mean green storylines The Mean Green hosts two key conference match-ups this weekend. On Thursday night, North Texas has a rematch of last year s conference championship game against Marshall. On Sunday, North Texas faces Louisiana Tech, the only conference team that the Mean Green lost to during last year s regular season. Louisiana Tech also holds the conference s top record at 9-1-1. North Texas went 5-0 last year at home against C-USA opponents and extended its home winning streak against conference opponents to 32 games, which is the second longest in the nation. The Mean Green has not lost a home conference game since Oct. 31 of 2008. North Texas finished its regular season with a home record of 8-1 last year. The Mean Green s overall home record in program history is 162-26-12 (.840) and 84-13-6 (.844) in 10 years at the Mean Green Soccer Complex. North Texas went 5-3-1 this season in nonconference play. The only losses were to Oregon, Arkansas and Texas. The last time the Mean Green went 5-3-1 was during the 2012 season. The 2012 team went on to win 16 games and advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Mean Green won their opening conference game against Rice on Sunday. North Texas came back from a 1-0 deficit with two goals by Rachel Holden. North Texas outshot the Owls, 14-9. For the second time this season, North Texas was down early but came back to win. Rice scored an early goal in the 8th minute to take the lead but the Mean Green scored the next two goals to take the win. North Texas was down 2-0 to Abilene Christian on Aug. 28 but scored the next three goals to compete the comeback. Rachel Holden was named Conference USA Player of the Week for Sept. 19. The senior forward scored both goals in NT s 2-1 win against Rice, including the gamewinner. With her two goals, Holden increased her season total to seven, which leads the team. She moved into sole possession of seventh place in the North Texas records book with 35 career goals. She also moved into sole possession of 10th place in career points with 78, and into sole possession of fifth place with 14 career game-winning goals. Marchelle Davis has a long throw-in, and will take them when the Mean Green is in its opponents final third. Against Rice, the senior picked up her first assist off a throw-in when Rachel Holden headed in a ball that Davis had thrown in and had bounced across the front of the goal. The goal tied the game for the Mean Green. The Mean Green is known for its stingy defense. In 10 games this season, North Texas has only allowed its opponents to score more than one goal twice (a 3-2 win against Abilene Christian and a 3-0 loss to Oregon). In the last three years, opponents have scored more than once in a single game just eight times (4x in 2014, 2x in 2015 and 2x in 2016). North Texas has held its opponents to one goal or less in 48 out of a possible 56 games. And 34 of those games were shutouts by the Mean Green. The Mean Green improved to 4-0 at home with a 7-1 win against Texas Southern on Sept. 9. North Texas is known for being tough at home. NT is 84-13-6 (.843) in 10 years at the Mean Green Soccer Complex. Brooke Bradley earned her second Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week award on September 12 with her performances against Texas State and No. 25 Arkansas. The sophomore did not allow a goal in 45 minutes of play against TSU. She also recorded her first career assist on the third goal. Against No. 25 Arkansas, she made several goalsaving stops and finished with 10 saves, tying a career high. It is her second award this season. The Mean Green came up just short to No. 25 Arkansas on September 11, falling 1-0. North Texas has not defeated a ranked opponent since beating Denver during the 2003 season. Rachel Holden recorded her third career hat trick against Texas Southern on September 9. The senior began her career with a hat trick against the Tigers in 2013. She also scored one of the fastest goals in Mean Green history; netting a goal 26 seconds into the game. The Mean Green are known for their physical play and found their match in Oregon State. The two teams played to a scoreless draw on Sept. 2 in a match that featured 37 total fouls and six cards. Rachel Holden received a red card in the second overtime period after receiving a caution in the 93rd minute. She had to sit out the Oregon game with the one-game suspension. North Texas schedules tough opponents from the Power 5 conferences every year. With its tie and loss to Oregon State and