1 Title 2 Code C10111 3 Level 4 4 Value 3 credits 5 Purpose This module is designed to introduce the learner to the principles of working with horses. It will encourage the learner to acquire the basic knowledge and develop the basic skills associated with the care and maintenance of horses. 6 Preferred Entry Level Level 3 Certificate, or equivalent. 7 Special Requirements None. 8 General Aims Candidates who successfully complete this module will: 8.1 acquire an understanding of the behaviour of horses 8.2 perform a range of practical skills in the handling of horses 8.3 develop safe working practices when working with horses 8.4 acquire the basic skills to carry out daily stable and yard tasks 8.5 acquire basic knowledge and skills required for the care and feeding of horses 8.6 be familiar with tack and rugs used on horses 8.7 tack up a horse. 1
9 Units Specific learning outcomes are grouped as ten units 1 Safety and Health 2 Handling 3 Bedding 4 Watering and Feeding 5 Grooming 6 Rugging 7 Saddlery 8 Horse Health 9 Shoeing 10 Grass-kept Horse 10 Specific Learning Outcomes Unit 1 Safety and Health The learner should be able to: 1.1 use appropriate dress and protective gear when working with horses 1.2 list potential hazards associated with being in close proximity to horses 1.3 demonstrate appropriate precautions to be taken when in close proximity to horses 1.4 recognise situations with horses where occupational diseases are hazards 1.5 investigate insurance cover for own situation 1.6 state expected behaviour for a range of conditions in stabled and grass-kept horses 1.7 state expected reactions by horses to a range of situations 1.8 devise a plan to control vermin a stable, yard and storage areas 1.9 identify potential fire hazards about a yard 1.10 follow correct procedures when lifting a weight 1.11 store yard equipment 1.12 report an accident and complete an accident report sheet. 2
Unit 2 Handling The learner should be able to: 2.1 approach a horse in a stable and in a field 2.2 restrain a horse 2.3 fit a halter/headcollar and lead rope to a horse 2.4 tie up a horse 2.5 lead a horse 2.6 let go a horse. Unit 3 Bedding The learner should be able to: 3.1 identify bedding materials suitable for use with a horse 3.2 muck out a stable 3.3 put down a bed 3.4 skip out a bed 3.5 state when to disinfect a stable 3.6 maintain a yard and associated storage areas on a daily basis. Unit 4 Watering and Feeding The learner should be able to: 4.1 state and justify the rules for watering a horse 4.2 water a horse 4.3 state advantages and disadvantages of different watering systems 4.4 identify foods, concentrates and roughage commonly fed to horses and discuss their suitability 4.5 categorise the different foods fed to horses, as follows: concentrates intermediate feed bulk feed 3
succulents supplements 4.6 explain the effects of each category of food on a horse 4.7 state and justify the rules for feeding a horse 4.8 prepare and present a range of foods suitable for feeding to horses, to include: boiled barley bran mash linseed soaked beet pulp sugar beet nuts 4.9 identify good, bad and acceptable hay 4.10 fill, weigh and tie up a hay net 4.11 outline different techniques of feeding roughage (hay, haylage) to stabled horses 4.12 specify when to feed concentrates and roughage to stabled horses 4.13 feed concentrates and roughage to stabled horses 4.14 list functions of the constituents of a diet 4.15 devise a feed chart for a horse in light work. Unit 5 Grooming The learner should be able to: 5.1 identify grooming equipment and state its use 5.2 groom a stabled horse, to include: quartering strapping set-fair 5.3 specify when to groom a grass-kept horse 5.4 groom a grass-kept horse 5.5 pick out a set of hooves 5.6 care for grooming equipment 4
5.7 justify the use of a tail bandage 5.8 fit a tail bandage. Unit 6 Rugging The learner should be able to: 6.1 identify different types of rugs, associated fittings and state their uses 6.2 carry out a rugging operation to include fitting: New Zealand rug Night rug 6.3 take care of rugs 6.4 locate pressure areas caused by ill-fitting rugs 6.5 thatch a wet horse. Unit 7 Saddlery The learner should be able to: 7.1 identify parts of a saddle and bridle and state their uses 7.2 fit a snaffle to include a martingale 7.3 identify and state the use of a cavesson nose band 7.4 identify and state the uses of running martingale standing martingale 7.5 identify the main types of girth and state their uses 7.6 check tack for safety 7.7 fit appropriate tack for riding 7.8 adjust tack for fitting and soundness 7.9 remove tack 7.10 prepare tack for storage. 5
Unit 8 Horse Health The learner should be able to: 8.1 classify horses and ponies according to height, type, breed 8.2 identify colours and markings on a horse 8.3 identify points of the horse 8.4 recognise when a horse is lame 8.5 indicate the position of the main organs of a horse 8.6 measure the height of a horse 8.7 outline the procedures for the basic nursing of a sick horse 8.8 list the signs of a healthy horse and state its current condition. Unit 9 Shoeing The learner should be able to: 9.1 name and identify the parts of a horse s foot 9.2 assess a foot for shoeing 9.3 specify when a horse needs shoeing 9.4 identify farrier s tools and state their functions 9.5 prepare and restrain a horse for a farrier. Unit 10 Grass-kept Horse The learner should be able to: 10.1 state the important characteristics of a grass sward 10.2 recognise the following poisonous plants: bracken, buttercup, deadly nightshade, foxglove, hemlock, horse tails, iris, laurel, ragwort, rhododendron, yew 10.3 discuss the dangers associated with ragwort 10.4 explain the term horse-sick field 10.5 recognise and refurbish a horse-sick field 6
10.6 describe how grassland is maintained for horses 10.7 carry out routine daily checks in a field for hazards 10.8 list and describe the symptoms of common ailments that affect a grass-kept horse, to include: cracked heels, flies, laminitis, lice, mud fever, rain rash, sweet itch, ticks 10.9 turn a horse out into a field 10.10 catch and bring a horse into a stable. 7
11 Assessment Summary Practical skills tests 70% Written Examination 30% Note A candidate must achieve at least a pass mark in each element of assessment to be credited with this module. 11.1 Technique Practical Skills Tests Mode Centre based with external moderation by FETAC. Weighting 70% Detail Components A candidate must achieve at least a pass mark in each of the practical skill tests. Weighting 30% Format Duration Details The examination will consist of 3 papers. 1 hour per paper Each paper will focus on the following units: paper units questions 1 1, 8, 10 10 2 4 10 3 5, 6, 7, 9 10 All questions on each paper carry equal marks. All questions must be attempted. 8
12 Performance Criteria 12.1 Practical Skill Tests The performance criteria for each practical skill test are detailed in the accompanying Individual Candidate ing Sheets C10111/MS1 C10111/MS10. Adherence to correct health and safety procedures, level of work efficiency and demonstration of good rapport with the animal should be considered an integral part of each practical skill test. 12.2 Written Examination A detailed marking scheme and outline solutions should be devised and made available to FETAC when required. 13 Grading Pass 50% - 64% Merit 65% - 79% Distinction 80% - 100% 9
