MONTHLY MEDAL (MAY) Article by Manfred Tan Our past years outing at Seletar Golf Club for our medal day have not been too fruitful with increment weather constantly foiling plans. At the start of this year's game, it threatened to be possibly no different. The rain carried over from the whole morning to the afternoon. However, our 38 golfers were undaunted and soldiered on in the pestering rain. Alas when the first flights closed in on their front nine, the sky cleared up and the May 2017 medal saw to a successful conclusion with all players completing the full 18 holes. Famed for its tough layout and tricky holes, not to mention the mouthwatering char kway teow and chai tao kway dished out at the refreshment hut before the 15th hole (another well thought out hole layout worthy to its Index 2 ranking), Seletar has its nick of keeping good scoring in check. Hence it was no surprise that our 3 worthy medal winners returned a score close to level par equivalent with only a point differentiating each winner. Dinner was served up at the golf course and players tucked into a sumptuous buffet spread to wind down the day, during which time, we warmly welcomed Lee Shyong and Chris Chia who were the two new faces to join our NUSS golf game. Winners Champion David Tan 37pts 1 st Runner Up Lim Soo Hwee 36pts 2 nd Runner Up Amy Ho 35pts (OCB) Winners of the day (L-R): David Tan, Lim Soo Hwee, Amy Ho with Golf Section Committee Member, Manfred Tan LADIES GOLFERS GATHERING (JUNE) Article by Chong Dan Chyi NUSS Golf Section organised an inaugural Get-Together and Sharing session on 3 June 2017 for its lady members. Besides providing an additional platform for lady members to socialise and to share their golfing experiences, the other twin objective of this session was aimed at hyping up interest in golf amongst the ladies group. The session was held at the Chill-Lab with light refreshments served and welcome gifts dished out. We were honoured to have Ms Joyce Lam as our guest speaker. Joyce is an avid golfer and a Singapore Golf Association certified referee. The session included a 40-minute video illustrating golf rules and etiquette, followed by Q&A, which saw an active participation from the attendees. It was a wonderful get-together on a Saturday afternoon and the committee is looking forward to organising more of such events to foster friendships through golf. Page 3 of 7
OVERSEAS TRIP TO PERTH (JUNE) Article by Chang Shern Hin (Golfing Group) From the steaming valleys of Chiang Mai to the air-conditioned, almost frigid environment of Perth, Western Australia (WA) our jolly band of intrepid golfers rolled into town for another edition of the NUSS Golf Section overseas trip. The cold and windy conditions did not deter our golfers from battling the elements and the exposed, flattish course at The Links Kennedy Bay. However, don t allow the gentle flat and wide appearance fool you. Thick bush lined both sides of the fairways and the wind played havoc with wayward strikes and the balls had a propensity to get lost in the bush or land in the numerous pot hole bunkers that dotted the landscape. This was propounded by warnings of snakes in the bush and most golfers would abandon search of their balls rather than tempt fate. A course where prudent ball striking is definitely recommended. Araluen Golf Resort greeted our group on the second day, a beautiful inland old course with tall tree lined fairways, a stark departure from the links fare the day before. The golfers thoroughly enjoyed their game on the friendly fairways and the gentle wind conditions due to the matured wooded nature of the course. Besides the golf, we were treated to an excellent lunch of perfectly baked Salmon and chips before the game and the nice warm fireplace in the lounge of the stately club house thereafter. The final day was played at The Cut Golf Course. Truly a gem of a golf course. Although linksy in set up, there were wonderful features of dramatic and steep approaches to the greens as well as narrow avenues of downhill approaches which required some element of bump and run to keep the ball on the greens. What caught the eye most was the vistas of the azure ocean which was almost always in sight throughout the course. The benign conditions contributed to a perfect round of golf which I m sure all the golfers enjoyed and return their best scores. The lunch on this day was a whopping huge burger contrived with delicious soft black buns and a mouth-watering piece of fried chicken and an egg as