History / Background of Mutianyu Great Wall Mutianyu Great Wall was first built in the mid-6th century during the Northern Qi, then rebuilt during the Ming dynasty, under the supervision of General Xu Da. Connected with Jiankou in the west and Lianhuachi in the east, the entire Mutianyu section is 2.2 kilometers long with 23 watertowers. Watchtowers are tensely distributed along the Great Wall. Being the longest fully restored section of Great Wall, the Mutianyu used to serve as the northern barrier defending the capital and the imperial tombs during the Ming Dynasty. Mutianyu Great Wall is around 1.5 hours of driving from downtown Beijing, or 1 hour 20 minutes from the airport by road. Mutianyu is more tourist friendly, fully restored, with excellent facilities like cable car, toboggan, chairlift. With the easier walking conditions and fewer crowds, Mutianyu is much more enjoyable to walk in than Badaling. Mutianyu Weather Conditions Mountain weather can change rapidly and unexpectedly. Weather on Mutianyu is usually like Beijing. Spring (March to May) has much wind sometimes sandstorms. Summers (June to August) are hot, humid, and sometimes rainy. Autumn is generally comfortable. January is the coldest month while July is the

warmest. If high winds, heavy rain/snow or low cloud is predicted then postpone your walk for another day. Before you start your walk check the Mutianyu Weather Forecast: http://en.weather.com.cn/weather/10101050009a.shtml Before the Trip--What to Bring Most important is a good pair of hiking walking shoes. Running shoes or trainers is fine too. Quick dry fabrics (like merino wool or polypropylene) are better than cotton or denim. A warm jacket, hat & gloves are a good idea for cold weather. The sun is very strong in Beijing and it s easy to get burnt. A sunhat and sunglasses are a good idea in hot summer. Other Items Tissues Camera Sunglasses Snacks and water And of course you'll need a light backpack in which to hold all of this! Shuttle bus

Day of Trip Your trip begins at Mutianyu shuttle bus station after you bought entrance tickets at ticket booth. Riding shuttle bus to the scenic area takes approx. 8 minutes / 10RMB p.p. At scenic area you will see two entrances: south entrance and north entrance. You can start the visit from either of it. Walk uphill to the Wall The trails behind the two entrances are well formed and easy to follow, which makes walking along it relatively easy. Walk up the trails you will reach the sixth, eighth or tenth tower. South Entrance: If you are going up from the Dream Stone City or the South Entrance, near the toboggan station, walk up the stairs you will reach towers six or eight. North Entrance: Alternatively, walk up from North Entrance close to the cable car station, and ascend the stairs you will reach tower eight or ten. Upon arriving up the Wall, you can walk either northward or southward. The northward route between tower 14 and tower 23 has the most beautiful scenery. However, the section between tower 19 and 20 is really steep, containing approx. 450 steps. If you find climbing vertical steps exciting, you will enjoy this part of the wall. Similarly, the vertical steps between the 1st and the 6th towers in the southward route may add the difficulty of your walk. If you are not in good shape, you may struggle. However, thanks to the cable car and the chairlift, you can still get to the top of Mutianyu without hiking up the wall. You only need to book a seat in the either. If you don t like too much climbing, there are three popular means of ascending / descending Mutianyu. They include: a. The Cable car b. The Chairlift c. The Toboggan ride

The Cable car If the prospect of climbing the Mutianyu turns you off, then you will love the cable car. It is a six passengers seating capacity vehicle, which offers a convenient and efficient manner of getting to the top. The cable car brings you to the platform close tower 14. You will notice that two separate companies operate the cable car and the chairlift at Mutianyu. If you take the red enclosed cable cars, it will take you up to the 14th tower from where you can either descend the wall or continue walking uphill. Open hour: 8am-5pm in summer. 8:30am 4:30pm in winter. Cable Car One Way: RMB 100 Children 12 & Under: RMB 60 Cable Car Two Way: RMB 120 Children 12 & Under: RMB 80

