One such question was asked the other day. A man called up and asked if we had leaves Yes the summer is over but many of you are still enjoying this great weather despite the leaves! I am quite impressed by the number of members who have attended various events this past season. The best attended event was the Night Golf held in August with 66 members participating. At our Members Closing and Awards night we announced two new events for next year. A Ryder Cup event will be held in late September 2011 and we have named it the SPIRIT CUP. This will be a match play event held annually. We will also be introducing a Friday Night Couples League which will be lots of fun and a great chance to get to know more members. I would like to thank Corinne Lung and her ladies executive for their continued efforts in organizing over 200 keen golfers as well for their support of the Pro Shop. Big thanks to Gary Miller for his tireless efforts in organizing and running the Men s league. River Spirit has been invited to host the 2011 CLGA Senior Ladies Championship in early August. This is 2 day event and we are looking for members to volunteer to assist. We are also looking for a member to step forward and chair this event. So if you are interested please let me know. Cathy Burton

Page 2 River Spirit Golf Club Newsletter River Spirit Eagles Ladies League Report It s hard to believe that the River Spirit Eagles golf season is officially finished - all good things must come to an end. Our Mardi Gras tournament was a great success! The enthusiastic members turned out in force despite a dismal weather forecast. Colorful creative costumes and carts (and beads lots of beads) provided the bright spot in an otherwise dark grey day. There were some 60 Eagles that played golf and another 60 Eagles joined up at the end of the day for dinner. Chef Heather Clarke and her staff treated us to an amazing delicious Cajun-style buffet. This wind-up tournament provided us with another opportunity to raise more money for our charity Ovarian Cancer Canada. Sales from 50/50 tickets brought in $828.00, and the ipad raffle raised $1,187.00. Donna David was the 50/50 ticket winner taking home $414.00 and Kirsten Betts was the ipad winner CONGRATULATIONS! The total Eagles donation to Ovarian Cancer Canada is $2,093.86. Final awards for the Ringer Board and Bogie Train were awarded as well. Ringer Board Winners: Nicole Wadley, Terry Brownlee, and Kirsten Betts Bogie Train Winner: Lynn Grayston To view more of the Eagles photos simply click on: http://picasaweb.google.com/riverspiriteagles

Page 4 Page 4 River Spirit River Golf Spirit Club Newsletter Golf Club Newsletter River Spirit Eagles Ladies League Report Cont MANY THANKS To Cathy Burton, Head Professional, for her guidance and assistance, and of course her great sense of humor, throughout the season. Proshop staff we couldn t have such a successful season without your help and organizational abilities. Narjes Rivers and your serving staff always made the end of our golf day pleasant and rewarding (even if our game wasn t). Norm Duret and the Maintenance Staff the course has been in great shape this season. Points to Ponder over the winter: 1. Never try to keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing. 2. The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about the golf swing. 3. No matter how bad you are playing, it is always possible to play worse. 4. You can hit a two-acre fairway 10% of the time and a two-inch branch 90% of the time. 5. Since bad shots come in groups of three, a fourth bad shot is actually the beginning of the next group of three. 6. Hazards attract; fairways repel. Keep this in mind. 7. A ball you can see in the rough from 50 yards away is not yours. Have a great winter from the 2010 River Spirit Eagles! Look for the latest Eagle update early in 2011 prior to registration.

River Spirit Golf Club Newsletter Page 5 River Spirit Men s League Report As the season winds down I would like to thank everyone who took part in the Tuesday Night Men s League. Our numbers grow every year and had over 100 men signed up this year. Thanks to the Pro shop staff, administration department maintenance crew and F&B department for all their efforts this year in assisting us with our league play. At our year end closing tournament everyone enjoyed a delicious Prime Rib Dinner prepared by Chef Heather. The Men s League also wants to wish Ron Beggs a speedy recovery following major surgery this month. Have a good winter and we will see you in the spring! Food & Beverage Report On behalf of the entire Food and Beverage team I would like to thank you all for a great season! We have thoroughly enjoyed interacting with you and were very pleased in the increase that we saw this season at all of our member events! We hope that you found some of the changes in the food and beverage department this season to have improved and really appreciate your support and feedback! Although mother nature did not give us many beautiful golfing days this season, we hope that you enjoyed your experience with us and that October brings us a well deserved extension to play a little longer! We look forward to more fun next year. Sending you and your families an early happy holiday wish from the entire River Spirit family.

Page 6 River Spirit Golf Club Newsletter Course Superintendant Report It s hard to believe it s almost time to close up the course. We really didn t have the summer to prepare ourselves for winter so soon. Last season at this time we were already closed so at least this year we are enjoying a nice fall. We are applying fungicides and will be blowing out the irrigation lines on October 18 th. In the meantime our leaf blowers are running 24/7 with all that fall has to offer. Have a good winter and we will see you next season. Hope for an early spring next year! Norm (Don) Duret Golf Jokes of the Month Did You Know? Tiger Woods was introduced to the game of golf when he was 9 months old. The World s first ever golf tournament for women was held New Year s Day 1811 in Musselburgh. The first golf balls were made of thin leather stuffed with feathers. Tightly-packed feathers made balls that flew the farthest. Feather balls were used until 1848.

Page 8 Chef Heathers Recipe of the Month River Spirit Golf Club Newsletter Heather s Roasted Butternut Squash Soup With Grapefruit & Ginger Infused Crème Fraiche Ingredients 4 tablespoons olive oil 2 small onions, chopped 10 whole cloves garlic 2 medium carrots, chopped 2 medium butternut squash peeled, seeded, and cubed 2 medium potatoes, peeled, and cubed Water or chicken stock to cover Heather s delicious soup was a big hit at the Members Closing & Awards Night! salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste pure organic grapefruit juice whipping cream 1tbsp ginger Directions 1. Mix onion, garlic, carrot and squash with the olive oil and a little salt & pepper. Roast in a 400 degree oven for 30 minutes or until veggies are soft and browned. Put in large pot and add potatoes and enough water or stock to cover. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover pot, and simmer 40 minutes, or until all vegetables are tender. 2. Using an immersion blender blend until smooth. Return to pot, and mix in grapefruit juice and cream until desired consistency. (I like about 1 cup grapefruit juice with just a splash of cream). Season with salt and pepper. 3. Mix together grated ginger and crème fraiche. Leave overnight and then strain out the ginger. Season with salt and drizzle over the top of the soup.
