After a two-week break from competition, the No. 10 Nebraska men s gymnastics team returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 30, at Minneapolis, Minn., against No. 8 Minnesota and No. 14 Air Force. The meet is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion. Live stats will be available on Minnesota s website (gophersports.com). The Huskers are 3-1 on the road this season, with a loss to Oklahoma and wins over Air Force, Arizona State and Washington. NU is eager to be back in action this weekend, hoping to break a losing streak against Minnesota that dates back to the 2005 season. NU met up with the Golden Gophers twice in 2009 regular-season competition. The Huskers fell to Minnesota, 343.50-345.90, in Iowa City, Iowa, on Feb. 14, before the Golden Gophers defeated Nebraska, 353.30-349.40, in Lincoln on March 15. Air Force and Nebraska also competed against each other twice last season, as the Huskers swept the Falcons in both matchups. Huskers in the National Ranks Although Nebraska has not competed since its meet at the Rocky Mountain Open on Saturday, Jan. 16, the Huskers hold a 10th-place ranking in the latest GymInfo poll released on Monday, Jan. 25. The Golden Gophers started off the 2010 season with a fifth-place finish at the Windy City Classic on Jan. 16. Like NU, Air Force has only competed once this season at the Rocky Mountain Open on Jan. 16. Air Force freshman James Okamoto earned the Falcon s best finish at the RMO, earning fourth place on pommel horse with a score of 14.05. Okamoto recorded the second-best pommel horse score in Air Force history. Shanahan, Robinson Set to Compete in Winter Cup Challenge Senior all-arounders Kyle Shanahan and John Robinson were selected to compete at the Winter Cup Challenge on Feb. 4-6, in Las Vegas, Nev. The 2010 season marks the first time for both gymnasts to compete in the Winter Cup since the start of their college careers. Over 100 gymnasts were selected to compete at the two-day meet, including members of the current Senior National Team and Junior Elite National Team. Nebraska will be joined by 11 gymnasts from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The competition will be held at the Las Vegas Sports Center on Thursday, Feb. 4, with three sessions of preliminary competitions. The top-42 athletes from the first day preliminaries will advance to the finals, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6. Next Up For Nebraska While Shanahan and Robinson will travel to Las Vegas for the Winter Cup Challenge, the rest of the Nebraska team will have a two-week break following its meet against Minnesota and Air Force. The Huskers will take on Oklahoma for the second time in the 2010 season on Feb. 13, at Norman, Okla.

The Huskers earned a team score of 337.05, while third-ranked Oklahoma topped the standings with a score of 347.40 and No. 14 Air Force placed third with a 325.85. Club teams Arizona State (319.40) and Washington (277.95) placed fourth and fifth, respectively. As the first meet of the season, the Rocky Mountain Open serves as a benchmark for the Huskers to see how they have progressed from the previous season. Comparatively, NU scored nearly five points higher than the 2009 RMO, blasting last season s score of 332.40. While Ingrelli was the only Husker to top an event at the RMO, senior co-captain Kyle Shanahan placed within the top-three finishers in two events, including a second-place finish on parallel bars (14.65), a second-place finish on high bar (13.90). Newcomer Andreas Hofer earned a 13.85 on high bar for third place behind Shanahan on high bar. For the first time since the 2005 season, Nebraska competed three gymnasts in the all-around, including Shanahan, Hofer and senior John Robinson. Shanahan earned a third-place finish in the all-around (83.40). Robinson (83.35) and Hofer (81.20) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Nebraska came out swinging on high bar in the first rotation, notching a score of 54.90, which is more than three points higher than last year s RMO score of 51.45. The three all-arounders led the way on high bar, as Shanahan put up a 13.90 for second place. Hofer posted a 13.85 for third and Robinson scored a 13.80 for fourth. Junior Bear Danley rounded out the top-five high bar scores with a 13.35. The Huskers posted a score of 55.95 on floor exercise, again besting last season s RMO score of 52.60. Newcomer Michael Heredia s score of 13.45 started a string of outstanding performances for the Huskers, including a teambest 14.60 from