Wilkins had a hand in all six King s touchdowns. Koa Wilkins involved in all six scores By Sam Roach Using both his arm and his legs, junior quarterback Koa Wilkins led the King s Knight s to a 42-14 win over Cedarcrest last Friday night at Woolsey Stadium. Starting from their own 35, in eight plays Wilkins and the Knights systematically marched down the field and took the lead 7-0 on a quarterback keeper from a yard out. Key plays in the drive were a pair of Wilkin s passes to Jake Welch. Midway through the same quarter, King s struck again, this time taking advantage of a bad snap on a Cedarcrest punt. Starting the drive on the Redwolves 20, on the second play Wilkins scampered into the end zone untouched on a 19 yard score. Later in the quarter, Wilkins would hook up with Corey Kispert for a third touchdown to give King s a 20-0 lead at the end of the first period. In the second quarter, Cedarcrest used a pair of big plays to cut the Knight s lead to six points. Starting on their own 32 yard line, Cedarcrest put together a nine play 68 yard scoring drive culminated by Alex Par- nell s 2 yard run into the end zone. The key play in the drive was a 36 yard pass from Adam Davenport to Jeffrey Heppner. On the next drive, Parnell struck again, this time on a 56 yard touchdown run. Cedarcrest would get no closer however. On their last drive in the 1st half, King s extended the lead to 26-14 when Wilkins hit Karl Sather on a short pass that Sather was able to turn into a 15 yard touchdown. In the third period, King s scored on another Cedarcrest miscue when, for the second time in the game, a Redwolves CEDARCREST 0 RUSHING FIRST DOWNS RYAN FRANSEN 5 SOLO TACKLES, 2 ASSISTS, 2 FUMBLE RECOVERIES JACKSON WHITAKER 3 SOLO TACKLES, snap on a punt went over the punter s head, this time resulting in a safety. Defensively, the Knights were led by Ryan Fransen who had five tackles and two fumble recoveries and linebackers Jackson Whitaker, Cooper Wright, Sather, and Keegan Na. With the victory King s conference record went to 1-0 and their overall record improved to 2-1. The Knight s next game will be this Friday at Lakewood. Kickoff is at 7:00

Inside the Huddle: Defense and Special Teams won the game By Sam Roach Friday night was a must win game for the Knights. The Knight s had dropped their first two games of the season - granted to two teams in higher classifications, but they had still lost them and going into conference play they were 0-2. A loss Friday would have put them at 0-3. Now, in terms of making the play-offs, mathematically that s not a crisis. However, in terms of the mental aspect of the game, the confidence and the momentum that plays such a huge role in high school athletics, it would have been a disaster. This game was huge and everyone knew it. Reflecting on this, before the game, Defensive Line Coach Cole Wilkins said, I want our defense to give up six points or less. Fate had called out the Knights and on Friday night, the Knights answered the call, especially winning on defense and special teams. Defensively, the Knight s shut down the Redwolves Wing T running attack holding Cedarcrest to only 121 yards of total offense, 22 total rushing yards, and zero rushing first downs for the entire game while forcing six punts. Especially significant in these statistics is that aside from one touchdown run for 56 yards, Cedarcrest had only one other run for more than five yards and ten tackles for loss. In addition to stifling the Redwolves offense, King s also forced three turnovers in the game, two fumble recoveries by Ryan Fransen and a pass interception by Chase Leland. This defensive performance produced a domino effect especially in the punting game Friday night. Of the six punts that Cedarcrest attempted, two snaps went over the punter s head resulting the first time in a short field that Knight s quarterback Koa Wilkins was able to turn into a touchdown, one of six he would be involved in and the second one resulted in a safety. King s special teams also contributed in other plays as well. In the first quarter Wilkins returned a punt 25 yards to give the Knights excellent field position that they were able into points. In the second quarter Fransen recovered a muffed punt deep in Cedarcrest territory as well. The most important special teams play however came at the end of the first quarter by sophomore kicker Jack Van Dyke. King s had just taken a 20-0 lead when Cedarcrest return man Sutton Clancy found a lane and was on his way to score when Van Dyke made a touchdown saving tackle. Although Cedarcrest would eventually score twice in the second quarter, King s defense was able to stall that drive and force another punt. In the end, the scoreboard read 42-14 and King s offense accounted for 40 of those points but it was the defense and the special teams that made it possible. Thanks to the defense, the offense started drives on the Cedarcrest side of the field most of the night. By the same token, thanks to the special teams, the defense enjoyed starting many series on the Cedarcrest side of the 35 yard line and thanks to that same defense, Cedarcrest was never able to get untracked offensively. In the end, in a must win game, defense and special teams got it done.
The EMAK Report: Down on the Farm: J.V. Knights lose at Cedarcrest by 7 By Sam Roach On Monday afternoon at Cedarcrest, the J.V. Knights came up short against Cedarcrest J.V. 14-7. King s took an early lead on Camden Hauck s 11 yard run in the first quarter. Cedarcrest tied the game in the second period and won the game in the fourth quarter with a 90 yard scoop of a fumble With the loss the J.V. Knights record is 1-2. The J.V. Knights next game will be next Monday at 5:30 vs Lakewood at Woolsey Stadium. The EMAK Report did not have a photographer at Cedarcrest on Monday however many junior varsity players were able to play on Friday in the varsity game. The EMAK Report: The Scouting Report Lakewood Cougars The Knight s next opponent is the Lakewood Cougars. Both teams come into this game with 1-2 records and 1-0 in the Cascade Conference. In addition, in preseason both teams played schools in higher classifications and both teams lost to Lynden. Offensively Lakewood likes to spread the field and run a creative mix of runs and passes. Defensively, Lakewood will run a 3-4 defense. Key players to watch for Lakewood are Blake Watts, QB, Sr.; Brett Bustad, DB/WR, Sr.; Alec Burbee, OL/DL, Sr.; Paulmer Gregory, DB/RB, Sr. Recently, with the exception of 2013, these games have tended to be high scoring shootouts and the deciding factor for the Cascade Conference Championship. King s has won four of the last five meetings between these two schools. 2013 Lakewood 17 King s 14 Photo by Sam Roach 2010 King s 46 Lakewood 43 2012 King s 55 Lakewood 42
