THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN ONTARIO OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT FONDS AFC 40 SERIES DESCRIPTIONS Series 2 William Sherwood Fox General and University Correspondence Dates of Creation 1919 1927 Extent and Material 1.2 m of textual records Biographical Sketch William Sherwood Fox was born in Throopsville, New York on June 17, 1878. In 1892, the Fox family moved to Toronto where Fox studied at McMaster University, then located in the city, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1900. After graduation, he taught classics at Brandon College in Manitoba, and then studied at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1911. Fox was a member of the classics department at Princeton University in New Jersey from 1911 to 1917, and joined the faculty at Western University of London in 1917 as professor of classics. Appointed Dean of Arts in 1919, Fox was one of three deans who, in the absence of an appointed President from 1919 to 1927, administered the University following the resignation of President Braithwaite. Dr. Fox was appointed third President of the University of Western Ontario in November, 1927, and installed in office on October 19, 1928. During his Presidency, the University developed affiliations with a number of Ontario colleges, changed the Department of Commercial Economics to the Department of Business Administration in 1929 and initiated graduate work in business studies in 1932; established the French Summer School at Trois-Pistoles, Quebec in 1933, the Western Conservatory of Music in 1934, the Faculty of Arts and Science in 1943, the Music Teachers College in 1945; and the Faculty of Nursing in 1946. The campus was enlarged with the construction of the J.W. Little Memorial Stadium in 1929, the Lawson Memorial Library in 1934, the Hume Cronyn Memorial Observatory in 1940, and the McIntosh Memorial Art Gallery in 1942. An inveterate botanist, Fox enhanced the campus environment with the addition numerous specimens collected during his professional and personal travels. Dr. Fox resigned the Presidency in 1947. In his retirement, he wrote several articles on the trees of Southwestern Ontario that appeared in The London Free Press between 1948 and 1950; and Sherwood Fox of Western, a reminiscence of his life and career, in 1964. Sherwood Fox died in London, Ontario on August 15, 1967. 11

Scope and Content Series consists of records of W. Sherwood Fox in his capacity as Dean of Arts, relating to college affiliation agreements; University buildings and building campaigns; University College opening ceremonies; convocation, including the 1924 Special Convocation; the Institute of Public Health, the Western Conservatory of Music, and Victoria Hospital; and alumni. Included are correspondence, including letters from notables such as Stephen Leacock, W. L. Mackenzie King, and Vincent Massey; internal memos; reports; lists; invitations; newspaper clippings on educational topics and University faculty, events, and buildings. While these are not records of the Office of the President per se, they have been included in this inventory as they were found interfiled with such records and relate to the same functions of University governance and administration during a period when no President was in office. Arrangement Records are arranged in yearly groupings until July, 1922. Thereafter, the series is divided into more or less yearly groupings of general and University correspondence. Arrangement is alphabetical by individual last name or corporate name within each grouping. Each file generally corresponds to a letter of the alphabet. Accruals No further accruals are expected. THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN ONTARIO OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT FONDS AFC 40 SERIES DESCRIPTIONS Series 4 William Sherwood Fox Subject Files Dates of Creation 1909 1947, predominant 1922 1947 Dates of Accumulation 1919 1947 Extent and Material 2.6 m of textual records Biographical Sketch William Sherwood Fox was born in Throopsville, New York on June 17, 1878. Sherwood Fox died in London, 21

Ontario on August 15, 1967. Scope and Content Series consists of correspondence and other documents of W.
