Surgical Date: Rehab Start Date: Sftball Thrwing Prtcl INTERVAL THROWING PROGRAM SOFTBALL - FASTPITCH PITCHERS The interval thrwing prgram is designed s that the athlete can achieve each individual level f thrwing withut pain r cmplicatin. The ITP shuld be supplemented with a weight training prgram and a flexibility prgram t maintain the athlete in a tp physical cnditin. Weight training shuld be dne n a thrwing day and shuld emphasis high repetitin with lw weight as a maintenance prgram fr the athlete. The athlete shuld be thrwing every ther day and using the day between fr flexibility and rest. This prgram has been set up t minimize the risk fr reinjury and emphasize pre-thrwing warm-up, stretching, prper bdy and thrwing mechanics, and the imprtance f weight training with the thrwing athlete. Baseline requirements f thrwing include: 1. Clearance by the athlete s physician 2. Pain-free range f mtin 3. Adequate muscle pwer 4. Adequate muscle resistance t fatigue The athlete shuld warm-up by jgging, biking, r jumping rpe t increase bld flw and increase the muscular flexibility. Fllwing warm-up, stretching shuld be perfrmed. Emphasis shuld be placed n prper thrwing and bdy mechanics. The crw-hp methd shuld be used t avid stress t the thrwing arm. The velcity f the thrw is determined by the distance f the thrw and the ball shuld nly have enugh speed t travel the apprpriate distance. The athlete shuld begin with warm-up thrws. The gal is t be able t thrw the specified distance 75 times withut pain. During the recvery prcess the athlete may experience sreness and pssibly a dull, aching sensatin in the muscles and tendns. If the athlete experiences sharp pain, particularly in the jint, stp all thrwing activity until the pain ceases and call the athlete s physician if pain cntinues. This prgram is based n an individual thrwer, and because all thrwers will vary, there is n time fr cmpletin f the prgram. It is essential that the thrwer cmplete each individual phase with the prper thrwing and bdy mechanics and withut an increase in pain. Once the phase has been cmpleted, the athlete then prgresses t the next phase. This sets up a prgressin that an individual gal is achieved prir t advancement instead f advancing at a specified time. This will greatly decrease the chance fr re-injury and greatly increase the mst adequate and safest rute t return t cmpetitin. Begin each phase with warm-up thrwing fr 10 minutes and stretching Rest 10 minutes between each set t avid fatigue and lss f prper mechanics Infrmatin taken Dr. James Andrews and ASMI Website
