Joan awyer, Keith Rose In this issue:- Day chool Report Liz Palmer ubs and Membership New Year Ceilidh November upper Dance Local Events A Day of cottish Dancing The previous Newsletter contained a fascinating account of Helen and Keith's week of experiences at the RCD ummer chool in t. Andrews. A great event to attend if one can. However did you know that much nearer to home there are one day cottish Dancing Day chools? On a aturday at the very beginning of eptember four Bedford cottish Dancers travelled for about an hour to Wing, a village near Leighton Buzzard for a Dancing event organised by the Thistle Club but open to all dancers. This was a Day chool with two sessions of dancing tuition from a visiting cottish Dancing Teacher. On arrival we were welcomed with tea, coffee and biscuits and the chance to chat to the other arrivals, who had come from various places and had varying degrees of CD experience. Everyone was very friendly and soon it was time for the first session with our tutor for this year, Jim Healy, who also happens to be the President of the Royal cottish Country Dance ociety. In anticipation we were a bit in awe of him and wondered how strict he would be about whether our feet were turned out and our skip change steps perfect. In the event he was not terrifying at all and we had a good morning doing a variety of dances with reminders as we went along about how we could improve our technique. There was a tea break in the middle. It was a joy to have live music from the brilliant accordionist, Ian Robertson. At the same time, in another room of the Village Hall people who play musical instruments for cottish Dancing were having their own workshop with a very experienced bandleader, Jim Lindsay; we heard snatches of their music in the quiet moments of our sessions. At lunch time both groups mixed as we assembled to eat our picnic lunches in the hall.
Both groups then had an afternoon session, more dancing for us with the focus on dancing certain movements correctly within the dances. It was very interesting and stimulating but we were all ready for a break and a rest at the end of the afternoon and another cup of tea. There are various Day chools throughout the year and if you have never attended one, this annual event at Wing is a good one to start with. There is a different teacher each year. All Day chool teachers have different approaches and priorities but I always learn something new or am reminded of a technique I have forgotten while having a good day of dancing with a mixture of friendly fellow dancers. At Wing all abilities of dancing are in one large class and everyone is as helpful as possible to the others. Maybe you would think of joining us next year? Most attendees then stayed on for the ocial Dance in the evening. They walked to the nearby pub where, Jan, the organiser of the event had booked an evening meal for those who wanted it. Refreshed and reinvigorated they danced the evening programme to the uplifting music of a live band made up of the musicians who had attended their workshop during the day. Previously John and I have done this too. However this year, very reluctantly, I opted out of this and returned home in the cause of preserving my knees for what I hope will be many more years of cottish Dancing. Those who stayed declared it a good evening. Liz Palmer. ubs and Membership Could I remind people that subs for the current year were due to be paid at the time of the AGM in June. If this has slipped your mind so far could you please contact Keith at the next opportunity. There are some advantages to being a paid up member. You get a discount worth the same amount as your subs off Ball tickets. Also if you attend day-schools or workshops you could be entitled to a subsidy of up to 0 towards course fees. There is a long list of forthcoming day schools in the latest edition of cottish Country Dancer. There has been some confusion as to which classes are run by which organisation. To clarify the situation, our group, the Bedford cottish Dance Group, run the Tuesday beginners class at the A ocial Club, the unday evening advanced classes at Ravensden Village Hall, the unday ocial and upper Dances at Oakley Village Hall, the New Year Ceilidh and the May Ball both held in Bromham Village Hall. The Monday class, taught by George, also at the A ocial Club, is run by The cots ociety of t. Andrew and membership subs need to be paid to both groups. New Year Ceilidh Next year's New Year Ceilidh will be on January th 0, a week later than usual. This alteration has been necessary to avoid clashing with another local event, but we hope this won't prevent as many people as usual coming and enjoying a great evening. The price of tickets remains at and they are available now. Class Dates The Tuesday Class at A, Manton Lane will break for Christmas, the final class of the term will be on Tuesday 5 th December when everyone is invited to a Party Night. The first class of the new term will be on Tuesday 5 th January 0.
