All times local to site BOLD = Home matches at Seattle Academy HOME SWEET HOME: After playing its first 15 matches away from home, Seattle University finally opens its home schedule with WAC contests against Grand Canyon and CSU Bakersfield. The Redhawks are one of the hottest teams in the country, winning seven of their last eight matches to improve to 10-5 overall. After opening the weekend against the Antelopes Thursday night, Seattle U will look for a measure of revenge against the Roadrunners, the team that defeated Seattle U in the championship match of last year s WAC Tournament. Both contests will be available online through the WAC Digital Network (www. wacsports.com/live). THE PREVIOUS WEEK: For the first time since joining the Western Athletic Conference, Seattle University won its first two conference matches of the season, going on the road and defeating UMKC, 3-2, and Chicago State, 3-1. Against the Roos, the Redhawks improved their five-set record under third-year head coach James Finley to 8-1 as Seattle U rebounded from dropping the first set to win the next two sets, and then once again rallied after losing the fourth set to control the fifth set, 15-9. Jelena Vujcin led the Redhawk offense with 18 kills and a.484 hitting percentage, while Matea Mamic notched a double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs in the first four sets before leaving the match due to injury. Kerry Lane dished out a season-high 56 assists, and Kirstin Schauble led the Redhawk defense with 16 digs. Saturday against Chicago State, Seattle U got off to a slow start, although the Redhawks did rally to win the first set before losing the second set. After the intermission, the Redhawks were on fire, hitting.789 (16-1-19) in the third set while going a perfect 11-for-11 in sideout opportunities. Seattle U continued that momentum into the fourth set to earn the victory. The Redhawks hit.350 as a team Saturday, the 10th-best single-match hitting percentage in program history and sixth-highest against a Division I opponent. Iris Ivanis notched a double-double against Chicago State with 18 kills and 14 digs, while Martina Samadan finished with 16 kills on a.462 hitting percentage along with three service aces and four total blocks. NCAA STATISTICAL RANKINGS: As of Sept. 28, Seattle U is 15th in the country in aces per set (1.78) and 32nd in blocks per set (2.59). Individually, Jelena Vujcin is sixth in the country in aces per set (0.56), and Martina Samadan is 11th in Division I in hitting percentage (.432).

SCOUTING GRAND CANYON: The Antelopes enter the weekend with a 2-11 overall record after losing a five-set match to CSU Bakersfield last Saturday. Grand Canyon has been a streaky team, losing its first seven matches before back-to-back wins over Charleston Southern and Niagara, and now a four-match losing streak entering Thursday s match. As a team, the Lopes are hitting.154 and averaging 10.6 kills, 1.11 service aces, 14.38 digs, and 1.82 blocks per set. Natalie Tardy leads the team with 139 kills, followed by Jordyn Sanchez with 103 kills. Michelle Steagall has been the team s setter throughout the season, averaging eight assists per set. Haley Glass leads the team with 11 service aces and 157 digs. At the net, Hannah Hicks leads Grand Canyon with 35 total blocks. SERIES HISTORY: Seattle U has never lost to Grand Canyon on the volleyball court, winning the previous five meetings heading into Thursday s encounter. The first-ever meeting took place Oct. 26, 2005, when both schools were at the Division II level, with the Redhawks sweeping the Lopes. After Grand Canyon started its transition to Division I and joined the WAC, the two teams met again in Phoenix Oct. 2, 2013, with Seattle U rallying to win the match 3-1 after dropping the first set. Iris Ivanis notched a double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs to lead the Redhawks. Just 12 days later, the two teams met again in Seattle, with the Redhawks again losing the first set before taking the next three for a 3-1 win. Martina Samadan and Ivanis each finished with 19 kills and combined