THE POSITION The City of Oakland is currently recruiting to fill part-time Water Safety Instructor/Competitive Swimming Coach vacancies at one of the aquatic facilities. Under general direction, incumbents perform a variety of duties at the City's pools including competitive swimming instruction, coordination of the Water Safety Instruction (WSI) program, and other aquatic activities and performs related duties as assigned. Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Competitive Swimming Coach Create lesson plans for team practices including the preparation of work-out schedules for all age and ability levels on the team Organize and attend all swim meets on Saturday mornings for the swim team including assigning swimmers events, organizing necessary drivers to and from the swim meet, prepare swimmers prior to swim events, and distribute awards following the swim meet Instruct and evaluate swim team members in important competitive swimming elements and techniques Act as a reference and role model for swim team members Complete all records and reports including accidents, control and discipline, time slips, and leaves of absence Assist in the recruitment and registration of patrons for swim classes and lessons Cultivate and maintain good public relations with parents, swimmers and the community Attend all coaches meetings and additional staff trainings as scheduled

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR /COMPETITIVE SWIMMING COACH, PT 2 Water Safety Instructor Ensure the safety and well-being of pool patrons Enforce all pool rules Prevent accidents and render first aid as necessary Give swimming lessons to all ages and ability levels Review, evaluate, and direct Water Safety Aides in the "Learn-to-swim" program Provide swimming instruction to participants as outlined by the American Red Cross Assist Pool Manager in the coordination and implementation of the Water Safety Instruction program Complete all records and reports including accidents, control and discipline, time slips, and leaves of absence Assume custodial duties as assigned Assist in the registration of patrons for swim classes and lessons Maintain good public relations with the community MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the following minimum qualifications is acceptable. Experience: One (1) year of aquatics experience. Previous experience as a swim coach or competitive swimmer is highly desirable. License: Successful incumbents in this position are expected to operate automotive vehicles in the performance of assigned duties. Due to the nature of the assignment and the hours worked, public transportation may not be a cost effective or efficient method for traveling to the various locations required. Individuals who are appointed to this position will be required to maintain a valid California Driver's License throughout the tenure of employment OR demonstrate the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as required in the performance of duties. Certificates: Candidates must possess current Red Cross certifications in Water Safety Instruction, CPR, Lifeguard Training, Life Guard Training/First Aid, Basic Life Support and all guidelines outlined in Title 22 of the state code. AED certification preferred. Additional qualifications such as ASCA level one certification or higher and American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches are highly desirable. Other Requirements: Candidates must be at least seventeen (17) years old by May 31, 2011 or older to apply. Work Permits: Minors will be subject to state guidelines and restrictions governing their employment while employed with the City of Oakland.
