Only four opponents (Washington State, Portland State, UCF, and Fordham) have shot higher than that mark as UC Davis enters the week leading the Big West in scoring defense (61.8 ppg), field goal percentage defense (.357), and three-point percentage defense (.300). The.558 (29-for-52) against Hawai i on Jan. 6 is the second-best shooting performance of the season, trailing only the.569 at Saint Mary s on Dec. 9. MOVIN ON UP: Thanks to her 45 points in two wins last week, junior biomedical engineering major Morgan Bertsch jumped three spots into sole possession of No. 7 on the school s all-time scoring list with 1,273 career points to her name. The Santa Rosa, Calif., native needs just 35 more to match former teammate Alyson Doherty (1,308) for sixth, and 110 to pass Paige Mintun (1,382) for a spot in the top five. ALSO KEEP AN EYE ON: Senior political science major Pele Gianotti is also closing in on the 1,000 career point milestone, entering this week s game against UC Riverside needing just 21 more to become the 19th player in the history of the program to reach the mark. Should she do so, Gianotti and Bertsch would become the first teammates to reach 1,000 career points in the same season since Sarah Allen and Colleen Turnbull did so in 2002-03, and only the third combination after Kari Sivesind and Kendall Greene did so in 1995-96. BOARDING TOWARD A BENCHMARK: Speaking of Gianotti, the Myrtle Creek, Ore., native became just the fifth player in the program s Division I history to reach 500 career rebounds with her nine boards at UC Irvine on Jan. 4. Should she add the 1,000 career point milestone this year, Gianotti would become only the fourth player in the program s Division I history to hit 1,000 career points and grab 500 career rebounds, joining Alyson Doherty (2012-16), Paige Mintun (2007-11), and Sydnee Fipps (2011-15). QUEENS OF THE QUARTER: Gianotti s 10 points in the fourth quarter at UC Irvine and Bertsch s 10 points in the third against Hawai i marked the 11th and 12th times this season that an Aggie has finished with double-digit points in a single quarter this season -- nine of those from Bertsch alone. Senior psychology major Rachel Nagel, who scored 11 points in the third quarter against Portland State on Nov. 17, is the only other UC Davis player to accomplish the feat, which has happened in the second half seven times this season. Since the NCAA returned to four quarters in 2015-16, Gianotti holds the program record for points in a quarter with 13 in the fourth against Cal Poly on Feb. 22, 2017. SPEAKING OF QUARTERS: The 29-point fourth quarter en route to a nine-point win at UC Irvine on Jan. 4 was the highest scoring quarter of the year for the Aggies, surpassing the 28 points scored in the second quarter against Washington State in the season opener on Nov. 10. The 25-point first quarter against Hawai i matched a season high in that period set at Pacific (Nov. 20) and against Yale (Dec. 28), while the four points scored in the third quarter against the Anteaters MEET YOUR 2017-18 UC DAVIS AGGIES! GAME 16 >> vs. UC Riverside >> Riverside, Calif. >> Jan. 11, 2018 were the fewest in any quarter since the NCAA returned to the format in 2015-16. DECK THE HALL S: The holiday season has been good for UC Davis freshman Cierra Hall, who has been on a tear offensively since the Aggies post-christmas trip to New York. Over her last four games, the cell biology major from Cypress, Calif., is averaging 10.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, collecting double figures in three of her last four, while shooting 60 percent (15-for-25) from the field. MORE MARLY: Reaching double figures for the first time this season, senior design major Marly Anderson narrowly missed her first double-double of the year in Saturday s win over Hawai i, finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds, while hitting all six of her shots (including her second three-pointer of the year) from the field. The point total was one more than she had in her previous four games combined and represented her highest scoring total since she finished with 14 at UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 4 of last year. DOUBLE-DIGIT DAMAGE: After tying the school s Division I single-season record with 29 games with 10-or-more points last season, Bertsch is back at it again with 15 such performances in the Aggies first 15 games -- giving her 65 for her career and solidifying her hold on fourth place on the school s Division I career list, just six back of Paige Mintun. Teammates Pele Gianotti (49) and Rachel Nagel (36) also rank sixth and seventh, respectively, on that same career list, all chasing record-holder Sydnee Fipps, who collected 80 career double-digit scoring games from 2011-15. MISS CONSISTENTCY: Bertsch s 15 consecutive double-digit scoring performances to start this season rank as the fourth-longest such streak in the program s Division I history -- and the ninth of 10 games or longer in that stretch. The biomedical engineering major from Santa Rosa, Calif., holds the program s Division I record with 23 consecutive double-digit scoring