for a.507 hitting percentage. Last season, Seattle U earned another 3-1 victory over Grand Canyon in Seattle, led by Samadan with 24 kills, a.500 hitting percentage, and six blocks. In Phoenix, Seattle U was down two sets to one before rallying for a 3-2 victory, taking the fifth set 15-11. Matea Mamic led the offense with 18 kills, Kerry Lane notched a double-double with 57 assists and 12 digs, and Mary Orbeta led the defense with 21 digs. SCOUTING CSU BAKERSFIELD: The Roadrunners enter the weekend with a 3-10 overall record, including a 1-0 conference mark after defeating Grand Canyon in five sets. CSU Bakersfield, the defending WAC Tournament champion, will face Utah Valley Thursday before coming to Seattle for Saturday s contest. As a team, the Roadrunners are hitting.185 and averaging 11.73 kills, 1.04 service aces, 13.06 digs, and 1.33 blocks per set. Setter Luiza Martins is the reigning WAC Player of the Week after earning 64 assists and 24 digs against Grand Canyon. Kelsee Sawyer leads the team with 167 kills and a.269 hitting percentage, while Edithza Urias has 134 kills along with a team-high 15 service aces. Defensively, Sydney Haynes leads the team at the net with 29 total blocks, while Morginne Demarco paces the backline with 116 digs. SERIES HISTORY: This will be the 18th meeting all-time between Seattle U and CSU Bakersfield, with the Roadrunners holding a 10-7 series advantage. CSUB has won the past seven meetings, with Seattle U s last victory over the Roadrunners coming on Nov. 4, 2011. CSU Bakersfield won the rematch the next night, and has won all six meetings between the two teams as conference rivals. The Roadrunners have eliminated the Redhawks from each of the past two WAC Tournaments, in the semifinals in 2013 and in the championship match last year. The Roadrunners swept the Redhawks in all three matches last season. The last time Seattle U took a set from CSU Bakersfield was the opening set of the WAC Tournament semifinal match on Nov. 26, 2013, in Phoenix, Ariz. GOING THE DISTANCE: One of the reasons Seattle U found success last season was its ability to persevere in long matches, as the Redhawks went 5-1 in five-set contests during the 2014 season. The first two five-set matches came in back-to-back contests on the road in mid-september, as the Redhawks rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Eastern Washington, winning the fifth set 15-11, and then holding on to defeat Montana in five sets after taking the deciding set 15-10. After defeating Grand Canyon in five sets on Nov. 13, the Redhawks were able to advance to the finals of the WAC Tournament thanks to dramatic five-set victories over Utah Valley and Missouri-Kansas City on back-toback nights. In James Finley s three seasons at Seattle U, the Redhawks are 8-1 in five-set matches after defeating Missouri-Kansas City in five sets on Sept. 24. HOME AWAY FROM HOME: With the Commitment to Equity renovation of the Connolly Center North Court continuing through the fall, the Seattle University athletics department has come to an agreement with Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences for the Redhawk volleyball team to play its home matches at Seattle Academy during the 2015 season. The entrance to the gymnasium at Seattle Academy is located at 1111 13th Avenue near the corner of 13th Avenue and East Spring Street. Parking will be available in the Seattle University visitor lot, accessible by turning into the SU campus on East Marion Street off 12th Avenue. Tickets for all home Seattle U volleyball matches are available by going to the ticketing website at www.go- SeattleU.com/sutickets or by calling the Seattle U Athletics Ticket Office at 206-398-GOSU (4678). WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Martina Samadan was named WAC Player of the Week on Sept. 21 after helping the Redhawks win four of five matches. This is the first honor of the season for Samadan and the second of her Seattle U career, as she was previously recognized Oct. 21, 2013, after helping the Redhawks defeat Grand Canyon, Chicago State, and Missouri-Kansas City.

