safety solutions for evacuation and rescue at height

Tens of thousands of devices in use today are testimony to the quality, functionality, usability and durability of the products Uniline offer. Confidence with such products is critical and the quality of design, innovation and ease of use, combined with 25 years of experience from our manufacturing partner Mittelmann Safety Products provide it in abundance. evacuation & rescue 02 In the event that a person working at height falls whilst attached to a fall protection system, it is very unlikely that they will be able to recover themselves. If this is the case, then specialist equipment used by trained personnel will be required to quickly and efficiently affect a rescue or recovery. Failure to recover a worker suspended in a safety harness following a fall within a period of 20 minutes could lead to suspension trauma, which in some cases can be fatal. In order to achieve such a rescue or recovery in time, it is essential that work is correctly planned, risks considered and intuitive equipment is available for use by competent people. Due to an adverse perception of complexity and a lack of understanding, rescue and evacuation planning is often ignored in all but specialist contracting sectors. As well as the need to rescue personnel that have fallen, may be injured and in need of direct help by others, there are also many situations where a person working at height may need to quickly escape. This may be because of a life threatening situation or simply because of an equipment failure that has left them stranded. In this case, products which offer fast evacuation or recovery are required. Uniline Safety Systems supply a range of brilliantly engineered and highly intuitive rescue and evacuation products, that when combined as part of a complete access solution, effectively mitigate workplace risks. Each device has been developed to offer simplicity of use and increase user confidence so that rescue provision can be considered and implemented by those that need it across a wide range of industry sectors. In many cases products offer cross functionality, which additionally reduces the need to carry multiple pieces of rescue equipment and saves money in both product and training. 04 There are many reasons why employers should make provision for rescue and recovery arrangements when planning work at height. 1. The casualty needs to be attended to and recovered to a position of safety quickly 2. It is the employers responsibility to plan work at height including rescue provision and not the responsibility of another organisation or individual 3. Work at Height regulations require it When making provision, consider that employees should not engage in any activity, including planning, supervising or carrying out rescue activities unless they are competent to do so. More detailed information on rescue during work at height can be obtained by contacting Uniline Safety Systems Ltd and also by visiting www.wahsa.org.uk where technical guidance notes can be downloaded. Quality The rescue products supplied by Uniline are subject to stringent quality inspections during the production process to ensure every device is in good working order. This ensures the safety of your personnel. Furthermore each device has been thoroughly tested by a European Notified Body to the required standard and has also undergone rigorous development testing before being placed on the market. Uniline operates an ISO9001:2000 Quality System. Associated Products & Services Uniline Safety Systems manufacture a wide range of quality anchorage solutions to protect people working at height and mitigate workplace risk. Lift-Evac 06 LIFT-EVAC EN341 class A & EN1496 ANSI Z359.4 160-669-509 (EN Device) 160-669-522 (ANSI Device) A controlled rate descent device for evacuation, raising and lowering of a worker or casualty. The product offers high levels of safety. Best for work positioning over short distances up to 20m and for high level rescue of a casualty from almost any situation you may come across. Easy to anchor and control and intuitive to use due to its ratchet style raise and lower facility. The ratchet handle is telescopic to give more leverage when required and a second handle provides stability and control during use. This makes the raising of two persons very comfortable compared with other rescue products. The Lift-evac can be used to recover a casualty whilst the rescuer remains in a safe position, or if necessary the rescuer can descend to the casualty whilst maintaining complete control of the device. Especially good for wind energy rescue applications and confined space rescue applications, but due to its ease of use can be applied in a wide range of work and rescue situations from construction to broadcast and telecoms. Highly recommended product. Work height: Up to 160m for 2 persons at a time (200kg) Rate of descent/ascent: 0.8 metres per second descent 0.2 metres per second ascent (dependant upon operator competence and fitness) Rope: 10mm diameter kernmantle rope (: 163-660-601. Order per metre) LIFT-EVAC DOUBLE EN341 Class A & EN1496 ANSI Z359.4 160-669-510 (EN Device) 160-669-523 (ANSI Device) A controlled rate descent device for evacuation, raising and lowering of a worker or casualty. The product offers high levels of safety. Best for work positioning over short distances up to 30m and for high level rescue of a casualty from almost any situation you may come across. Easy to anchor and control and intuitive to use due to its double handle ratchet style raise and lower facility. The ratchet handles are telescopic to give more leverage when required. This makes the raising of two persons very comfortable compared with other rescue products. The double handled Lift-evac is especially good for situations where ascent of a taller structure is required or where a faster evacuation from a confined space may be beneficial. Work height: Up to 160m for 2 persons at a time (200kg) Rate of descent/ascent: 0.8 metres per second descent 0.4 metres per second ascent (dependant upon operator competence and fitness) Rope: 10mm diameter kernmantle rope (: 163-660-601. Lift-Evac 08 Lift-Evac Work Kits MULTI ACCESS I Establish a fast and simple solution to suspended access work: Access to windows and facades for maintenance tasks cannot always be achieved using ground based solutions or mobile elevated work platforms. In these cases MultiAccess I provides a safe solution. The simple compact design, combined with the systems operational range, offers versatile access possibilities. To achieve a safe access solution, the worker simply needs; two anchorage points conforming to EN795 the MultiAccess 1 Kit simple training in the competent use of the product From then on, façade maintenance and inspection tasks can be carried out in comfort and safety. MultiAccess I consists of the following building blocks: A LiftEvac or LiftEvac Double with the appropriate rope length A Full Body Harness (MKA20 E Click) fitted with a back support A work seat (FR 2) inclusive of a footrest Lanyard of the appropriate length + mobile fall arrestor (AH3F-12KM) All components can also be used independently as personal protective equipment against a fall in the unlikely event of system breakdown. How to operate with MultiAccess I After connecting the LiftEvac and rope lanyard to their anchor points (ensuring ropes are protected around building or structural edges) the operative can safely descend or ascend the façade of the building or structure with the benefit of: Controlled lowering Controlled raising Controlled descent in an emergency or when the work task is finished A comfortable sitting system Low energy expenditure through the use of the two handled LiftEvac A purely mechanical system, completely independent of power PEOPLES SAFETY LTD evacuation & rescue at height

