October President s Message Volume 132 October 2014 Hello fellow MSC members, September has passed and Fall is upon us, well, sort of. We ve been teased with a little bit of rain and snow but the heat is back. Let s pray that it s short-lived and we ll be blessed with plenty of precipitation soon WWW.MODESTOSKICLUB.COM This past month we celebrated the 40 th anniversary of our Lodge in Truckee. Wow, 40 years It was a lot of fun to share in the celebration with some of our founding/building members. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to stories of how the Lodge came together, plus a few stories of ski club life in the 70 s thrown in for humor s sake. The stories of our Lodge construction were truly inspirational. As Clifford said last year, it took a lot of hands and even more volunteer time to build our Lodge. This club was most definitely built on the spirit of volunteerism and it is that spirit which will assure our continued success. We have just a couple more activities coming up before (hopefully) the snow flies I am looking forward to both the Wine and Bike Ride this month and the Chili Cook Off next month. Please read Ron Allen s article in the newsletter for more information. For the Wine and Bike Ride, we have selected different wineries for this year s ride and a different route. It is sure to be a memorable event. So don t delay; sign up now Also, it is important to remind everyone that October marks the beginning of our membership meetings. October 14 th we will be meeting at John s Incredible Pizza. Please be sure to attend and bring your signed liability forms along with your checks for this year s membership. There will be a special presentation at the meeting which you will not want to miss Of course, if you can t make the meeting we will accept your signed forms and checks via the US Postal service as well. I hope to see you all soon, either at a meeting or activity Sincerely, Pam Shelton President

MODESTO SKI CLUB LODGE NEWS Happy Fall Season to all Does this mean it s going to start snowing? I sure hope so The Lodge is clean and ready for members and guests to visit, now we just need some of the white stuff. We had a great work weekend on September 19-21, 2014.except for the awful smoke from the King Fire I want to thank the following for all of their hard work cleaning and getting the lodge ready for the Winter Season: Roy Nightengale, Chuck & Linda Hennings, Gene & Laurie Nimocks, Tim Hutton, Jon Hooper, Jim Ambrosavage, Jack McDermott, Doug Ball, Bob Gibson, William Silveira, Joann Hennings & ME FYI, the locks have been changed. If you are a current Year Key Holder and are planning on using the lodge before October 31, 2014, you need to contact me to change out your key as it NO LONGER WILL WORK IN THE LOCK If you are a Summer Key holder your key is due back to me by November 10 New Season Keys will be sold after the New Year starts for the Club. Nov. 1, 2014, is the date that I will start taking reservations for the Winter Season and selling Season and Year Keys, provided you are approved as a returning member in good standing for the Ski Club. Housekeeping Issues Please be sure to NEVER leave food that can spoil when you leave in the garbage disposals Thanks Len Synkowicz for taking care of that issue on your last visit. So sorry that one of our members left food in the disposal and you had to suffer with the bad smell and take care of it Please be mindful of issues like that. Be sure to take food with you and DO NOT LEAVE ANY FOOD in the cupboards. I have found crackers that last 3 times I ve been up there. We have a mice problem again and we can t leave food out at all. Thanks in advance for your help with this. Be sure to TURN ALL LIGHTS OFF and UNPLUG Coffee pots and toaster before you leave too. Please advise me of any issues or any items that need attention. Best way to book a reservation is thru email to me. mnighte@aol.com. You may also call my home # which is 209-571-8125. Thanks, Michelle Nightengale Lodge Director

MSC Wine and Bike Ride Release of Liability form. This agreement releases the Modesto Ski Club (MSC) from all liability relating to injuries that may occur during the October 11, 2014 Wine and Bike Ride in Lodi, CA. By signing this agreement, I agree to hold MSC entirely free from any liability, including financial responsibility for injuries incurred, regardless of whether injuries are caused by negligence. I also acknowledge the risks involved in this Wine and Bike Ride. These include but are not limited to accidents, falls or citations. I swear that I am participating voluntarily, and that all risks have been made clear to me. Additionally, I do not have any conditions that will increase my likelihood of experiencing injuries while engaging in this activity. By signing below I forfeit all right to bring a suit against MSC for any reason. I will also make every effort to obey safety precautions as listed in writing and as explained to me verbally. I will ask for clarification when needed. I,, fully understand and agree to the above terms.

WHISTLER 2015 JAN 31 FEB 7, 2015 The FWSA 2015 Ski Week will be in Whistler Canada this coming year. All Modesto Ski Club members are invited to join this trip. Whistler Ski Resort is a huge resort encompassing both Blackcomb and Whistler mountains with skiing in the trees to skiing Blackcomb Glacier (awesome). I do not yet have a workable trip flyer nor estimated cost for this trip, however, I expect cost to be comparable to last year s Beaver Creek trip. Over 30 MSC club members are already signed up and committed to go, having placed a deposit check of $200 in my hands to enable an early signup date with BAC. (These are the survivors of the FWSA 2014 Beaver Creek trip). I expect this to enable reserving nice condos, conveniently located and grouped for our common enjoyment as a club group within the FWSA group. I expect this trip to be very popular, and FWSA lodging will be spread throughout the Village. Skiers committing to this trip need to be aware that these FWSA trips are not for the weak Skiing must be done each day, ski racing several days, and then the scheduled parties each night, will tax your endurance. There is the FWSA Welcome Party, Mountain Picnic, Awards Party, and Farewell Banquet to be attended. Also, the BAC Council Night Dinner Party and our own MSC dinner party, plus you will see several great places in the Village to have dinner or spend some spare time. I expect there will also be opportunities for additional activities such as heli-skiing, cross country skiing and perhaps the zip line will be operating. You do not have to ski well, however you do have to enjoy life, and enjoy having fun to join this trip. I am now accepting your formal BAC signup form (a $200 check per person, with email address) payable to BAC for deposit on April 14. This deposit is fully refundable until July and more details on the trip and cost are published. Please send your check to: Chuck Hennings, at 1779 Doak Blvd, Ripon Ca. 95366. My email address is: chuckhennings@sbcglobal.net.
