IRONMEN Senior forward Jordan Fouse enters tonight s game having not just played, but started in all 98 of his games in a Green Bay uniform. Meanwhile, his teammate Carrington Love has also played in all 98 possible games at Green Bay, starting 50 career contests. Among the other 10 active players on the roster, only forward Kenneth Lowe (13) and guard Tevin Findlay (1) have ever started games at the Division I level. HISTORIC WIN OVER THE U On Dec. 6, 2014, Green Bay handed No. 15 Miami a 68-55 loss, which was the Hurricanes only loss of the season in Coral Gables, Fla. The win marked the first road win over a top-25 program in Phoenix program history. It was the second-straight season Green Bay has knocked off an ACC opponent (W, 75-72, vs. Virginia, 12/7/13). DEFENSIVELY-SPEAKING Green Bay accumulated 245 steals in 2014-15, second-most on Green Bay s all-time single-season steals list (249, 1993-94). In addition to quick hands, the Phoenix had 161 blocks last season, ranking third-best in program history for a single season. Individually, Fouse had more steals than any junior in program history a year ago (64), after he also broke the freshman (55) and sophomore (68) single-season records. SEVENTY OR LESS EQUALS SUCCESS In the past two seasons, the Phoenix is 40-7 when allowing less than 70. In 27 of those 47 outings, Green Bay allowed less than 60, going 26-1 record in those games. The lone loss in that scenario came in the 2015 Horizon League tournament title game, when the Phoenix fell 54-44 to Valparaiso. SCORING REPLENISHMENT After losing three players who combined for 45 20-point scoring games and eight 30-point scoring games last season, Green Bay will need to find its scoring from somewhere. Here are a few candidates: Carrington Love Returns as Green Bay s leading scorer from a season ago, in which he had the only other two 20-point scoring games, including a career-high 28 points in a 78-61 win over R.J. Hunter (19 points) and Georgia State. Charles Cooper Scored in double-figures in 24 of 27 games played as a sophomore last season, including 14 games of 20+ points and two 30-point games. He scored a season-high 33 on 9-of-15 shooting in a 93-86 road win over Lincoln Trail College on 2/14/14, while leading the Blue Devils to a 23-9 record in 2014-15. Jamar Hurdle Averaged a team-high 14.9 ppg on 56.4 percent shooting as a sophomore a season ago, while leading the Bears to a combined 57-14 record in two seasons. He scored in double-figures in 26 of 36 games played, including seven 20+ point games.

I think it s important to put the foundation in and build it from there. On the tradition at Green Bay: I know a lot about Green Bay and the tradition that coach Bennett established here. I m kind of a basketball junkie; growing up in Indiana you kind of have to be. I followed the Horizon League with Butler when they were in it. On not having a set starting-five: I told our guys, at Florida Southern my leading minute guy was our sixth man. I had a two-time All- American score 2,300 points in his career and for two and a half years, he came off the bench as our sixth man. On his system: We play faster, so there s going to be more possessions, more shots, they re going to get more opportunities to score. People are going to say, who is this? Why didn t he play more last year? On his team s preparation: I haven t pulled the reigns back on guys yet. I want to see what they can do, what kind of plays they can make. As coaches, we re trying to give them a chance to prove what they can do as a player. Not being around them much only having individual workouts for a long period of time, we didn t know what they could do. On facing tough non-conference opponents: As a player, you always want to see how you stack up against the Power Conferences. Our schedule to start the season did no favors for us. We start with three games in seven days all on the road, so this will be a tough challenge for us before we come home. On playing at 6 a.m. on Nov. 17: I told our guys if you can t be excited to be playing the early game on ESPN (Tip-Off Marathon) there s something wrong with you. If you use it s too early, I m too tired, I can t play, then just stay in bed and we ll play with the guys that want to go. You got to be fired up for those games. On season expectations: The biggest thing for us is to see improvement right now. I don t get caught up in saying we have to win this many games for this to be a successful season. With a new system, we re going to have some ups and downs during the year, it s how do we bounce from that. Our goal is we want to be playing our best in January and February heading into the conference tournament. On returning Green Bay to NCAA tournament: I think you ve got to set high goals for players and we ve talked about it with our guys. We ve said, Hey, our goal is play in the NCAA Tournament. I wouldn t have taken this job if I didn t think we could get there. The Phoenix led 31-24 at the break, but the host Redbirds used a 10-0 run late to pull away for the victory.. 2015-16 Green Bay Men s Basketball Regular Linc Darner, who led Florida Southern College to the 2015 NCAA Division II National Championship, was named the seventh head coach in the history of the Green Bay men s basketball program, Director of Athletics Mary Ellen Gillespie announced on April 14, 2015. Darner is a 13-year head coaching veteran with 292 career wins and a career winning percentage of over.700. From the very start of our process, Linc s experience as a head coach impressed all of us, Gillespie said. He has had tremendous success as a basketball coach and will be an outstanding coach and mentor for our student-athletes. He is a proven winner, and on top of the wins, he runs outstanding programs. After a thorough and comprehensive search process, there is no doubt he is a perfect fit for this institution and our men s basketball program. Darner built a championship program at Florida Southern in his nine seasons at the helm, compiling a record of 218-72. The Moccasins advanced to the NCAA Tournament in eight consecutive seasons (2008-15) and won six Sunshine State Conference regular season championships and six conference tournament titles. In 2014-15, Darner s program posted a 36-1 record and claimed the national championship with a 77-62 victory over Indiana (Pa.) in the title game. Florida Southern was ranked No. 1 in the country, and Darner was recognized as the 2015 NABC Division II National Coach of the Year. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity that I have been preparing for since I began my coaching career, Darner said. I am honored and grateful to lead the Green Bay Phoenix men s basketball program. Thank you to Director of Athletics Mary Ellen Gillespie and Chancellor Gary Miller for giving me the opportunity to build upon the Phoenix foundation and compete for championships. My family and I are excited to make Green Bay our home and we look forward to being a part of the community. In his time at Florida Southern, Darner was named the Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year six times. He coached five NABC All-Americans, eight NABC All- South Region selections, four Conference Player of the Year award-winners and 15 All-Sunshine State Conference players. From 2002-06, Darner was the head coach at St. Joseph s College in Rensselaer, Ind. Prior to his arrival, the program had only one winning season in eight years, but Darner led the Pumas to a 74-45 overall record. In 2005-06, Darner guided St. Joseph s to a 31-3 record and a No. 2 national ranking. Darner has also been an assistant coach at Ashland University (1998-2002), Lincoln Memorial University (1997-98) and Murray State University (1995-97). An Indiana native, Darner played from 1990-94 at Purdue University, where he was a team captain in 1993-94. During his senior season, Darner helped the Boilermakers to a Big Ten regular season championship and an appearance in the Elite Eight. He graduated from Purdue in 1995 with a bachelor s degree in management. Darner will be joined in Green Bay by his wife Kristen, their daughter Layne (14) and their son Tate (9).