games over parts of two seasons from Feb. 18, 2016, to Jan. 5, 2017. TIS THE SEASON OF GIVING: UC Davis has been the queens of making the extra pass this season, entering the week ranked No. 16 in the nation in assists per game (18.3 apg) and No. 30 in overall assists (274), while ranking No. 33 in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.22). Meanwhile, Kourtney Eaton enters the week ranked No. 56 in the nation in assists per game (5.1), No. 54 in total assists (76), and No. 58 in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.24). MAKING GOOD ON THOSE PASSES: A good number of those assists this season have been thanks to the reliable hands of Bertsch, who enters the week ranked tied for No. 5 in the NCAA in made baskets with 136, trailing Iowa s Megan Gustafson and Ohio State s Kelsey Mitchell, who pace the nation with 150 makes from the floor. The junior from Santa Rosa, Calif., also ranks among the top 50 in the nation in points (No. 36) and points per game (No. 26), while standing No. 42 in field goal percentage. I M COMING FOR YOU, COACH!: With her six assists last week at UC Irvine, junior psychology major Kourtney Eaton moved past Karyn Castro (1995-99) into sixth on the school s all-time list with 331, placing her just eight back of Laura Manning (1985-89) for fifth entering this week s contest. GAME 16 >> vs. UC Riverside >> Riverside, Calif. >> Jan. 11, 2018 behind her head coach, Jennifer Gross, who holds the school career mark with 448 assists from 1993-97. THREEE-CO-LA!: The Aggies enter the week with four of the league s top six three-point shooters and still stand among the best in the nation from long distance, ranking No. 34 in the NCAA in three-pointers per game (8.5), No. 7 in three-point percentage (.401), and No. 35 in total three s made (128). Sophomore Nina Bessolo (.455) leads the Big West from beyond the arc, with seniors Rachel Nagel (.417), Dani Nafekh (.414), and Pele Gianotti (.411), holding down the 3-5 spots. CENTURY MARK: Already the fifth Aggie to reach the century mark in career blocks at Seattle on Nov. 26, Bertsch s performance in New York, gave her 116 for her career, solidifying her hold on fourth place on the school s all-time list. Bertsch, who set the school single-season record with 57 swats last season, needs just three more to match Kendall Greene (1992-96) for third and is well-within striking distance of career record holder Paige Mintun (2006-11) and her 150 blocks. SWAT TEAM: Just one year after setting the school s single-season record with 129 blocks, the Aggies have picked up right where they left off, ranking second in the Big West at 4.4 bpg, while collecting at least four blocks for the 11th time in 15 games against Hawai i on Jan. 6. UC Davis is nearly halfway to last year s total with 66 swats thus far this season, paced by Bertsch s 23 and 16 more from senior design major Marly Anderson. RECYCLED NOTES BY THE NUMBERS: Losing only one player off of last season s roster means Head Coach Jennifer Gross has an embarassment of riches statistically to work with in 2017-18. The Aggies bring back all but 17 of their 2,274 points, all but 20 of their 1,242 rebounds, all but seven of their 533 assists, all but five of their 846 field goals made, every one of their 252 three-pointers, and all but seven of their free throws, from the 2016-17 season. What does it all mean? We don t know, but numbers are fun. MILESTONE ACHIEVED: UC Davis junior forward Morgan Bertsch became the 18th player in the history of the program to reach 1,000 career points with her basket inside at the 1:49 mark of the third quarter on Nov. 12 against Pepperdine. Bertsch, who finished with a career-high tying 27 points -- 21 of those in the second half -- in the win over the Waves, became only the fourth junior in program history to accomplish the feat, joining all-time leading scorer Carol Rische, Sydnee Fipps (who ranks No. 2 on the all-time list), and Ellen Porshneva (who is No. 8 all-time in career points). HOW BIG WAS THE HOOP?: En route to her 27 points against Pepperdine, Bertsch broke the UC Davis Division I single-game record for field goals made in the process, making 13-of-18 from the field to eclipse Jessica Campbell s mark of 12 against Saint Mary s on Dec. 17, 2007. BERTSCH NETS BIG WEST WEEKLY HONORS: Thanks to her efforts on opening weekend, Bertsch picked up Big West Player of the Week honors for only the second time in her career on Nov. 13 -- the first since her 27-point night at San Francisco led to the honor on Dec. 26. The league award is the 15th earned by an Aggie since UC Davis joined the Big West in 2007-08, and the first since Pele Gianotti was honored on Feb. 27, 2017. Read the complete release: http://www.ucdavisaggies.com/sports/wbaskbl/spec-rel/111317aaa.html. NAGEL NABS BIG WEST WEEKLY HONORS: She scores. She rebounds. She plays lock-down defense. Now, she s the reigning Big West Conference Player of the Week. Senior Rachel Nagel averaged 15.7 ppg and shot just under 59 percent from the field for the Aggies last week, helping UC Davis to a perfect 3-0 record on the road with wins at Pacific, Southern Utah, and Seattle. It is the first career weekly honor for the psychology major and the 16th overall for an Aggie since joining the league, becoming the 11th different UC Davis player to win the award. Read the complete release here: http://www.ucdavisaggies.