County Fair & Rodeo Grand Marshal Veterans of the Los Alamos (AFDB-7) These veterans represent both the history of Los Alamos and its long-standing relationship with the U.S. Navy... The Los Alamos was a floating dry-dock that was deployed at Holy Loch, Scotland in 1961 as part of a maintenance facility for the Navy s then-new force of fleet ballistic missile submarines. She was kept at Holy Loch for more than three decades as an important part of the Nation s strategic retaliatory force. This first reunion for the veterans of the Los Alamos is made more special by being held in Los Alamos. They also represent the future, with the drive to name the Navy s next Virginia class submarine the USS Los Alamos. All five members of New Mexico s congressional delegation asked Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer to name the next Virginia class fast-attack submarine USS Los Alamos in recognition of the contributions the city and its National Laboratory have made to the United States Navy. The effort to honor the National Laboratory responsible for the beginning of the nuclear age is a citizen-based initiative, and we hope their efforts to honor the men and women of the community and the Laboratory will come to fruition, the letter said, This year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of Los Alamos National Laboratory, and it is clear that the work of the men and women of Los Alamos has helped make the United States Navy the strongest in the world today.