The Chairlift A 550 meters long open chairlift will take you from the entrance to tower six and vice versa under ten minutes. The open ski-lift kind of cable car can comfortably accommodate 2 passengers side by side. The ride offers a perfect elevated opportunity to sit back, relax and savor the breathtaking beauty of Mutianyu. The good thing about the chairlift is that if you have two-way tickets, you can ride down either using the chairlift or the toboggan. The chairlift give you the chance to relax if you had a longish hike, sit back, and enjoy the scenery. Open hour: 8am-5pm in summer. 8:30am 4:30pm in winter. Chairlift One Way: RMB 100 Children 12 & Under: RMB 60 Chairlift Two Way: RMB 120 Children 12 & Under: RMB 80

The Mutianyu Toboggan ride If you are in search of a fast and convenient way of returning to the entrance, your solution lies in riding the toboggan. Situated on between tower 6 and tower 5, no marking, near a side gate on the Wall, toboggan runs for 5184 feet or 1580 meters long. The toboggan runs all year around, only pausing operations during extreme weather conditions like heavy rains or snow. The toboggan is fun, safe and not scary at all, although you may be backed up a little. Moreover, it is easy to use control features push handle forward = speed up, pull back = brake. Avoid getting stuck behind other riders who are scared of moving fast, if you don t want to ruin your fun. Open hour: 8am-5pm in summer. 8:30am 4:30pm in winter and costs 100RMB per person. How to get off the Wall When ending up at tower 14 of Mutianyu, there are three options:

1. sit back and let the cable car (100RMB P.P / one way) take you down to the exit from tower 14, usually takes about 8 minutes; 2. walk down from tower 14 to 10 where you can get off Mutianyu then walk down the hill trail to reach the exit, usually takes 1.5 hours; 3. keep walking until reach tower 6 then go down by toboggan /chair lift (100RMB P.P one way). If you choose option 3, you can enjoy the additional hike then take toboggan down /chair lift down. When ending up at tower 6 of Mutianyu, there are also three options: 1. sit back and let the toboggan (100RMB P.P / one way) take you down to the exit from tower 6, usually takes about 10 minutes; 2. take chairlift (100RMB P.P / one way) down to the bottom, usually takes approx. 15 minutes; 3. walk down the hill trail to reach the exit, usually takes 20-30 minutes. You can buy cable car / chairlift / toboggan tickets either at the top or at the entrance.

Mutianyu watchtowers An interesting fact about construction work of Great Wall is that to make up a complete defense network, Mutianyu are connected by military architecture namely watchtowers. Getting a look watchtowers helps us gain an insight into Mutianyu Great Wall. The high fence watchtowers were first built by local governor of Fujian province Tan Lun (1520-1577) and his chief officer Oi Jiguang (1528-1588) during Ming dynasty. The watch towers were usually 2-3 stories. The watch towers were connected with each other and could send reinforcement to neighbors. The middle layer was empty with windows for discharging arrows. The upper floor was a lockout turret, surrounded by battlements. The soldiers were to be hidden inside. The lower layer was the place where cannons were to be fired on approaching enemy. The enemy were now held at bay: their arrows could not reach the soldiers on top of the wall. Their cavalry dare not approach the Great Wall. Watch towers were like fences standing on the Great Wall. Tan Lun and Qi Jiguang made out a plan to build 3,000 watchtowers from Juyongguan Pass to Shanhaiguan Pass, a huge civil engineering project indeed. When the watchtowers had been completed, Mongolian arrows could not reach the soldiers on top of the wall, their cavalry dare not approach the Great Wall. Watchtowers proved to be very useful to block the attracts of Mongolian cavalry. Simple put it did work! Mutianyu Beacon Towers Beacon towers sit on the Wall like two generals guarding the gateway to the north. With great military value, beacon towers is part of the history. It was built for making smoke or fire as signal to warn people of enemy attack, a very important defense installation of the Great Wall. To send intelligence quickly and effectively, Ming Dynasty introduced a complete beacon fire system in 1466. A system that the amount of smoke or fire indicated the degree of emergency, which explains how beacon towers worked. One cannon shot and one beacon fire are to be made when 100-200 enemy troops invade the territory. Two shots and two fires are to be made when 500 enemy troops drive southward. Three shots are to be discharged and three fires are to be made when 1,000 enemy come.

Should 5,000 enemy forces approach, four shots and four fires are to be discharged and made. Should over 10,000 enemy troops invade the territory, it goes without saying, five shots and five fires are to be made.
