Despite yesterday s setback, the Cubs 6-1 record since the All-Star break is second-best in baseball, just behind the Pirates 7-1 mark. The Cubs emerged from the All-Star Break with a 6-0 record for only the third time in franchise history and for the first time in 82 years (6-0 in 1935) the only one other time the team accomplished this feat was a 7-0 start in 1933. This is the second of a five-game homestand against the Cardinals (0-1) and White Sox (two games, July 24-25) this is the second day of a stretch in which the Cubs play 18 of 29 games at Wrigley Field through August 20. WHERE THERE S A WILL: WIllson Contreras yesterday belted his 14th homer of the season, the most for any N.L. catcher and tied for second-most among all major league backstops with the Yankees Gary Sanchez Kansas City s Salvador Perez leads all catchers with 18 home runs this season. Contreras 26 career homers are the most by a Cubs catcher in his first two major league campaigns, surpassing the 22 hit by Cal Neeman in the 1957-58 seasons. Since making his debut on June 17 of last year, Contreras has produced an.835 OPS that s the third-highest of any N.L. catcher behind the Dodgers Yasmani Grandal (.855) and the Giants Buster Posey (.849). IT S A START: Cubs starting pitchers have posted a 2.14 ERA (10 ER/42.0 IP) while going 5-0 with a.180 opposing batting average in the first seven games since the All-Star break the 2.14 ERA and.180 average against lead all major league starting rotations in the early going of the season s second half.
