CELEBRATING 26 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Kansas City Chapter - American Singles Golf Association - August 2018 President s News The year is flying by and it is already August. We still have lots of golf to play though. Our next golf event will be a road trip to Columbia on August 24 th -26 th and still to come is our final road trip to Lake of the Ozarks, September 28 th -30 th. We have been busy raising funds for our annual banquet which will be held on Saturday, November 3 rd... be sure to save the date! Thank you for all your contributions from raffles and Big Break Leawood. There have been some questions about whether a guest is eligible to win a proximity hole prize at a golf event. There were also questions about how the signup list for participating golfers should be monitored to check for names of nonrenewals and guests. At the August Board meeting we discussed both issues. Your Board adopted the following policy: A motion was made, seconded, and approved that only members can receive money for proximity hole prizes. The Board also agreed that it is the responsibility of all members to review the sign-up sheets and make a golf host aware of any non-members or guests. (Adopted August 2018) As I am writing this message, I am getting ready to go to the hospital for my second surgery this year. I am really excited to be getting back to golf with everyone. Remember to submit pictures to Bev H and Julie R for the newsletter, calendar and banquet slide show. Also "a bad day at golf is better than a good day at work" (or recovering from surgery!} You all have a good round for me! ~Donna Deleon, President Vice President s News I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who participated in the raffle at the July general meeting. It was another successful raffle, we raised $111.00 for the general fund. Mingo celebrated his return to our golf group by winning the greens fees four pack to Prairie Highlands. Looking ahead to our August meeting, we will be raffling off a four pack of greens fees to Creekmoor. Be sure to see me to buy your tickets before the meeting starts. Also, at our August meeting there will be a silent auction for gently used golf balls donated by Bob McDonald, with the proceeds helping fund our fall awards banquet. Thank you, Bob! With summer starting to wind down, we are approaching the time to start thinking about upcoming board member changes for 2019. As we know, the success of our group is based on the great folks who have volunteered their time to serve on Upcoming Multi-Chapter Events (see SinglesGolf.com/events) River Cruise - Paris, France, September 11-18, 2018 - This cruise is SOLD OUT, however, you can get on the wait list. This will be a river cruise up the Seine River. We'd like to spend 10-12 days in France. Of course, if you have the time, you can spend some extra days in Paris with friends. Secure a cabin-mate and save $$. Details at SinglesGolf.com/RiverCruise - the site has a cost chart and list of who's coming. To see a video of the river cruise, go to SinglesGolf.com/RiverCruiseVideo Cabo San Lucas - Late February or Early March, 2019. We're looking at staying 6-7 days, playing 3-4 rounds of golf and exploring what the area has to offer. Details out in August, 2018. The future success of our group is reliant on our members being active in the board and its decision making process. My question to all of you, Would you consider filling a board position? We have a great group of folks and it would be a great opportunity to have an impact in our future success! If you have an interest in serving on the board and would like to be involved in making 2019 another great year for our group, please let me know. ~Rick Buie, Vice President Treasurer s Report Treasurer s Report ending July 31st General Fund: $3,073.01 Hole-in-One Fund: $1,584.00 ~ Patty Ford, Treasurer Golf Events Falcon Valley Golf Course Golf of Thrones, Friday, July 27 th, hosted by Vince and Anna Eight teams competed for dominance and fabulous prizes to be crowned Victor of the Golf of Thrones. Upon arrival, every team (aka House) received a secret power and a weakness. They plotted to use their strength and leverage their weakness at the most opportune time. But these houses weren't just playing against each other, they were also playing against the "Dark Lord!" At the end of the round, the teams submitted their final scores... or had they? House Lopez had a special power: "Once per game you may substitute one score on a hole belonging to another team for a score on one hole for your team". They targeted a hole belonging Team Nicklaus. Little did they know that Team Nicklaus had a single strength of their own. Where other houses had strengths that allowed them to tee off much closer to the green, or to lengthen the radius of a gimme, Team Nicklaus had just one simple strength: "You May block any team from stealing a score from you." So House Lopez's plan to steal the lead from House Nicklaus was foiled and House Nicklaus took the Golf of Thrones. House Nicklaus was comprised of: Wayne H, Gerri P, Peggy S, and Rick C. A very special thank you to GREAT helpers, Suzanne J, Sara S, and Anna K! Manhattan Road Trip, August 3rd-5th, hosted by Bob H and Tom P It was our third year in a row to play golf in the Little Apple, Manhattan, Kansas. We had as many as 24 golfers on Saturday and as few as 13 on Sunday. We played Lake Shawnee Golf Course on Friday and Colbert Hills on Saturday and Sunday. Since Manhattan is so close to Kansas City, this lead to several people to play one round and go home. It also lead Tom and I to consider playing other courses in Topeka for future trips to Manhattan. Tom P did a nice job researching Topeka courses and there are other great options for next year. Thanks to Randy G for getting early tee times at Lake Shawnee. Big Break Leawood Qualifier and Main Event, August 1 st and August 11 th, hosted by Bob and Mara For those who have never participated in Big Break Leawood, you re really missing out! Everything is first-class, starting with the qualifying round. At the qualifying round we drink, eat and compete. Fourteen people qualified for the main event which was held Saturday, August 11th at the Country Club of Leawood. The winning team was Bob H, Patty F, Aimee B and Debbie C. Bob H said they won due to the expert putting of his three teammates. Second place was Mara K, Mingo M, Kay F, and Curtis M. Bob M lost his Soul on the course, I mean Sole! He really did lose the sole of his shoe. Thank you Bob and Mara for donating so generously to our group every year! We are privileged to have you as members. Look for e-mails and sign-up sheets at the monthly meeting for these upcoming golf events: Fred Arbanas Golf Course, Monday, September 3 rd, hosted by Rose Marie F and Brad C Adams Point Golf Course, Sunday September 9 th, hosted by Patricia P and Miles H Lake of the Ozarks Road Trip, Friday- Sunday, September 28th-30th, hosted by Kenna Heim and Sandy Kolderup ~Julie Robertson., Golf Chairperson
