Austin defeated ULM 7-1 the last time the two teams met Feb. 25, 2011 at the Northwestern State Invitational in Natchitoches. The Warhawks won their second consecutive weekend series to open the season with Sunday s 8-6 win over Sam Houston State. Pitcher Wil Browning earned his first win since March 22, 2011 against No. 25 Southern Mississippi after throwing three innings of relief in the series finale. Browning missed the final two months of last season due to injury. Judd Edwards broke an early season slump in the Sam Houston State series, batting.375 with a home run, two RBIs and four runs scored. He drew a careerhigh four walks Friday night against the Bearkats. Joey Rapp saw his season-opening five-game hit streak come to an end in Friday s contest. Rapp added a base hit in each of the final two games of the series. The 6-4 first baseman has reached base in all eight Warhawk games. Along with Rapp, Les Aulds has also reached safely in his first eight starts for ULM in 2012. Aulds is getting on base at a.353 clip. Through eight games, ULM holds the edge over the opposition in runs scored (42-35), RBIs (37-29), extra base hits (17-11), on-base percentage (.348-.332) and stolen bases (17-6). The Warhawk pitching staff has posted a 3.52 ERA to open the season, the fourth-best total in the Sun Belt Conference. Starter Randy Zeigler is tied for the conference lead in strikeouts with FAU s Ryan Garton. Relief pitcher Shelby Aulds has not allowed an earned run in his first three appearances of 2012. The junior right-hander has thrown 12.0 innings of shutout baseball, walking three and striking out eight. Aulds is tied for the low ERA lead in the SBC with five other pitchers. 1 ULM vs. Stephen F. ULM Rolling To Start Season Sunday s series clincher over Sam Houston State moved ULM to 6-2 to begin the season, the best start by a Warhawks squad since the 2009 team began the year 6-1. ULM has won both of its weekend series matchup (2-1 over both Texas-San Antonio and Sam Houston State) as well as both midweek games at Warhawk Field against Tulane and Southern Miss. The 6-2 start marks the third time in his six years that head coach Jeff Schexnaider s teams have won six of the first eight games, having accomplished the feat in his first season at the helm in 2007 as well as 2009. Warhawks Earn National Recognition ULM moved into the No. 10 slot on the College Baseball Lineup (formerly Ping!Baseball) Top-Ten Mid Major Rankings this week. The Warhawks leapt over Georgia Southern, Jacksonville and Sun Belt foe Troy into the rankings. ULM also received votes in this past week s NCBWA Division I Poll. The Warhawks, FAU and FIU represented the Sun Belt in the receiving votes category. Finding Ways To Manufacture Runs Despite recording only 13 team hits in the series against Sam Houston State, the Warhawks managed to score 11 runs and win two of the three games. ULM hitters drew 13 walks and were hit by three pitches. The Warhawks were also active once they reached the base paths, successfully stealing eight bases in 11 attempts. Zeigler Shuts The Door In Friday Win After being saddled with the loss in the seasonopener Feb. 18 at Texas-San Antonio, left-hander Randy Zeigler bounced back with a strong performance in ULM s 2-0 win in game one of the weekend series against Sam Houston State. The 6-1 junior threw seven full innings of shutout baseball, allowing three hits to Bearkat batters. He walked just one and struck out eight hitters on 107 pitches to earn the win. Zeigler, Kendall Thamm and Wil Browning combined to throw a four-hit shutout. Edwards Hits His Stride A slow start in the first five games of 2012 did not derail Judd Edwards. The junior was the key offensive piece in ULM s weekend win over Sam Houston State. The 6-0 third baseman batted a team-high.375 during the three-game set, smashing one home run with two RBIs, four walks drawn, a stolen base and four runs scored. TEAM SPLITS ULM... Stephen F. The Warhawks have not only attempted a Sun Belt Conference-high 26 steals, but have successfully swiped 17 bags. Les Aulds is tied with UL-Lafayette s Brian Bowman for the conference lead in steals with five as of Feb. 28. Caleb Clowers is alone in third place with four stolen bases in his six attempts. Thamm And Aulds Anchoring The Pen Relief pitchers Kendall Thamm and Les Aulds have been shut down performers out of the ULM bullpen early in 2012, having a direct hand in three of the six Warhawk wins to date. Thamm has punched out 12 batters through 8.2 innings, allowing one earned run. Opponents are.226 against the senior left-hander, and Thamm has recorded one win and one save. Aulds has not allowed a run in his 12 full innings pitched, walking three batters and striking out eight over three appearances. He was the winning pitcher after throwing 5.2 frames of one-hit relief against Tulane. ULM In Control Of All-Time Series ULM leads the all-time series against Stephen F. Austin 35-17 despite dropping the most recent meeting between the two clubs 7-1 Feb. 25, 2011. The Warhawks have not lost in Nacogdoches since dropping a two-game series to the Lumberjacks 12-11 and 7-5 March 25 and 26, 2008. Shake Against Stephen F. Austin Head coach Jeff Schexnaider is an even 4-4 in eight prior meetings with Stephen F. Austin, including a 1-2 mark in games played in Nacogdoches. Despite losing to Stephen F. Austin at the Northwestern State Invitational in 2011, the Warhawks downed the Lumberjacks 10-9 the last time they traveled to Stephen F. Austin. Matt Laird smashed a three-run home run to left field in the top of the first inning to give the Warhawks an early 3-0 advantage over the Lumberjacks. Jordy Poche