ALLEGAN COUNTY 4-H HORSEMASTER PROGRAM LEVEL FOUR Introduction: Upon completion of Level Three, you have gained more skill in your horsemanship. Your horse has gained also in his talents and is now able to make the smooth transitions it takes to compete and move to further levels of training. You have acquired a balance seat and have learned to use the aids to communicate with your horse, and he has responded and is listening for your subtle cues. You and your project animal will now take the knowledge you have learned and move to a higher level of training. You will now begin to work patterns and to polish you and your horse s ability to execute perfectly. GOALS & ACHIEVEMENTS Upon completion of Level Four, each 4-H Member will be able to: Pass a written test on the Horse Sense (Theory) & Unmounted sections with a minimum passing score of 85%. 1. Demonstrate simple construction of equipment.. Demonstrate more subtle uses of natural aids. 3. Ride the Western/English riding patterns. 4. Gain the knowledge to execute patterns. 5. Learn to execute flying lead changes. 6. Know leg conformation and faults. 7. Perform and complete the mounted riding test with a minimum passing score of 5 for each skill evaluated and an overall, minimum score of 75%. 8. Describe appropriate housing of animals, as in the basic construction of stalls, types and sizes, flooring types and their efficiencies. Also outdoor time, safe and fencing etc. 9. Give a demonstration at local, county or state level HORSE SENSE (THEORY) & UNMOUNTED INSTRUCTION Complete Feeding Chart and Maintenance Record (form enclosed). Complete Project Animal Activity Participation Log (form enclosed). Complete Personal Story (form enclosed). 1. Disassemble and reassemble a Western and English bridle and name all the parts. Describe and explain the use of: Running martingale, Standing martingale, Crupper 3. Pull and/or band/braid a mane and tail. 4. Have the knowledge of control with a chain shank. 5. Simple construction of equipment; make a temporary halter from a loose rope. 6. Leg conformation, defects and their effects on movement and soundness. 7. Learn proper saddle fit in conjunction with tack check. 8. Introduction to Bits and Biting: Leverage and direct pressure, Seven pressure points on the horse s head, Basic parts of the bit, Correct adjustment in a horse or pony s mouth, bitless bridles, Bosal, Mechanical hackamore, 9. Know normal Temperature, Pulse (heart rate) and Respiration (breathing) 10. Locate and be able to perform T.P.R. on a real horse 11. Capilliary refill time what is it, why is it important to know, how to check it on a real horse 1. Be able to estimate the weight of your horse without a weight tape or scale: Formula is HG x HG x BL / 330 HG = Heart Girth and BL = Body Length 13. 14. Know at least three different types of bedding, efficiency and their absorption values 15. Horse talk horse terms every 4-Her should know: a. ALLEGAN COUNTY 4-H HORSEMASTER PROGRAM UNMOUNTED SKILLS LEVEL FOUR Correctly demonstrate the following skills to a designated leader/resource person who will check off each skill and the date completed.