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/112717aaa.html. SO HOW BOUT THEM AGGIES?: UC Davis returns all five starters and all but one player off of last season s squad that finished 25-8 overall and 14-2 in the Big West Conference to clinch the regular season title. Although they were eliminated in the semifinals of the league tournament, the Aggies earned the program s first-ever postseason victory with a win at Utah in the opening round of the Women s National Invitation Tournament, and advanced all the way to the event s round of 16 before falling on the road at Washington State. Junior post, and biomedical engineering major, Morgan Bertsch leads the way offensively after averaging 15.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game en route to All-Big West first team honors, while fellow first-teamer, Pele Gianotti, and second-team selection, Dan Nafekh, were also in double figures at 11.2 and 11.0 ppg, respectively. AGGIES SIGN TALENTED GUARD DUO: UC Davis head women s basketball coach Jennifer Gross reloaded her backcourt with a pair of signings on Nov. 8, inking local standout Makaila Sanders and Washington native Cierra Jo McKeown to National Letters of Intent. Sanders, a 5-9 guard from Sacramento s Foothill HS, and McKeown, a 5-9 guard out of Walla Walla Community College and Touchet, Wash., will join the Aggies for the 2018-19 campaign. McKeown is the first junior college transfer in the program s Division I history and the first since Tatiana Armstrong (College of San Mateo) in 2006-07. To read the complete release, including brief bios on the two signees, please visit: http://www.ucdavisaggies.com/sports/w-baskbl/ spec-rel/110817aab.html. AGGIES WEARING BIG WEST TARGET: UC Davis was picked to repeat as Big West champions by both the coaches and media, according to a vote released on Oct. 25. The Aggies received six of the nine first-place votes from the coaches and 16 of the 19 first-place nods cast by the media en route to the top spots. UC Davis finished with 77 points in the coaches poll to shade second-place CSUN (69) and UC Santa Barbara (63), while collecting 166 points in the media poll, to out-place the Matadors (148) and Gauchos (112). DAVIS DUO ARE PRESEASON PICKS: The Aggies placed a pair of returning starters on the coaches six-member preseason all-conference team in junior post Morgan Bertsch and senior forward Pele Gianotti -- both All-Big West first team picks a season ago -- while Bertsch was also selected to the preseason all-league squad by the media. Bertsch earned preseason conference s honors for the second straight season, while Gianotti became the sixth UC Davis player to earn preseason laurels, joining Bertsch, Haylee Donaghe, Paige Mintun, Sydnee Fipps, and Alyson Doherty. TOURNEY TESTED SCHEDULE: A non-conference schedule that features six postseason teams from a year ago, and eight that finished among the top 150 in the final RPI rankings, sets the scene for the the Aggies in 2017-18. UC Davis will take on a pair of NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago in Oregon State and Big West rival Long Beach State, while Washington State (semifinals), Seattle (1st round), Saint Mary s (1sst round), UCF (2nd round), and Fordham (2nd round), all made the postseason WNIT field. STATE OF THE AGGIES: Half of the 16-member 2017-18 UC Davis women s basketball roster is made up of players from outside the state of California -- the highest number of out-of-state student-athletes in the program s Division I history. The eight out-of-staters have a decided Pacific Northwest tilt as the Aggie coaching staff has successfully mined the state of Oregon for three players (Pele Gianotti, Marly Anderson, and Emma Gibb), two more from Washington (Kourtney and Karley Eaton), and another from British Columbia (Sage Stobbart) -- giving UC Davis a pair of Canadians along with senior Dani Nafekh (Ontario). Transfer guard Katie Toole, who must sit out due to NCAA transfer rules, hails from Farmington, Utah -- the first Beehive State native in the program s Division I history. SEEING DOUBLE: Karley (older by one minute) and Kourtney Eaton are believed to be only the second set of sisters to take the floor together in the history of the program, joining Dru and Rachelle Hanft, who played together during the 1999 campaign. Taking it one step further, both the Eaton s and Hanft s are identical twins. 2017 BIG WEST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS 2017 WNIT PARTICIPANTS

