United States Power Squadrons Ventura Sail and Power Squadron Volume 62 July 2018 Number 7 Cdr Steve Johnston, P Commander s Corner water in the harbor have been shut down. The harbor water has been described as brown. Other members and I keep our vessels there and I will keep you informed on this issue. Enjoy the summer months and be safe out on the water. Hello everyone. Summer has started. But with all this fog there is little opportunity to generate power with my solar panels. Others will report on the cruise to Santa Barbara - it was a great event. In this issue you will find an announcement for the District picnic on August 25. This event is well attended by long-term members. In fact if you are attending, let me know. One of our members, Donna Adriana, would like to attend. As she does not drive, she would appreciate catching a ride if you are attending. You may have noticed stories in the VC Star and Nextdoor.com about the water quality in Channel Islands Harbor. The power station has shut down and the pumps that circulate

Lt/C Dan Coverdale Executive Officer Those cardboard boxes that filled La Mouette as we moved our stuff aboard have now disappeared. The galley s been put together, hanging lockers hold our clothes, cabinets hold all kinds of stuff and drawers hold everything else. The bulbs that no one had were right there on Amazon and now all our lamps are working. A long list remains. The USCG documentation board has been ordered and when we get that mounted, we should be ready for our safety inspection. Our dog, Chloe, has informed us that we re not to help her off and on the boat anymore. She s nimble but I m concerned for her safety, so we re going to extend and heighten the dock steps. I think she got this independence from being around her friend, Elvis, the Chihuahua from Ventura Harbor Yacht Yard, who was our house guest for a couple of days. Life is returning to normal.

big winner. That evening 43 members attended a delicious dinner, catered by Jack s Bistro, on Mariposa. After dinner the visiting and camaraderie continued into the night. It was a very enjoyable day! Sunday morning was time for departure. Lt/C Lorna Londborg, P Administrative Officer The 2018 Father s Day Cruise to Santa Barbara was a huge success! A total of twelve boats made the trip to Santa Barbara Harbor. Thank you, Rick and Pat Metheny for being available to assist the docking boaters. Friday night everyone met at the host boat, Mariposa, for cocktails, hors d oeuvres and more salty stories. The Ventura Squadron also welcomed the members of the Santa Barbara Squadron for this event. A special thank you goes to Robyn Miller for providing Mariposa as the host boat. Saturday morning a delicious breakfast was served, again on Mariposa, which was prepared by Jan and Debbie Lawson. Thank you two so much, it was a truly yummy morning! Saturday afternoon Jan Lawson hosted the poker run, with her trusty assistant Vince Gerretz, which required tying nautical knots to earn your five cards. The top five poker hands earned a prize of a five-dollar lotto ticket. There were no reports of a The seas were so calm and the dolphins swam by to say hello all the way back to Ventura. It was really a wonderful weekend culminating in a very pleasant ride home. No events are planned for July or August as we know members will be using these summer months to enjoy boating. September, we plan to have another picnic on the patio at the Ventura Yacht Club. Details for this event will follow via emails! Wishing you a safe and fun summer of boating! Jully Birthdays Mindy R. Photo Shariing By Darrell O Connell Today s phones and cameras allow us to capture great images and movies with ease. These captured moments in time often remain in our camera, and while in some cases that is best, more often these images should be shared. Towards that end we have setup an account, VSPSphotos@gmail.com to make this an easy process for all squadron members. All one needs to do is send their photos to VSPSphotos@gmail.com and we will upload the photos to the VSPSphotos google photos account in the appropriate directory (VSPS class photos, 2018 picnic, Santa Barbara cruise, a great boat trip, a boat improvement or, complete restoration project) and share these photo directories with all VSPS members. I ask that you include a comment stating the name of the event where the photo was taken. If you have many photos or a video please email us and we will work out a way to get the photos and videos uploaded. We will send an e-mail to all members sharing the photos. Santa Barbara Saiill and Power Squadron Inviitatiion We've been invited to join the Santa Barbara Sail and Power Squadron (SBSPS) for dinner and fun at the Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club on JULY 14. Please see the invitation below from their Commander Dennis Johns to our Commander Steve Johnston. The flyer and all the details are available from our secretary, Chris Stein at: venturapowersquadron@gmail.com Hello Steve, First let me thank you for inviting us to the happy hour on Mariposa on Jume 15. My wife and I enjoyed meeting many of your members and we were very pleased to receive the bottle of champagne. Second, I'm sorry we are so late in this invitation but we'd very much like to have some of your members join us at an event we are having at the Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club. We have a few boats that make the passage to the Channel Islands Harbor and then several other members drive down to PCYC and we all have a very nice evening happy hour and dinner (see attached flyer for more info). Please forward this invitation to all your members and hopefully some of them will have this date open and can join us. Sincerely, Dennis Johns Commander SBSPS

