Shall - the instruction is compulsory. Should - the instruction is preferred but allows for initiative to be exercised. A JHA should be written for any variation in procedure or for the control of any new hazards that are identified. Correct manual handling technique: Utilise suitable Personnel appropriate for the task- consider age, special skills, capabilities and knowledge. Determine a lifting leader who will provide verbal instructions during the manual handling task. Definitions Ensure all Personnel involved are warm and stretched prior to undertaking any manual handling tasks. Ensure lifting point, path and set down points are free from obstacles and that the floor surfaces are not slippery. Remember to keep your spine in a neutral posture throughout the manual handling task. Consider the use of any manual handling aids, such as trolleys or hoists to minimize the weight lifted by Personnel. Avoid jerky movements, side bending or twisting during the manual handling process. Ensure the load is kept as close to the body as possible with the load sustained below your shoulders but above your mid-thigh. PPE PPE requirements for this task are: high visibility reflective long sleeved shirt and long pants, safety glasses, gloves, safety boots and hard hat, hearing protection.(consider disposable overalls), face shield Take 5 Complete a Take 5 prior to commencing a prestart inspection, cleaning operations or any other hazardous task. JHA Complete a JHA prior to commencing, if the scope of work has changed. Stored energy Isolate(remove key) Slips, trip and falls Maintain housekeeping at all times. Be aware of surroundings at all times. Prestart Visually check pressure cleaner for damage, cracks, and loose components also check the level of engine oil, pump oil, diesel as per operational manual. Check that hose and spray gun are connected correctly. Enough water to complete task Pinch Points Take care when handling pressure cleaner, hoses. Wear gloves. Environmental Spills Ensure oily rags are disposed of correctly. If a spill occurs, use the spill kit. Burns If engine is warm, conduct a visual check of the engine. Starting Pressure washer Open the fuel cock Open water supply valve (to pump) Set the speed governor lever to Run position. Pull trigger on gun to relieve pressure. Turn on the start switch toward clockwise Start position If the engine is started, take your hand away from key switch immediately. If the engine does not start after 10 seconds return key to off position wait 15 seconds and then start again. Do not overrun starter motor, damage to starter and battery may occur. Depress trigger on gun to start water flow Release trigger to stop water flow Adjust spray for task being performed by changing quick-fix nozzles(see CHANGING NOZZLES section of manual) Burns Kick back from water pressure Avoid contact with exhaust. Stand on a stable surface and grip gun with both hands expect the gun to kick when triggered High Pressure Cleaning The high pressure gun must never be pointed at other personnel or sprayed directly at Electrical cabinets or components. Safety glasses, face shield and gloves must be worn at times when operating the pressure cleaning gun. Never leave equipment running and unattended. Fumes Operate in well vented area Noise Hearing protection must be worn Stop of the engine Set the speed governor lever at low speed position before stopping the engine and then run the engine at no load for 3 minutes. Set the speed governor lever at stop position. Set the fuel cock at S stop position. Turn the key starter to the OFF position Turn off water valve (IBC) Stored energy Burns Be aware that pressure washer has now stored pressure in hoses and spray gun.