PRESEASON PREDICTIONS: The rest of the Western Athletic Conference volleyball coaches believe that Seattle University will be a contender for the 2015 league title, as the Redhawks were picked to finish in third place and three Seattle U players were selected as part of the Preseason All-WAC Team. Defending WAC regular season champion Missouri-Kansas City received four first-place votes and 45 total points to lead the poll, followed closely by New Mexico State with two first-place votes and 40 total points. Seattle U picked up one first-place vote and 37 total points, finishing ahead of CSU Bakersfield, the 2014 WAC Tournament champions, as the Roadrunners received the final first-place vote and 33 total points. Utah Valley placed fifth in the poll with 28 total points, followed by Grand Canyon in sixth place with 20 points, seventh place University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with 13 points, and eighth place Chicago State with eight points. Senior middle blocker Martina Samadan, junior outside hitter Matea Mamic, and sophomore opposite side hitter Jelena Vujcin were named to the Preseason All-WAC Volleyball Team. THE LEADER OF THE REDHAWKS: James Finley begins his third season as head coach of the Seattle University volleyball team. He has a 188-158 (.543) overall record, including a 37-42 (.468) mark so far at Seattle U. In 2014, he led the Redhawks to their second straight winning conference season (8-6) and to the finals of the WAC Volleyball Tournament. Martina Samadan earned First Team All-WAC honors, while Jelena Vujcin was voted onto the WAC All-Newcomer Team. In his first season at Seattle U, he helped the Redhawks post a winning conference record (9-7) and advance to the semifinals of the WAC Tournament. Under his tutelage, Iris Ivanis earned WAC Freshman of the Year honors, while Martina Samadan joined Ivanis as Second Team All-WAC honorees. Finley served as head coach at Virginia Commonwealth University for eight years, compiling a 151-116 (.566) record from 2005 to 2012. He led the Rams to four conference championship matches, including the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament title that advanced VCU into the NCAA Tournament. In 2012, Finley oversaw the team s transition to the Atlantic-10 Conference, where the Rams posted a 10-4 league record as part of a 25-6 overall mark, finishing third in the 12-team league before falling in the conference tournament semifinals. Finley went to VCU from Arizona Western College, where he served as head coach from 2001 to 2005, compiling a 137-37 (.787) record over four seasons. He had been the assistant coach at UTEP for two seasons before heading to Arizona Western. A high school volleyball coach from 1992 to 1999, Finley has run his own volleyball camps since 1995. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Sul Ross State University in 1983 and has been an instructor at Texas A&M University, Arizona Western College, and El Paso Community College. WAC TOURNAMENT: The top six eligible teams in the league standings at the end of the regular season will head to Kansas City, Mo., for the 2015 WAC Volleyball Tournament, hosted by Missouri-Kansas City Nov. 19-21 at the Swinney Recreation Center on campus. Seattle U has won at least one match in each of the previous two WAC Tournaments, reaching the semifinals in 2013 before advancing to the championship match in 2014. CATCHING UP ON THE WAC: Heading into the second weekend of conference play, the Redhawks continue to lead the league in blocks per set (2.59) and service aces per set (1.78). Seattle U is second in the WAC in hitting percentage (.238), third in opponent hitting percentage (.182), assists per set (11.35), and kills per set (12.24), and seventh in digs per set (11.63). Individually, Kerry Lane is at the top of the rankings in assists per set (9.88). Jelena Vujcin leads the way in service aces per set (0.56), followed by Matea Mamic in third place (0.37) and Mary Orbeta in sixth place (0.29). Orbeta moved back into the top 10 in digs, currently sitting ninth in the WAC at 2.71 digs per set. Martina Samadan is second in the WAC in hitting percentage (.432), seventh in the conference in kills per set (2.98) and fourth in blocks per set (1.17), ahead of Maja Stojanovic in sixth place (1.00) and Vujcin in ninth place (0.81). Mamic is 10th in the WAC in kills per set (2.89). WICKED SMART: The 2014-15 Seattle U volleyball team excelled in the classroom, earning the AVCA Team Academic Award after posting a cumulative grade point average over 3.30. Eight members of the team received Academic All-WAC recognition, including returners Iris Ivanis, Kerry Lane, Martina Samadan, and Kirstin Schauble. TOURNAMENT HONORS: At the Molten Classic Aug. 28-29 in Berkeley, Calif., Jelena Vujcin was named tournament MVP after leading the Redhawks with 29 kills, plus earning 15 total blocks, 11 digs, and five aces over the weekend. Kerry Lane was named to the All-Tournament Team, as she finished with 80 assists, 17 digs, 10 total blocks, and four aces. Maja Stojanovic was also selected to the All-Tournament Team after leading the Redhawks with 19 total blocks to go along with 11 kills. Martina Samadan was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Idaho Volleyball Classic Sept. 4-5, collecting 31 kills, eight digs, and six total blocks in the Redhawks three matches. Samadan and Vujcin were both named to the All-Tournament Team at the Middle Tennessee Invitational after helping the Redhawks post a 2-1 record with wins over VCU and Middle Tennessee.