It will help you plan a safe and enjoyable voyage to the Channel Islands and points beyond. It is structured to help the captain, first mate and crew with the knowledge and tips to use in planning, provisioning, outfitting the vessel and understanding the safety issues involved in pushing out from the dock. It is helpful in that we discuss the topics as they relate to both sail and power boats. Lt/C Chris Stine, S Secretary Ventura Sail and Power Squadron Executive Committee Meeting Channel Islands Harbor Oxnard, CA June 04, 2018 Preliminary Minutes Called to order at 1910. Attendees: Commander Steve Johnston Executive Officer Lt/C Dan Coverdale Lt/C Debbie Braun-Lawson Lt/C Dan Cahn Lt/C Lorna Londborg Lt/C Chris Stine Members-at-Large: Don and Janet Shultz Fred DeLamarter Darrell O Connell A quorum was present. Pledge of Allegiance was led by Commander Steve Johnston. Reports of Officers: SEO Lt/C Debbie Braun-Lawson Debbie reports that our classes are all set for this Fall with Piloting starting on September 6, Cruise Planning on September 10 and ABC on September 11. John Bath will not be back from South Carolina in time to run the ABC classes so she is setting up the lineup of instructors in hopes of finding someone else to run the classes. Junior Navigation will get their tests on June 19 and have 15 days to complete them. Seamanship takes their exam on the June 25. Admin Officer Lt/C Lorna Londborg Lorna gave an update regarding the VSPS Picnic in May. It was very well attended and there was lots of food and fellowship. After all related expenses were paid, the squadron realized a profit of $133.20. The Santa Barbara cruise will be held this month, and as of this time 12 boats are signed up to go to Santa Barbara, with 37 members signed up for Saturday night dinner. We expect approximately ten members from Santa Barbara Yacht Club to join us on Friday night on our host boat Mariposa for cocktails. Treasurer Lt/C Dan Cahn Dan made the observation that the cost for the use of Peninsula Park, the location of the May VSPS picnic, seemed kind of high. The VSPS balance is $19,167.96. Secretary Lt/C Chris Stine Chris provided the minutes for the May, 2018 meeting. A motion was made, and was seconded and approved to accept the minutes. Executive Officer Lt/C Dan Coverdale Dan reported that the VSPS booth at the Boating Expo in May was very successful and he had high praise for the volunteers, describing them as both wonderful and very helpful.

Dan also mentioned that he was at the inflatable boat store recently which was very busy with new boaters. This triggered a discussion that there might be a way to partner with the inflatable boat store to promote VSPS education program to the public, in particular the ABC class. Various ways to interest and incentives for the customers to take the ABC class were discussed. Commander Steve Johnston Steve reported that the Commander s Cup Trophy has now been fully updated up to and including this year s recipient Ev Ashworth, the recipient for 2018. National Headquarters is about the implement the organization s new name America s Boating Club in the next few months. The idea is to help bring in new and younger members. The use fee is an expense that will become more frequent as we use various facilities throughout the year. Steve reminded us there will be no meetings for the next 2 months as July and August are dark. Ongoing Business/Activities/Classes Darrell O Connell brought the Executive Board up-to-date regarding the VSPS Photo Project. He had previously proposed an idea for how we could memorialize the photos we take at our events, and agreed to research ways to do so. Darrell provided a short slideshow overview to the Board, explaining we could use a Google Photos website, which will allow for albums to be created for specific events. These albums can be shared. More information will become available to the membership as it is developed. Dan Coverdale reported that he has looked into giving short (approximately two hour or half-day) seminars as it may relate to insurance concerns. Debbie said she would be open to delegating the seminar portion of the Education program to someone else, as a subset of Education. Dan Coverdale also talked about how he believes it might be worthwhile for VSPS to recognize Henry Goldman in some way for his work as organizer of the annual Boating Expo, with a certificate and/or letter from the Executive Board. A suggestion was made about VSPS making Mr. Goldman an Honorary Member of VSPS. Commander Steve Johnston volunteered to draft a letter and share it with the Executive Board. Completed Business/Activities/Classes None reported. Future Business/Activities/Classes Don Schultz gave a By-Laws Committee report. He doesn t see anything that needs to be changed at this time, but thinks a review and possible changes will be necessary about this time next year. Dan Coverdale talked about developing leadership within the squadron, especially as it pertains to the recruiting and training for the Executive Board positions. Adjourned at 2040.
