Many great opportunities to dance. The Valentine s Day dance and Chili Cook-Off were both well attended and a good time was had by all. We are having great turnouts at our dances so far this year. Your board has been working on a number of issues. First: regarding Proxy Voting for Elections and By-Laws changes. The Board felt the issues that face our club were not sufficient to warrant Proxy Voting and the issues that it brought with it. We hope that all concerned members will turnout for the elections in December. Next: at the Valentine s Day dance the meal served was donated to us as a Thank You by the VFW. They are appreciative of our continued support of their Operation Uplink. The Board will send a letter of thanks. Third: Long time club member Gail Roberson asked the board for permission to do a ladies fashion show. Our board agreed. The Fashion Show will take place at our March 24 th Moose dance. It should be fantastic. Gail owns Bloomingail s Consignment in Calabash. I also want to thank club VP Chuck Boney for filling in for me at our Valentine s Day dance in my absence. Our Sunday February 19 th dance was well attended. DJ Jerry Burrage did a great job and kept the dance floor full. It was a beautiful day at the beach club. We had about 50 of our club members attend. In addition we had a good crowd from the Coastal Shag Club. We started cooking the oysters at 1 PM and the last one came off the grill about 3 PM. They were great. We are looking forward to the March 19 th pig-picking courtesy of Steve and Patti Smith with DJ Claude Collins. We will have a dance at the Lazy Turtle in May. It seems as if a large number of our members are enjoying themselves at our Sunday dances. Three couples from the SOBS just returned from a Shag cruise with dance instructors Sam and Lisa West. What a great time. We will be mentioning Shag dance cruises in some upcoming newsletter articles. We also have 20 plus SOBS couples getting ready for the April Shag-Extravaganza in Columbia, SC. There are many opportunities to have a good time in the Shag dance community. Please let me or any other board member know if you have any ideas or want to help out. Our club continues to need the help of its members in an effort to make things go smoothly. With 200+ members we should have many who want to help out and meet their fellow members. March s board meeting will be Thursday, March 9 th at the OKI VFW starting at 6PM. March also brings our St. Patrick s Day Dance. We will encourage the Wearing of the Green and at the Moose dance, there will also be the fashion show. So come early. SOS Spring Safari is right around the corner in April. Our club already has a registered parade entry. Come be a part of a good time. The theme for the parade this year is Dance Fever. Our traditional Freepour will be after the parade. I have the cars, DJ and Truck lined up. We will have beads to throw to the crowd. We need members to dance down the street as part of the Dance Fever Theme. More info to come. Got some input for decorations/costumes etc.? Come to the Board Meeting or email me. Lots to look forward to in 2017! We hope to see you on the dance floor. SOBS Winter Series #3 Shag Dance & Southern Pig Pickin Sunday, March 19 th 1 to 5 PM John Hutton, President 2017 Society of Brunswick Shaggers Board Members... M a rch 2017 The Beach B ea t! P age 2 Executive Committee Meeting Minutes, February 1, 2017... PRESENT: John Hutton, Chuck Boney, Steve Smith, Cathy Myers, and Ellen Wester Meeting was called to order at 5:58 PM by John. SECRETARY S REPORT: The January minutes were approved. TREASURER S REPORT: Steve reported that there are only 28 SOS cards left. Checks are needed for the DJ and the Moose Lodge. Uplink Donations: The donation to New Hope Clinic will be $500 up from $324 last year. John will coordinate the check presentation at the March VFW Dance. We received a letter sent from the Oak Island VFW to the NC Department of VFW with the check for $6,000 which we contributed to the Operation Uplink Program. It stated that to date, our club has donated over $47,000 to this project. OLD BUSINESS: The January dances went very well. We had a great crowd for the Re-Up/Join-Up dance. DJ John Hook did a great job with the music. Negotiations with the Moose Lodge have now concluded with the Lodge accepting $100 per dance for the first 4 months, then $125 per dance after that. This will require members to pay $5 and guests to pay $8 at the Moose Lodge Dances only. Elections/Absentee Voting and Proxy: John spoke to 20+ shag clubs at the ACCS Meeting and none of them are concerned with absentee or voting or proxy voting. Steve motioned that we drop the idea. Cathy seconded. OD Pavilion Prints: 5 of the 10 were sold. A check was given at the ACCS Meeting. The sale of 2017 SOS Cards continues. MEMBERSHIP: No report at this meeting. However, the suggestion was made that the person working the door be the one to mark attendees off the list at each dance. NEW BUSINESS: February 10 th dance will be a pasta dinner at the VFW. February 24 th dance will be a chili cook-off with a Mardi Gras theme. The remainders of our Winter Series Dances at the Lazy Turtle will be on February 19 th and March 19 th. April 16 th has been added with Tim Holland volunteering to DJ. The February Dance will feature an Oyster Roast. Steve and Patty Smith are providing a Pig Picking for the March Dance. The Spring SOS Parade is Saturday, April 29 th, with our annual Free Pour following the parade. The situation with the OD Pavilion is still in question, so John is working to get the Tiki Bar at the Spanish Galleon as the location for the Freepour. The parade theme this year is Dance Fever. Ideas for our presentation are still under consideration. We will not be able to have many cars in the parade this year. Gail Roberson is interested in doing a Bloomingail s Fashion show at one of our Sunday Dances at the Lazy Turtle. April 16 th looks like a good date. John will discuss with her. Meeting was adjourned at 6:47 PM. Cathy Myers, Secretary