Shanahan. Sophomore Josh Dilworth earned a 14.50, while Robinson earned a 13.40. Suffering the loss of last year s seniors and pommel horse specialists T.J. Schmidt and James Mauldin, Nebraska struggled on pommel horse in the third rotation. Several falls caused the team to put up a score of 51.35, one of the worst scores on the event in two seasons. Senior Josh Rusler stepped up for the Huskers, scoring a team-high 13.00. Robinson followed close behind Rusler with a 12.90, while Hofer posted a 12.85. Sophomore David Jacobs opened his collegiate career on pommel horse with a score of 12.60, while Danley posted a matching 12.60. Despite a tough go on pommel horse, NU gained momentum in the fourth rotation on still rings, historically one of NU s best events. The team held true to tradition, posting a solid score of 56.40, as still rings specialist Ingrelli earned a team-high score of 14.65 for first place. Robinson put up a score of 14.05, while Hofer earned a 13.90 and Maras notched a 13.80. The Huskers maintained intensity, as junior Cory Baumgarten opened a strong vaulting night for the team with a career-high score of 15.60, besting his former career-high by two-tenths of a point. Heredia notched a huge score of 15.70, while Robinson earned a team-high 15.75. The Huskers earned a score of 62.10 on vault, blasting last year s Rocky Mountain Open score of 59.50. Nebraska wrapped up the RMO with a strong finish on parallel bars with a score 56.35, again bettering last season s RMO score of 55.15. Shanahan s score of 14.65 was his best parallel bars score since the 2008 season, while senior Tony Maras earned a career-high score of 13.25. 2010 Season Statistics Cory Baumgarten at RMO --- --- 12.85 15.60 --- --- --- Bear Danley at RMO --- 12.60 --- --- 13.75 13.35 --- Josh Dilworth at RMO 14.50 --- --- 15.05 --- 12.90 --- Michael Heredia at RMO 13.45 --- --- 15.70 --- --- --- Andreas Hofer at RMO 11.35 12.85 13.90 14.75 14.50 13.85 81.20 Anthony Ingrelli at RMO --- --- 14.65 --- --- --- --- Tony Maras at RMO 12.80 --- 13.80 --- 13.25 --- --- John Robinson at RMO 13.40 12.90 14.05 15.75 13.45 13.80 83.35 Josh Rusler at RMO --- 13.00 --- --- --- 12.50 --- Kyle Shanahan at RMO 14.60 12.40 13.75 14.10 14.65 13.90 83.40 Stefan Wallof at RMO --- --- --- --- 12.20 --- --- David Jacobs at RMO --- 12.60 --- --- --- --- ---

2010 Nebraska Gymnastics Huskers Begin New Era Under Chmelka Under Head Coach Chuck Chmelka and assistant coaches Jim Hartung and Phil Cahoy, Sr., the Nebraska men s gymnastics program embarks on a new era as it enters the 2010 season. After long-time Husker coaching legend Francis Allen retired at the end of last season, Chmelka immediately began preparing Nebraska to be a national powerhouse once again. Chmelka s top priority and coaching philosophy is to make the NU gymnasts practice with greater intensity and focus than ever before. With the right preparation in practice, Chmelka believes the team will see results in competitions. I always have people asking me what place we want to get or if we re going to get in the top-three, Chmelka said. But I try not to get caught up in that. If we just hit all of our routines and we are clean and we get 10th place, but do as good as we can, then I am fine with that. I feel like if we do that, then we re going to be way up there in the rankings because we haven t done that in a long, long time. Another major goal Chmelka has made for the season is to get more fans to become interested in Nebraska gymnastics. Fan support will be essential this season as NU works to rebuild its program. We have a really good product out there, Chmelka said. It s exciting. You have to get by the 10.0 thing. It s gone, and it s not coming back. But you ll learn what a score is. A 15.0 is a great score now. These guys are doing hard, hard skills - all kinds of flips and twists and stuff. It should be real fun and exciting. I think if people would just try it again, they would like it. The gymnastics booster club and (women s coach) Dan Kendig and I are trying lots of things to get more fans again. I hope it pays off. Fans will not only get the opportunity to watch the Huskers compete against conference opponents Air Force and Oklahoma, but also Big Ten forces Ohio State, Iowa and Minnesota. Typically, the Huskers compete on Sunday afternoons. However, NU competes against Iowa and Minnesota on Saturday, March 20, at 7 p.m. to accomodate more fans. Roster Review This season, Nebraska has the potential to rotate three gymnasts in the all-around position, including