Oregon, North Texas is now 0-1-1 against Pac-12 teams this season. Upcoming, the Mean Green will play Texas from the Big 12 conference. North Texas is 1-4 the last two years against Big 12 schools. The Mean Green is now 1-2 in the last two years against SEC opponents with a 1-0 loss to No. 25 Arkansas. North Texas is 3-9-1 in the last three years against teams from the Power 5 conferences. In the second NSCAA Central Region poll of the season on August 30th, the Mean Green was picked third ahead of Baylor, Oklahoma State, TCU and Rice. North Texas received votes in the NSCAA national poll for the opening two weeks of the season. North Texas continued its dominance at home with two wins in week two of the season. After a big second half against Texas A&M Corpus Christi, the Mean Green defeated the Islanders easily, 4-0. The Mean Green faced its first adversity of the season against Abilene Christian, going down 2-0 after the first 10 minutes of play. The Mean Green scored the next three goals to win. It was the first time since 2009 that North Texas had come back to win after being down by two goals. The Mean Green tied FIU, 2-2, on October 4, 2009. North Texas converted two penalty kicks in a single game in the 4-0 win against Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Anna Flobeck made her first career penalty kick and Rachel Holden converted her mean green quick shots The Mean Green is 2-0-1 in the series against Marshall. North Texas defeated Marshall, 1-0, in the conference championship game last year. NT tied the Thundering Herd, 0-0, in the regular season. North Texas is 3-1 in the series with Louisiana Tech. The Lady Techsters defeated the Mean Green, 1-0, last year in the Mean Green s last regular-season game. Marchelle Davis and Taylor Torres each had assists in the 2-1 win against Rice. They are now tied with Tori Phillips for the team lead in assists with three apiece. Dominique James has started the last four games in the defense. Cat Sebazco recorded her first career goal in the 7-1 win against Texas Southern. Kelci Slaughter, Chelsei Soto and Katie Gernsbacher recorded their first points of the season with assists against Texas Southern. North Texas was held scoreless for two straight games for the first time since the 2010 season when the Mean Green finished its season with a 1-0 loss to No. 22 Denver and a 3-0 loss to WKU. Three different players have converted penalty kicks for the Mean Green: Anna Flobeck, Marchelle Davis and Rachel Holden. The Mean Green have used between 6 and 10 subs every game. Hailey Sutton, Logan Layn, Brittnye Loewen and Dominique James have come off the bench in all of the games so far this season. North Texas is bringing back 4 starters from last year s record-breaking season. North Texas has added 11 newcomers to its roster: 8 freshmen and 3 transfers. Despite losing seven starters, much of the Mean Green s offensive power remains. More than half of the team s goals last year were scored by current players. Nineteen of the Mean Green s 39 goals were scored by forwards Rachel Holden, Taylor Torres and Marchelle Davis.

second career penalty kick. North Texas has made three penalty kicks already this season, tying them for second for most PK s in a season. The 2013 team holds the record with six. Lauryn Bruffett started the comeback for the Mean Green against Abilene Christian. She came off the bench to score from 25 yards out; a high shot that went over the goalkeeper s head. It is her first goal in a Mean Green uniform. Brooke Bradley was named Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week for her two shutout performances in week 1. In just her second and third career starts, Bradley did not give up a goal in 180 minutes. Marchelle Davis recorded a single-game best with two goals in the opening win against Incarnate Word. She also converted her first penalty kick. Dominique James proved to be a late spark for the Mean Green against Oral Roberts. She had been playing defense for the Mean Green since she arrived in August. Needing a spark, Coach Hedlund subbed in James at the forward position late in the game against Oral Roberts. Two minutes after subbing in, she had the assist on the game-winning goal. Rachel Holden started 2016 as she left 2015; by scoring goals. She scored the first goal of the 2016 season for the Mean Green and it proved to be the gamewinner. John Hedlund now has a career record of 305-118- 27. He became the 20th NCAA Division I women s soccer coach to reach the 300-victory benchmark on August 