Welcome TAS Headmaster, Mr Murray Guest Since its inception, the TAS Rugby Carnival has grown to become the largest primary-aged rugby carnival in Australia and it is a great privilege for us to again host what is truly a special event. It is a pleasure to welcome both old friends and new teams experiencing their first weekend in Armidale, the nation s highest city. It is wonderful to have so many players, coaches, parents and supporters willing to travel what is for many, a considerable distance, to help celebrate all that is good in school rugby. Rugby has a special reputation for forging bonds between players from distant parts and different cultures and backgrounds and we are proud that this carnival creates a great opportunity for the camaraderie and sharing of spirit that the game is famous for. This is also a very important event for the Armidale community and we thank the sponsors, organisers and volunteers for their efforts in making this possible. Particular thanks to BLK who remain our carnival sponsor and have given us great support over the years. Finally, I acknowledge TAS Director of Co-curricular Mr Will Caldwell for his passion for this carnival. Director of Co-curricular, Mr Will Caldwell When the first TAS Rugby Carnival was held in 2005, few of us could have imagined how large it would become. That inaugural carnival attracted 18 teams and some 360 players, with renowned rugby schools competing alongside local school and club sides. The carnival has always been about young people having fun, experiencing rugby and meeting people in a carnival atmosphere. During the past decade many friendships have been made and strengthened on the playing fields and on the sidelines, here at the carnival. Murray Guest For our own boys, the carnival is also part of a broad, inclusive, co-curricular program involving sport, the creative arts, public speaking and debating, Will Caldwell and student clubs that engage young people to find their passion in life. Apart from the opportunity it gives them, the TAS Rugby Carnival also reaffirms the School s passion for positive engagement with our wider community something that is only strengthened from year to year. Thank you for your support for the 2015 carnival.

Awards BLK Team of the Carnival Award This award is presented to the team that performs well in all off-field activities as well as displaying impeccable sportsmanship on the field. It is the culmination of all aspects of the weekend and is the highest honour of the carnival. All teams and referees vote for this award on completion of final matches, so please keep this in mind over the weekend. Referees The referees at the carnival are part of a program for the development of young referees in NSW. The program, which has been running since 1999, identifies young referees (15-18 years) in their home zones as referees with enthusiasm and ability. TAS is thrilled that a number of our young referees have been selected for carnival duties in 2015. ARU Junior Gold Program TAS - a National Training Centre The history of rugby at TAS goes back to 1894 when the school opened. This commitment to rugby and the drive of our staff has lead to TAS being recognised as a national training centre for rugby under a unique partnership with the Australian Rugby Union s Junior Gold Cup development program. Under the JGC program, players compete in a national competition involving 24 teams in each of two age groups, while at the same time being able to participate in their local club and school competitions. ARU and TAS have united to provide facilities and specialist training to develop the on and off-field rugby skills of 15-17 year old boys in the ARU JGC Northern Inland zone (incorporating the NSW North West and New England) who have talent, character and commitment. The partnership provides access to national program coaching models used across the 24 recognised Junior Gold Program centres in Australia. The JGC Program involves in excess of 1400 players and more than 100 volunteer coaches, nationally, and is conducted between November and March, supporting the long-term development of players over the off and pre-season.