added a solo homer as the next man up against Stephen F. Austin starter Tyler Herriage, opening a 4-0 lead that ULM would not relinquish. The Pros Are Already Watching Three ULM players have previously been chosen in the MLB First-Year Player Draft. Newcomers Brandon Alexander (29th Round, 2009-Baltimore Orioles) and Alex Hermeling (43rd Round, 2011-Los Angeles Dodgers), and 2011 All-Sun Belt first teamer Joey Rapp (41st Round, 2009-Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim; 28th Round, 2010-Washington Nationals) were drafted by Major League Baseball clubs but elected not to sign. Broadcast Information Warhawk games this season will regularly be broadcast live on 540 AM in Northeast Louisiana and worldwide on ulmwarhawks.com. Bruce Hanks returns for his eighth season as the Voice of the Warhawks, with ESPN 97.7 FM s Nick White calling select games. Warhawks All*Access returns for its fourth year and fans will be able to watch all 30 of ULM s home games and select road games live on ulmwarhawks.com. Keeping The Local Flavor Head coach Jeff Schexnaider hasn t ventured far to find a lot of the talent on the Warhawk roster. Nine players on the 33-man roster are from the Monroe- West Monroe area. Warhawks to Watch >>>> Shake Reaches 140 Wins ULM head coach Jeff Schexnaider became the fifth head coach to surpass 140 career wins against Southern Miss. The sixth-year skipper of the Warhawks and 2008 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year entered 2012 with 136 career victories. Lou St. Amant has the most career coaching victories with 414, while Smoke Laval has the highest winning percentage at.603 (241-159). Coach Shake needs 9 more victories to pass Brad Holland for fourth on the all-time Warhawk wins list. ULM All-Time Coaching Wins 1. Lou St. Amant (1976-93) 414 2. Smoke Laval (1994-00) 241 3. The Warhawks have 16 players on the 33-man roster that spent time playing at a junior college. Pitcher Andrew Richardson transferred from four-year New Orleans. New Bats Impacting Offense With the introduction of a new metal bat design just prior to the 2011 baseball season, many predicted that offensive totals in college baseball would be affected. Last season, the wood-like bats made their impact on the ULM offense. Schexnaider, the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, guided the Warhawks to a Sun Belt regular season conference championship in just his second season. He followed that success by leading the Warhawks to the 2009 Sun Belt Tournament Championship Game. ULM s march to the title game featured an elimination game against third-seed and host Troy and two elimination games against regular season cochampion Western Kentucky. Those two accomplishments are elevated by the fact that the Sun Belt consistently ranks among the top seven conferences in the NCAA based on RPI. Schexnaider has amassed a 142-149 record in his five plus seasons on the Bayou. During his five seasons as ULM s skipper, the Warhawks have posted the three highest home run totals in school history. In fact, ULM combined for more home runs in 2008 and 2009 (178) than it did in the four seasons (2003-06 - 153 home runs) before Schexnaider took over the club. The Warhawks put together their most successful backto-back seasons since the 2000 and 2001 campaigns with a combined 66 victories in 2008 and 2009. Over the past three seasons the Warhawks have knocked off four ranked teams - all on the road - including a victory over No. 5 Arkansas in 2009. ULM became the first team to defeat Ole Miss on opening day since 1981 when it defeated the No. 17 Rebels 6-5 to open the 2010 season. ULM defeated a pair of teams that advanced to the 2009 College World Series - Arkansas and Southern Miss - and came within two extra-inning losses of sweeping their series against both schools. The offensive and defensive transformation under Schexnaider has been remarkable to say the least. ULM has posted the top two team batting averages, the top two hits totals, two of the top three runs scored totals, two of the top three doubles totals, the top two RBI totals, two of the top four fielding percentage totals and the top two double plays turned totals in school history. Under his guidance Ben Soignier became one of the best players in ULM history and one of the best players in the NCAA. Soignier, who is ULM s only three-time All-American, holds the ULM career records for at-bats, hits, doubles and total bases, while ranking second in runs scored, third in home runs, third in RBIs, fourth in stolen bases and 10th in saves. ULM has had a player earn All-America honors in each of the last three seasons under Schexnaider s guidance. Judd Edwards joined the list of elite players in Warhawk history in 2010 when Ping!Baseball tabbed him to their Freshman All- America squad. Two Warhawks have been selected in the Major League Baseball First Year Player s Draft in three of Schexnaider s four seasons as head coach. The 2009 Warhawks featured a trio of All-Sun Belt selections and Boomer Blanchard was named Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year. Blanchard tallied the second most hits in a single-season in ULM history in addition to scoring the third most runs and accumulating the seventh most total bases. ULM finished 18th in the country in double plays turned (64), 27th in runs scored (485), 29th in home runs (85), 33rd in slugging percentage (.519), 34th in hits (685) and 38th in batting average (.325). In 2008, the Schexnaider led Warhawks set school records in hits (697), doubles (139), home runs (93), RBIs (465), total bases (1,141) and double plays turned (76). Shake Year-by-Year Overall Pct.