19. Rain and a different venue did not stop John Hedlund and the Mean Green soccer program from its 300th win. Due to unplayable field conditions at the Mean Green Soccer Complex, the Incarnate Word game was moved to Denton High School. North Texas won, 4-0, to give Hedlund and his team the 300th victory. John Hedlund is one of only eight Division I coaches to have accumulated all 300 wins at one school from win No.1 to 300. Hedlund and Anson Dorrance at North Carolina are the only Division I coaches to have started a women s soccer program from inception and secure 300 wins at that same and current school. Rachel Holden was named to the preseason All- Conference USA team for the third straight year. Holden is entering her senior year after scoring 12 goals as a junior and being named C-USA Co- Offensive Player of the Year. She was also named offensive player of the year as a freshman. North Texas was picked to finish first in Conference USA, according to a coaches poll, after capturing the regular-season title and the conference championship trophy last year. The Mean Green is in its fourth year as a member of Conference USA, and this is the first time that the Mean Green was picked to finish first. North Texas is coming off a record-breaking season where the Mean Green won 19 games, captured the regular-season and conference tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. North Texas lost seven starters from that team but returns a strong nucleus of players, including first-team allconference honoree Rachel Holden and all-freshmen team honoree Taylor Torres. After a standout junior season, Rachel Holden was ranked in TopDrawerSoccer s Preseason Top 100 Players. Holden led the team in goals and points last year and was named first-team all-conference and first-team all-region. Brooke Bradley will be a new face in goal for the Mean Green after Jackie Kerestine capped her record-setting career last year. The sophomore earned her first start in dramatic fashion: she played in the NCAA game against Texas Tech last year after Kerestine went down with an injury. Three Mean Green players played over the summer for one of the top amateur women s soccer leagues in the country. Brooke Bradley, Alexsis Cable and Taylor Torres all played for the Women s Premier Soccer League. Bradley and Cable played for the Texas Spurs FC, while Torres stayed local with the FC Dallas Women. The FC Dallas Women won the southwest region, while the Texas Spurs finished in second. Three of the Mean Green s 10 newcomers are transfers from Division I schools. Hailey Sutton is going to spend her fourth year at North Texas after playing for three years at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Katie Gernsbacher played two years at Texas before moving north, and Lauryn Bruffett spent one year at Mississippi State. Madeline Guderian is one of the seven freshmen on the Mean Green roster. She is the younger sister of Alison Guderian, who was a four-year letterwinner for the Mean Green from from 2010-13. Taylor Torres and her sister, Bobbie Gutierrez, both play collegiate soccer in Denton. Taylor plays for North Texas, while Bobbie is a senior defender for the TWU Pioneers. North Texas advanced to its fourth straight conference finals last year in the combined two leagues (Sun Belt and Conference USA). All together, North Texas has advanced to 11 conference championships. Since the program s birth in 1995, the Mean Green has never had a losing season. North Texas 20-year combined record stands at 304-117-27 - a.708 winning percentage. The ultimate goal of the program, North Texas has advanced to the NCAA Tournament four times - 2004, 2005, 2012 and 2015. Only five Division I schools in the state of Texas (of 20) have more NCAA Tournament appearances. In C-USA, only Charlotte has more tourney bids.

head coach john hedlund 305-118-27 (70.7 percent) 22nd season - In all, Hedlund has led North Texas to 11 conference 11championships, including seven regular season titles, and four trips to the NCAA Tournament (2004, 2005, 2012, 2015). - Hedlund enters the 2016 season ranked 14th among 14 active Division I coaches nationwide with a.709 win percentage, and his 299 wins rank him tied for 18th. - With the season-opening win against Incarnate Word, 20 John Hedlund became just the 20th coach in NCAA Division I history to reach the 300-win plataeu. - Hedlund has produced 73 all-conference players since 731999, including last year s first-team honorees Rachel Holden, Karla Pineda and Jackie Kerestine.
