~~~~Bluewater Bulletin~~~~ www.sandiegorodandreel.com February, 2018 San Diego Rod and Reel Club (760) 533-6920 Club Meeting February 1 st, 2018 At Silvergate Yacht Club Speaker: Fisherman s Belly Happy Hour at 6:30 Meeting begins at 7:00 to sign up this month and next month, we are asking that you sign up for times and provide your t-shirt size as well. Till next month, Tom760-533-6920 Tomg4fishin@cox.net Picture of the Month Hello FCMs, VP Bill Renick Hello FCM s, President Tom Gruber Here we are starting February 2018 and there are still lots of fish being caught; Yellowtail, Sculpin and yes there are still Tuna. Rock Cod is closed until March 1st. The club awards banquet is on February 25th at Admiral Baker Clubhouse. We are still looking for people for the board. I know you are tired of me asking, but this is the only way your board can continue is with your help. This month s meeting will be at Silver Gate Yacht Club and our guest speaker is Yanni Hassir from Fisherman s Belly. Yanni will be speaking about what items you should have in your pantry. Day at the Docks will be on April 15th. We need volunteers to help man the kids fishing pens and the booth. Volunteers need Macy Mooradian, with her rockfish and halibut. She also had a Sand Bass to turn in a weight receipt for definitely a great day of fishing with Dad. WTG Macy! Now let s see you in the tournaments next year! The next event (kids trout fishing) on our calendar is the Youth Fishing Derby in Poway. You can camp out overnight with the kids (Feb 2) or just represent the club as we cook hot dogs for all on Feb 3. If you are up for this, camping is just $15 per car and includes fishing/rigging demonstrations and pizza dinner. Or just come to help on Saturday morning at 8:30 or 9:00. We will be serving hot dogs at 10:45 and should be done by 12:30. Stick around to see the winners and watch them get prizes. I am trying to put together a KIDS fishing trip in March. It will be with the Captain Rollo organization on a commercial boat. If you are interested in helping on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, contact me at the club website or just say HI! at the next meeting Please contact me if you have any suggestions or ideas for future club events! Bill Renick 1
Weigh Master Curt Itogawa Wow, it is February and that means Award time. I tallied weight slips and ordered the awards. Check the latest Weight Receipt List in this Newsletter. If you see your name on the list, be sure to attend the Club s banquet at the end of the month to receive your award. Everyone else come for all the fun and raffle items. The Club meeting is February 1st and you need to purchase your banquet tickets in advance. Read more about the banquet in this newsletter. Don t forget Saturday, February 3rd will be Capt. Ron Barker s last Lake Poway Kids Fishing Derby. He started this event over twenty years ago and our club has been helping for almost as long. He is retiring from this program, but enlisted a new leader starting next year. So, we will need a lot of help at this year s event to make sure his last one goes off without a hitch. It is really a fun event. So, until the next weigh-in, have fun and stay safe. Curtis Itogawa Clothing Master Tony Belandres SPECIAL DISCOUNT ON EMBROIDERY In early January, three lucky anglers sat down to peruse our huge clothing catalog, choosing the jackets they wanted embroidered for their prizes as Junior Angler, Sportsman, and Woman Angler of the Year. It took a while because there are a lot of nice things to choose from in this 817-page catalog. Thank goodness they were only looking through the jacket section! Their jackets will be presented at the awards banquet on Feb. 25th. They re already ordered and have arrived, but we ve put a hold on them. A number of people have expressed interest in ordering embroidered items, so if we have a big enough order, we get an exceptional discount. Items chosen at our February 1st meeting can be added to our current order, be delivered, and get embroidered all at once while the machines are set up. You, too can check out the catalog, choose whatever tickles your fancy, and benefit from this rare discount. Your item will also be ready in time for the banquet; there just won t be a fancy presentation for you at the podium. There s always next year, so start fishing now!! Tony: 619-300-1857 thebigkatuna@cox.net, Mary: 619-850-9476 lamer2@cox.net, Home: 619-469-4876 Hello FCM'S, Raffle Master Ellie Duchene Happy 2018 to everyone and hope the New Year brings you all good health, happiness, tight lines and great fishing. The club raffle will continue to have quality tackle and trips, and we still will be doing the target opportunity items. We still have jewelry for the ladies and we will make the jewelry target items as well. Janet will be making her amazing baskets for the awards banquet at Admiral Baker, so please plan on attending. It will be a fun time for all club members and a time to honor club winners. Hope to see you at the February club meeting and also at the awards banquet. February is a very busy month for your club. Till then, Roll the Barrel! Love, Ellie 2
Membership By Rhonda Gruber Greetings FCM s, This month speaker is one of our true favorites. Yanni from Fisherman's Belly is going to be joining us again. This month he will be talking to us about What is in our Pantry. Fisherman s Belly is the brainchild of Yanni Hassir, a SoCal waterman whose passion extends from the ocean to his kitchen. FishermansBelly.com offers a growing list of seasonal SoCal sport fish recipes. There are tips and tricks for cooking yellowtail, rockfish, white seabass, halibut, lobster, tuna, trout, and more. Every recipe is easy to follow and made from everyday ingredients packed with flavor. In addition, enjoy Yanni and his buddies' SoCal fishing adventures. As a full blooded Greek, Yanni's thirst for the sea and its bounty can be attributed to his ancient fish-eating ancestors. Yanni learned to cook from his mother who was a sous chef at the King's Palace in Greece. Yanni uses big flavors, imagination, and his latest catch to please his family, friends, and, of course, his own belly. Till next month, Rhonda Gruber 619-829-5146 Editor Gary Mouritzen GarysHomeLoans@hotmail.com 619-571-8787 Hello Fellow FCM s, I am very excited to see how this season plays out. We ended the year with a wide open Yellowtail bite and now we have a great bite on Sand Bass locally. Catalina has Lobster, Big Yellowtail, White Sea Bass and Halibut. Regarding the Awards Banquet, we had a great time last year at Admiral Baker with some really good food. It was a lot of fun and great camaraderie. Even if you re not getting an award, come and hang out with us. We will also have a great raffle! I know Tom has been bugging about getting on the board. As a past Big Fish Tournament Director, I would highly recommend getting on the board. It s a lot of fun and an overall great experience. You learn a lot more about fishing and you make a lot more friends by being involved with the board. I encourage you to step up and help continue making our club the best in San Diego. Some of the board positions really are not that difficult, so don t be afraid of any major challenges, because there aren t any! So, talk to Tom, Rhonda or myself and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Fishing Class I heard about my two older boys school having a class on fishing for the month of January, so I reached out to the teacher and offered to speak to their students about the San Diego Rod and Reel Club, as well as giving them some pointers on fishing; such as line, hooks, weights, knots, lures, jigs and different rigging techniques I use. These kids were like sponges, taking it all in and engaged for a whole hour! It also helped to have some freebies to hand out!! The kids are the future of our industry and hopefully some of them will consider joining the club! If you ever find the opportunity to do the same, do it. It was a great experience & hope to do it again. Now, Get Bent! Gary 3