seniors Kyle Shanahan and John Robinson and newcomer Andreas Hofer. In addition to NU s top all-arounders, Nebraska s solid returning roster includes Tony Maras, Josh Rusler, Daniel Brûlé, Anthony Ingrelli, Cory Baumgarten, Bear Danley and Josh Dilworth. Seven new faces also joined the Husker team this season, including Mark Ringle, Gabriel Sánchez, Michael Heredia, Andreas Hofer, Wyatt Baier and Ben Hall. With 23 gymnasts on the roster, including eight senior leaders and 11 returning lettermen, Nebraska will have the experience necessary to put the Husker gymnastics program back on the map. Senior Leaders Nebraska returns eight seniors to the lineup this season, including co-captains Maras and Shanahan, along with Rusler, Robinson, Brûlé, Stefan Wallof, Adrion Hernandez and Bo Benak. I feel so fortunate to have been able to step into this role with these seniors, Chmelka said. They ve totally bought into what we re trying to do and they re doing it by example, not by talking about it. They re doing it by working hard and doing everything that we ask of them. Although Shanahan and Maras are the official co-captains, Chmelka believes all eight seniors bring a sense of urgency to the team. Tony and Kyle are doing a great job, but every senior has his little niche that he does, Chmelka said. Even though not all eight could be a co-captain, they kind of are really. We just couldn t have eight co-captains, so we had to do something. Each one does his own thing to help the program, no doubt about it. And they re going to be missed next season. Juniors Two juniors add more experience to the Husker lineup this season, including still rings specialist Anthony Ingrelli and Bear Danley, who competes on four events. Both Danley and Ingrelli have been consistent competitors for NU since their freshmen seasons. Both made NCAA appearances in 2008 and 2009, and the pair has gained poise and maturity on the floor. Chmelka has put high expectations on both Ingrelli and Danley. We want Anthony to bust through and get in the top-eight on rings, Chmelka said. Just with a little better technique on a dismount we ve been working on all summer, hopefully that ll be there and he ll be an All-American this year. He should be and he could be. He has all of the tools for it. While Ingrelli works on his dismount, Danley will work to push through a preseason elbow injury and overcome inconsistencies in his routines. Bear is going to be a lot better than he was last year, Chmelka said. He s a very talented gymnast and he ll be a great asset to us this season. Sophomores Seven sophomores, including lettermen Cory Baumgarten and Josh Dilworth, will make an impact on the 2010 team. Baumgarten and Dilworth appeared in nearly every competition last season, including the 2009 NCAA Championships, Dilworth advanced to the NCAA event qualifiers on both floor exercise and vault. Transfers David Jacobs and Michael Heredia are also expected to compete immediately for the Huskers in the 2010 campaign. Chmelka looks for Jacobs to help on pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar, while Heredia will compete on floor, pommel horse, vault and high bar. Michael Killeen, Chris Damian and Matthew Forrest sat out last season to gain experience and consistency on their events. With continued training, all three Huskers could compete on their events this season. Freshmen Nebraska boasts an impressive fivemember freshman class this season, including German National Team member Andreas Hofer, Arizona flipper Gabriel Sánchez, California gymnast Mark Ringle, Iowa native Ben Hall and Colorado product Wyatt Baier. Chmelka hopes the newcomers bring a fresh look to the 2010 team. Our newcomers bring new blood to the team, Chmelka said. They re a fun group of gymnasts and they re exciting and work hard. They re doing exactly what we re asking. We don t have to worry about these guys working hard. They have that focus on how they want to get better, and every day they come in and do what they need to do. Sometimes, we have to say slow up a little bit, which is kind of rare for us. It s nice. They re doing great. 2010 Schedule The Huskers will host three home meets this season, including a quad against Ohio State, Air Force and UIC on Feb. 21, a dual against Oklahoma on March 7 and a triangular against Iowa and Minnesota on March 20. This season marks the first time since 2008 that the Huskers have hosted a Saturday night meet. Chuck Chmelka enters his first season as Nebraska s head coach, replacing his longtime mentor Francis Allen.
