He was taught piping at the age of four years by Pipe Major David Kay of Cumnock, who is an excellent teacher and piper himself. On the 10th January 1984, Gordon enlisted into the Royal highland Fusiliers and reported to the Scottish Infantry Depot, Bridge of Don (Aberdeen) for training as a Junior Piper. He was a very successful competitor in Junior and
Amateur solo piping competitions around Scotland, but it was whilst training at Aberdeen that he won his first major piping competition and the same year he also won the Silver Medal for at the Argyllshire Gathering at Oban (the youngest ever at the age of 16). After completing his training, Gordon was posted to the 1st Battalion in West Berlin in 1986. During steady progress through the piping ranks, Pipe Sgt Walker was invited to attend the Pipe Majors course at Edinburgh Castle under Major J.M. Allan and Pipe Major G.N.M. Stoddart BEM. At the end of the nine month course, Gordon passed both the theoretical and practical side of piping with distinguished honours. Since then he has continued to blossom as a prolific major prize winner in professional piping. He was awarded the Piper Of The Year in 1991, 1992 and 1993 for achievements and accomplishments at the end of the competing season. In addition to representing his regiment, Sgt Walker has served in the 1st Armoured Division Gulf campaign in 1991 and more recently in Bosnia as part of the UN Forces. Having completed his posting at the Scottish Division School Of Music as a Piping Instructor, Gordon has now returned to his regiment in Fallingbostel, Germany, where he and his wife Sharyn are likely to be posted for the next three years. The real trepidation lies now with the one who'll follow with volume 14.Piper & Drummer - November,96....takes it in his stride with a series of impeccable performances which certainly bear out his impressive swaithe of honours - an amazing collection for someone not yet 30.Alasdair MacLean - Scots Magazine 4/97 His tight sets feature precision and style more than cutting edge innovation...this is not an album for the casual listener, but the aficionados will marvel over it.rob Weir - Sing Out - Feb.97
