June 2017 SAFETY OFFICER S CORNER Keith Crabill We all got started in the hobby in different ways. I got my start in RC in the late 1980s with cars. I bought a Tamiya midnight pumpkin and a Futaba two channel AM radio. I loved it. I went through several cars and later got into on road racing. I moved to Manassas in the early 90s and found Hobby Hangar and their indoor carpet oval. I raced one season there before they moved to the current location and did away with the track. I talked to Kwan and asked him what was I going to do with the car I had recently bought from him for racing on the oval and he offered to trade me for a.40 size trainer outfit. I learned to fly, joined the FARM club for a short while and then life got in the way. I sold all of my RC airplanes in the late 1990s. A few years ago I decided to make time to start flying airplanes again and joined the FARM club. As well as airplanes, I still enjoy RC cars and trucks. I also have several RC boats, helicopters, and quadcopters. There are so many things to enjoy in our hobby. It is hard to choose just one. AMA Charter 1654 The hobby has changed quite a bit over the years. We now have brushless motors, lipo batteries and foam airplanes just to name a few. All of these have made a huge difference but the biggest change, for me, has been the Internet. When most of us started, all the information we received was from RCM magazine once a month or from the people we met who were kind enough to share their knowledge. Now, if you are building a new ARF and you want to see how someone else did it, chances are there is a YouTube video to show you how. If you need to learn how to properly charge your new lipo batteries, that information is on the World Wide Web as well. I was recently looking for an inexpensive airplane to try my hand at pattern flying. Of course, I turned to the Internet and found one on Facebook through the East Coast Pattern Association page. Through social media I have connected with modelers around the world with similar interests. The Internet is a great resource if we choose to use it. The one thing that remains the same as when I started is the willingness of fellow club members to help as well as the support that you get at your local hobby store. I would like to say a special thank you to all those who have helped me recently with my quest to try pattern flying. Without all the help from fellow club members and members of other clubs, I would not have been able to do it. On a closing note I would like to say what a pleasure it has been to meet the club members I have and I hope to meet the ones I have not. Remember before that first flight of the day to do a range check and give the aircraft a quick once over. The few minutes you spend doing this before the first flight of the day might just save your aircraft or someone else's property. Keith Crabill

We finished the pattern contest about $275 ahead. The money from the lunch benefitted the Szczurs about $100 - $150 for Joseph. Thanks to all who helped put the event on. About 12 flyers need to complete their solo flight. Personalized flying shirts are available from Nic Burhans. For both FARM and CMB July club meetings (outdoors), Don Szczur will coach your pattern flying maneuvers. EDITOR S NOTES Upcoming Events 1. Club Meeting, at Warrenton Community Center, 7:00 PM, 6/27/2017 2. Fun Fly #4, at the field (and AM Pilot Flight Check Day, 1:00 PM, 7/9/2017 3. Club Picnic & Float Fly #1, at Lake Ritchie, 9:00 AM, 6/24/2017 (our field closed to 72 Mhz; open to 2.4 Ghz), CD: Bill Towne SECRETARY S REPORT The May club meeting was held on May 23 at the Warrenton Community Center. Twelve members were present, including six of the club officers. There was no old business. Dick Sutton offered one item of new business. Security certificates for the FARM and CMB web sites were renewed. Eventually, we will be forced to upgrade to secure site access (htpps instead of http). Dick spent two days migrating our sites to new servers brought up by the web provider. Thanks Dick. Next month at the club meeting, Charlie Koustenis will address and demonstrate engine tuning. Officer Reports Bill Towne (Vice President) noted that volunteers are needed for the upcoming float fly. The fees are: $20 to fly and get lunch included, or $5 for lunch without flying. Ernie Padgette will give us his tips and tricks each month. He will also give us a list of items for sale with prices. Board of Directors Items We discussed the idea of making a designation for Pete Rawlings as the father of FARM. We had a reply from Phil Coopy on his recollections on the early years of FARM. We are on hold with this action. We discussed and approved an action to make the free FARM hat to no longer be free. This would begin next year. FARM is a 501(c)3 organization and as such may receive donations if you are so inclined. Ernie Padgette will address member of the year plaque criteria and procedures. 50/50 Dwayne Beck won the money and donated it back to the club.