M a rch 2017 The Beach B ea t! P age 3 The Perfect Dance Partner (National Fast Dance Association Newsletter - October/December 2013, by Benson Wong) Dance Heaven! That s a destination that most of us are trying to find. That perfect partner for that perfect dance. We all have ideas about the kind of partner that makes the dance perfect. We think that we might have those qualities that make us desirable as dance partners. Do we really know for sure? Some readers have asked that question because they want to know what they could to improve their chances of getting themselves placed at the top of someone s dance card. Of course, I made them also tell me what they didn t want The guys want to appreciate finding/dancing with a partner who dances with them as opposed to the follower/leader who uses his/her leader/follower as a prop for his/her own showboating. A little eye contact goes a long way towards this too. It s also nice to know that if I make a mistake, my dance partner will back me up and cover my mistake. If we lose contact, my partner will continue dancing as if we were still connected and will eventually find my hand without my moving out of position or stopping The women want someone who want to dance with them and seems to be enjoying himself, even if they make mistakes. Someone who doesn t dance too high above their level. Someone who dances to the beat. An ideal partner knows where the beat is (extremely important). Someone who doesn t jerk them around with a hard lead or pump my arms up and down. Someone who is aware of the other dancers around us and keeps us away from people who are out of control and dangerous. Someone who will warn them before they get on the dance floor if he just learned how to do the intro lesson and really doesn t know how to dance. An ideal partner SMILES makes eye contact more than one in a while. A firm, clear, decisive lead, personal style, connects with the music and dances to it. The guys don t want spaghetti arms or someone who pulls them off their feet. The women don t want someone who goes off and on the beat. A stranger who tries to do sexy moves, like pulling you in very close, getting very close to you face, and gazing at you. SOBS Winter Series Dances at The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill... Hey SOBS! Our two SOBS Winter Series shag dances at The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill on the OKI ocean front have been great successes! The Sunday February 19 th dance & oyster roast with DJ Jerry Burrage was a great turnout with at least 50 SOBS. Our next Winter Series #3 dance on March 19 th will have DJ Claude Collins and a Southern pig pickin courtesy of Steve & Patti Smith. The dance starts at 1 PM to 5 PM. More details will follow as we get closer to those dates. We re just trying to give you a few more opportunities to wear out those Weejuns!

M a rch 2017 The Beach B ea t! P age 4 Did You Re-Up / Join-Up Yet?... If you didn t, you know who you are! OK fellow SOBS, it s Re-Up / Join-Up time! Your membership in the SOBS ran out on January 31 st if you haven t Re-Up. Our next dance on March 10 th at the VFW is your opportunity to Re-Up in the best Shag Club on the East Coast! It s also a great opportunity to get your shagging friends to Join-Up with us as well. The $20 per person Re-Up / Join-Up fee will get you a year s membership and admission to the dance. NOTE: For those of you who are going to Re-Up there is no need to fill out the membership form again. Unless you are changing some of your membership information or we need to make any corrections, let us know at the registration table and pay your dues. Of course, new members will have to initially fill out the form. A Membership Application for your friends is on the last page of this newsletter for their convenience. Checks should made out to the SOCIETY OF BRUNSWICK SHAGGERS. As with most non-profit social clubs, volunteering is the backbone of our organization as well as a great chance to become familiar with the entire Membership. We ask our Members to step up for whatever small part you would like to play. HOSPITALITY responsible for greeting Members and Guests at the door of our dances. They take money in and check off Members/Guests at the door and direct questions (Membership, SOS Cards, etc.) to a SOBS Officer. They could also check on the Guests throughout the night and answer any questions. COMMUNICATION anyone is welcome to write articles or submit pictures for our Newsletter/Website. Your experiences at events (dances, SOS, etc.) would certainly be welcome. Deadline for our Newsletter is the 25th of the month. ENTERTAINMENT responsible for helping set up (decorate) and clean up at selected dances. These are important positions as we need to leave our venues as we found them and the Board Members do eventually tire of the tasks. SOCIAL volunteers to participate (dance or make costumes) in the SOS Parade in April, sell raffle tickets or procure items for auction at our Charity event, and to sell 50/50 tickets at our regular dance events. ANYTHING NEEDED This is the MEGA-VOLUNTEER who is available at most club functions. You can offer up your services at any event and as well as making yourselves available for last minute needs.
