C Draper, Lyman Copeland, Collection, 1735-1815 2964 136 rolls of microfilm RESTRICTED MICROFILM This collection is available at The State Historical Society of Missouri. If you would like more information, please contact us at shsresearch@umsystem.edu. INTRODUCTION Microfilm copy of the Draper Collection of manuscripts. Originals located at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. DONOR INFORMATION The collection was purchased by the State Historical Society of Missouri (Accession No. 888). RESTRICTIONS Originals are located at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Madison, WI. Citations to collection should credit the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH For an account of Draper s life and methods, consult Wisconsin Historical Collections, 1 (reprint), pp. 9-29. Copied from Descriptive List of Manuscript Collections of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, edited by Reuben Gold Thwaites, 1906. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The Lyman C. Draper manuscript collection consists of 469 folio volumes. The geographical field covered is from the Hudson River to the Mississippi, from Charleston to Louisville, and the period from the year 1735 until the close of the war of 1812-1815; with some material bearing upon the trans-mississippi region such as certain papers of William Clark and the journal of Sergeant Charles Floyd (Lewis and Clark expedition). The classification is chiefly under the names of important border heroes or pioneers, for Draper collected with a view of using the material for a series of biographies; George M. Bedinger, Daniel Boone, Samuel Brady, Joseph Brant, etc. There are six volumes of data relative to the Mecklenburg declaration of independence; others contain early manuscripts relative to Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and King s Mountain; numerous volumes are devoted to Draper s interviews with pioneers or their descendants in many parts of the border states and the Middle West. It should be explained that but a small part of the Draper Manuscripts are contemporary documents; much of the larger portion consists of Draper s interviews and correspondence while seeking information, all of which is freely interspersed with his critical comments and notes. The microfilm is arranged by series number, then by volume number. For use, the researcher is directed to the index and calendar volumes located at the beginning of the collection.

C2964 Draper, Lyman Copeland, Collection, 1735-1815 Page 2 INDEX--1 VOLUME This book is a general index guiding the researcher to names and content of manuscripts and papers in the Draper Collection. The contents note lists titles of manuscripts and each one s corresponding series letter: A-Z, AA-ZZ. Following this is a description of each set of manuscripts, with biographical sketches and a summary of the content of each volume in that series. To use the microfilm, the researcher must get the series letter and volume number from this index. A list of manuscripts within the Draper Collection follows, taken from the contents note. CALENDARS--3 VOLUMES The State Historical Society of Missouri reference collection has calendars of five sets of manuscripts in the Draper Collection, located in the research center stacks: vol. 1 The Kentucky Manuscript, CC [SHS REF 976.9 W753] vol. 2 The Tennessee, XX, and Kings Mountain, DD, Papers. [SHS REF 975.5 W75] vol. 3 The Preston, QQ, and Virginia, ZZ, Papers [SHS REF 976.8 W753] The calendars describe each item within the papers. The descriptions are arranged in chronological order and are accompanied by a number which guides the researcher to the microfilm. Example: 16CC334. 16 is the volume number CC is the series number, indicating the Kentucky MSS in this case 334 is the item, folio, or page number within the volume. LIST OF MANUSCRIPTS A.