As an assistant and associate head coach, she turned UC Davis into an immediate force in the Big West Conference by implementing one of the most difficult offensive schemes in the game. In her six seasons as head coach, Jennifer Gross has continued the tradition of excellence instilled in her throughout her entire Aggie career. Selected as the 2017 Big West Conference Coach of the Year after guiding her alma mater to 25 wins, a Big West regular season title, and a trip to the Sweet 16 of the Women s National Invitation Tournament, Gross was named head coach of the women s basketball program in October of 2010 and guided UC Davis to immediate success. Under her tutelage, UC Davis has been a perennial contender in the Big West, advancing to the conference tournament in six straight seasons, working up from first-round berths in her first two years to an appearance in the tournament championship game in 2016 -- the program s first showing in the league s title game since the Aggies won the tournament and advanced to the NCAA s in 2011. As the program s offensive coordinator, she implemented a Princeton-style offense, building it from the ground up. Using the fundamentals of sharp cuts, smart passes, and an unprecedented level of teamwork, the Aggies have been able to give opponents fits with their precision and execution. That has paid off as UC Davis has led the league in field goal percentage in three of the last four seasons (finishing second in 2016) and paced the Aggies to the top of the three-point shooting charts twice in the last three seasons in 2015 and 2017. During her tenure as head coach, Gross has coached 11 players to a total of 19 All-Big West honors -- including three-time first-team all-conference performer Sydnee Fipps, who became only the second Aggie student-athlete to accomplish the feat (Paige Mintun, 2009-11) and only one of 11 players in the history of the Big West Conference to earn first-team honors at least three times in a career. Fipps eventually ended her career as the program s all-time scoring leader at the Division I level and second on the school s all-time list with 1,636 career points. All told, since returning to her alma mater in 2004-05, Gross has helped establish the foundation of UC Davis successful transition to the Division I level, helping lead the Aggies to 216 victories, the program s first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament (2011), four berths in the WNIT (2008, 2010, 2012, and 2017), and a.545 (216-180) winning percentage, in 13 seasons. During that span, 19 student-athletes have gone on to earn a combined 33 all-conference honors -- including 11 first-team awards, 13 players have been named the league s player of the week, seven have been honored on the conference s all-freshman team -- including 2009 Freshman of the Year Lauren Juric, and eight student-athletes have led the league in various statistical categories at the end of the year. Coaching at one of the nation s top public academic institutions, Gross has been the recruiting coordinator for the Aggies since her arrival in 2004 and, as a former three-year CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII honoree, Gross knows what it takes both athletically and academically to succeed at UC Davis. Off the court, and in the classroom, the Aggies have shined, led by Jessica Campbell, who was a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII honoree in 2008, while also earning a pair of Division I Independent Women s Basketball All-Academic Team honors in 2005 and 2006, a Big West All-Academic Team honor as a senior, as well as the Hubert Heitman Award as the department s Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year in 2008. In her six seasons, Gross has had a total of 15 players collect 25 combined Big West All-Academic Team citations, while Dani Nafekh was named UC Davis W.P. Lindley Award winner as the outstanding scholar-athlete as well as the university s selection as the Big West Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. As a student-athlete from 1993-97 at UC Davis, Gross set school records for career assists (448), steals (300) and three-pointers (163), the first of which still stands. Additionally, she ranks ninth all-time at UC Davis in career scoring, compiling 1,243 points. As a senior, Gross led the Aggies to a school-record 29-3 mark and the school s first appearance at the Division II Elite Eight tournament. UC Davis finished third at the national tourney, beating Bentley in the consolation final. For her part, she won Kodak All-America honorable mention honors and was selected to the Northern California Athletic Conference first team for the second time. However, perhaps her finest achievement was her participation in 101 victories during her four-year career, the winningest span in program history. Gross graduated from UC Davis in 1997, earning her bachelor s degree in organizational studies. She earned her master s degree in Sports Coaching from the United States Sports Academy in 2008. After her collegiate career, Gross went on to play professionally in Denmark (July 1997-Apr. 98) and Israel (July-Dec. 1998). She was inducted into the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003. Gross married UC Davis assistant coach Joe Teramoto in 2010 when they were both assistants on former coach Sandy Simpson s staff. The couple has a son, Joshua, and a daughter, Amelia. 2017 BIG WEST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS 2017 WNIT PARTICIPANTS