Access and egress in a wide range of environments is made simple with the Multiaccess work systems, incorporating the innovative Liftevac. MULTIACCESS II MULTIACCESS III A safe system for confined space access and egress Not all tanks, containers, silos or confined spaces are accessible from above, but rather from the side via a small entrance point. In this case, access in and out of the work area can be very difficult and in the case of rescue, such an operation presents many challenges. Carrying out operations in confined spaces such as manholes, sewers, water treatment works, storm drains, vessels and silos present a significant challenge for the safety of the worker and those planning and supervising the work. Very often suitable access and anchor points are not available and transportable systems are required. MultiACCESS II offers a unique solution for a variety of work situations by incorporating: 1. A tripod for positioning over the access point to the workplace 2. Handrails fixed to the tripod to assist the worker when gaining access in and out of the access point to the workplace (patent pending) 3. The Liftevac device to lower and raise the worker in and out of the workplace and r ecover them efficiently and effectively in case of an emergency. From the tripod leg a rescue speed of 5m/min can be achieved. 4. Protection against a slip or fall can be offered by the use of an additional fall protection device such as a retractable fall arrest device if required Where a fixed anchor point exists over head, the Liftevac System can be used in conjunction with the Mono-leg A 130 System. PEOPLES SAFETY LTD MultiAccess III offers an optimum solution by providing a side mounted anchor point combined with an access and rescue chute. In this way an injured or unconscious worker can be retrieved from inside the work area without the need to send in and put at risk additional personnel. The combination of the anchor point, LiftEvac and evacuation chute allows the rescuer to get the casualty out of the confined space without causing injury when hauling them around the sharp angles of the opening. Once on the evacuation chute, the casualty can be moved with the benefit of full body support. (In order for the MultiAccess III to be effective, the worker must be attached to the Liftevac system at all times.) For further details, including a copy of a video showing this product in use, please contact Uniline Safety Systems. Available for 500mm and 600mm tank openings as standard. Pricing for MultiAccess Work Kits is available on request. Products are available to view and try out at Uniline s Head Office or at certain distributors training facilities. Demonstrations can also be arranged at customers own facilities under controlled conditions. Please contact us for further details. 09

Training Carrying out a rescue of a fellow worker or stranded casualty, or self-evacuation from a dangerous situation is quite a responsibility. It is therefore imperative that such tasks should only be undertaken by trained and competent people. Uniline and its network of specialist distributors and service providers in more than 22 countries, are able to deliver full package solutions for people working at height, including in many cases provision of specialist access and rescue training in controlled environments. Uniline also have many contacts for specialist training providers for highly complex and technical rescue, in areas such as power distribution and wind energy. Training teams can be mobilised to deliver training in many countries, where specialist training provision is not available. For more details and to discuss your specific requirements, please contact Uniline. 019 Equipment Maintenance Your rescue equipment needs to be maintained and kept in good working order. Uniline and many of its partners are able to provide maintenance and service of your rescue devices. The general rules for equipment servicing are as follows: 1 User 150kg 5000 descent metres or at twelve month intervals 1 User 100kg 7500 descent metres or at twelve month intervals 1 User 75kg 10,000 descent metres or at twelve month intervals If two persons descend simultaneously, a maximum of 320 descent metres is permissible. As rescues come about as the result of unplanned events, immediate and effective response is required. Whilst you cannot predict what may happen when work at height is being carried, you can plan to ensure your equipment is ready for use. This will reduce risks for the casualty and the rescuer.