filling. Yummy! (Note: The Publication Committee would like to register its heart-felt gratitude to Shern, for once again contributing his writeup to the newsletter, besides the earlier piece done on the trip to Chiang Mai) Overall Champion Overall Champion Peter Teo 35 / 38 pts Araluen Golf Resort Men s Division Champion Winston Woh 31 pts 1 st Runner Up Lim Kian Seng 29 pts 2 nd Runner Up Ronald Yeo 28 pts Araluen Golf Resort Ladies Division Champion Chiew Siow Hoon 29 pts (OCB) Runner Up Toh Siew 29 pts The Cut Golf Course Men s Division Champion Ng Boon Hong 37 pts 1 st Runner Up Chin Ming Lek 36 pts 2 nd Runner Up Eddie Lee 33 pts Champions (Clockwise): Peter Teo, Winston Woh, Chiew Siow Hoon, Cynthia Tin and Ng Boon Hong with Golf Section Convenor, Joseph Ng The Cut Golf Course Ladies Division Champion Cynthia Tin 34 pts Runner Up Ho Li Eng 32 pts Page 4 of 7
OVERSEAS TRIP TO PERTH (JUNE) CON T Article by Siva Retnam (Non-Golfing Group) For the group of 12 non-golfers (the largest we d ever had on an overseas trip to date), a two-day planned tour brought us to the key scenic spots of the City, Fremantle and Swan Valley. Day One was spent viewing the heart of the city (St George's Terrace, Bell Tower, Parliament House and Barracks Arch), capped with the visit the beautiful King s Park. The group headed south thereafter, taking the scenic route via the famed Cottesloe Beach and onto Fremantle. Day Two saw the group headed North-Easterly towards Swan Valley, WA oldest wine growing region and home to an evergrowing list of restaurants and cafes, wineries, breweries and artisan wares. Amongst the activities the group enjoyed was a group guided tour of Caversham Wildlife Park to see koalas, kangaroos and wombats; not forgetting wine tasting at Sandalford Winery. Shopping opportunities abound at the Margaret River Chocolate Company, House of Honey, Mondo Nougat and Morish Nut. Day Three saw group of 12 headed in their separate ways, taking the opportunity to either comb the town or to just chill and relax on this free and easy day. Evidently, news friendships and a strong camaraderie was built just over these 3 days. It is no surprise that this bunch of revellers simply can t wait for the next overseas non-golf trip. All in all, a truly memorable golfing and non-golfing holiday and one we all look forward to experience again in the future. Welcome our New Section Members (L-R): Rusuanti Tewira, Winoto Adijanto and Lee Hoo Leng with Golf Section Convenor, Joseph Ng. Page 5 of 7

GOLF TRIVA Article by Manfred Tan Many words have been uttered on and off the golf course. Here s a collection of a few Quote from the Legend -the one and only: I m the best. I just haven t played yet. - Muhammad Ali (when asked about his Golf game) Quotes to think about seriously, if you wanna improve your game: "The most important shot in golf is the next one." Ben Hogan (I like this one best) Of all the hazards, Fear is the worst. Sam Snead (how true this is) "The more I practice, the luckier I get." Gary Player (keep up with this guy if you can.1,300 sit-ups every day at the age of 80+) Quotes A subject not to be messed around with: "If you're caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1-iron. Not even God can hit a 1-iron." Lee Trevino (trouble is, no one carries a 1-iron anymore, let alone a 4 iron) "The only time my prayers are never answered is on the golf course." Billy Graham I found Jesus on the golf course. Well at least I heard his name several times. - (name withheld) Quotes Um Hum!: "One of the reasons Arnie Palmer is playing so well is that, before each final round, his wife takes out his balls and kisses them. Oh my God, what have I just said?" (You guessed right) A TV Golf Commentator (not to be named). "They call it golf because all the other four-letter words were taken." Raymond Floyd (well said Ray) Golf and sex are about the only things you can enjoy without being good at. (name withheld) Quotes from the rest: "When I die, bury me on the golf course so my husband will visit." Unknown Author (Unknow for a reason, and best kept that way) "If you think it's hard to meet new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball." Jack Lemmon (good advice, and seriously, don t ever do that!) If you drink, don't drive. Don't even putt. - Dean Martin (listen hard Folks!) Quotes that sums it all up: They say golf is like life, but don't believe them. Golf is more complicated than that. - Gardner Dickinson. (Spot on akin to a hole-in-one statement) Page 7 of 7
