Andrew Gonzalez had a game-high 25 points but it wasn t enough as the HBU Huskies fell to visiting UMKC by a score of 102-87 at Sharp Gym on Dec. 12. The Huskies have three players averaging double figures: Andrew Gonzalez (17.3 ppg), Mario Flaherty (13.9 ppg) and Wendell Preadom (12.8 ppg). They are led on the boards by Flaherty's 8.8 rpg. Starting Here The Broncos have had 8 different players start in a game this season and have had to use six different line-ups, mainly due the injuries of Ben Dowdell (leg) and Kevin Foster (foot). The only players to have started in all nine games this season are Robert Smith and Troy Payne. The Broncos have 13 players who have appeared in a game this season, but only seven have played in all nine games. 2009-10 Game-by-Game Starting Lineups Date Opponent Score G (1) G (2) F (3) F (4) C (5) 11/13 at CSU Bakersfield W, 84-81 Smith Foster Payne Dowdell Trasolini 11/16 vs. Menlo College W, 79-55 Smith Foster Payne Dowdell Trasolini 11/19 at San Diego State L, 53-86 Smith Cowels Payne Dowdell Trasolini 11/22 at Pacific L, 57-84 Smith Foster Payne Dowdell Trasolini 11/25 vs. Northern Arizona L, 72-88 Smith Foster Payne Harrison Trasolini 11/28 vs. Fresno State W, 74-67 Smith Cowels Payne Harrison Cunningham 12/1 at UC Santa Barbara W, 79-68 Smith Foster Payne Trasolini Cunningham 12/5 vs. No. 21 UNLV L. 63-66 Smith Cowels Payne Trasolini Cunningham 12/11 vs. Dominican W, 69-65 Smith Cowels Payne Trasolini Cunningham Leading Scorer Out Indefinitely In what might have been a Homecoming of sorts won't be. Santa Clara s leading scorer and Houston native Kevin Foster, the West Coast Conference s second-leading scorer this season, is out indefinitely with a right foot injury. Foster has a fracture of the fifth metatarsal that will require surgery in Santa Clara over the holidays. Foster injured his foot in the final minutes of Santa Clara s 79-68 victory at UCSB on Dec. 1. Bronco head coach Kerry Keating said he will know more specifically how long Foster will be out after they talk to the doctor post-surgery. Keating added an injury like Foster s normally requires 2-3 months of recovery prior to any contact. Obviously we are very disappointed for Kevn, said Keating. Kevin was playing 31 minutes a game and as our leading scorer, he will hard to replace. This will give him a chance to rehab the injury, get fully recovered and continue to find himself on and off the court as the leading scorer of a young team. It s hard for everyone, but we can t stop or slow down. With Kevin out it will give our young guys more time on the court. Injuries happen and we know this will be difficult for Kevin. It will be difficult for the entire team, continued Keating. If it s a season-ending injury, he will be able to redshirt which is a real positive in this situation. We will have nine scholarship players when Ben Dowdell, who missed the last four games with a calf injury, returns next week. We just have to keep working hard and continuing to get better. Foster is second in the league in scoring and leads the WCC in steals and three-pointers made. This season Foster was averaging 19.8 ppg, playing 31.5 mpg with 2.2 spg and 2.8 rpg. He has led the Broncos in scoring in each of the six games he s played this season, including a seasonhigh 25 points in the 74-67 win over Fresno State on Nov. 28. 2 Bronco Basketball Notes Santa Clara at Houston Baptist SCU Record by the Numbers in 2009.10 RECORD HOME ROAD NEUTRAL OT Overall: 5-4 3-2 2-2 - - Non-Conference: 5-4 3-2 2-2 - - WCC: - - - - - SCU Record by the Numbers in 2008.09 RECORD HOME ROAD NEUTRAL OT Overall: 16-17 11-3 4-10 1-4 - Non-Conference: 8-9 6-1 2-5 0-3 - WCC: 7-7 5-2 2-5 - 1-2 Comparing team statistics CATEGORY SCU HBC OVERALL RECORD...5-4...2-5 CONFERENCE RECORD...-...- TOTAL PTS. Foster was named to the preseason WCC all-conference team this year after being named the WCC Newcomer of the Year last season, breaking Steve Nash s single season record with 85 three pointers. He was also named a Freshman All-American, to the WCC All-Freshman team and All-WCC honorable mention. He averaged 14.7 ppg and 2.4 rpg last season, breaking Kurt Rambis freshman scoring record with 486 points. Turn the Page Putting a microscope on this year's first nine games and comparing it to last year's first nine games, it's obvious Santa Clara's faster style of play is helping Santa Clara grab more steals, rebounds and hit the line more often than last season. Even though the Broncos are averaging more ppg, they need to work on their shooting from the field. Santa Clara has 22 more steals after its ninth game this year than it did last year at the same juncture. Santa Clara has 77 steals this season, led by Troy Payne's 2.1 spg. Santa Clara is going to the free throw line twice as much as they did last year at this point. Santa Clara was shooting 71 percent from the free throw line last year, hitting 84 of 118. This year they are shooting 69 percent from the free throw line, hitting 178 of 259. Santa Clara had 295 rebounds up to this point last year and currently it has 336. Santa Clara's John Bryant led the country with 14.3 rpg last year in the regular season. Santa Clara was shooting almost 47 percent last year and is shooting just 40 percent currently. The Broncos are currently scoring 70.0 ppg and their opponents 73.3 ppg. Last season, at the same mark Santa Clara was scoring 61.3 ppg, but opponents were only scoring 55.0 ppg. Younger A team that features no seniors and now eight underclassmen, SCU starts a very young team after three-year starter Ben Dowdell missed four games due to a leg injury and it was made a lot younger Dec. 1 when it was announced leading scorer Kevin Foster was out indefinitely following an injury late in the UCSB victory. The past two games Santa Clara started three freshmen (Raymond Cowels, Robert Smith and Chris Cunningham), a sophomore (Marc Trasolini) and a junior transfer (Troy Payne). According to STATSHEET.com, Santa Clara is the eighth-youngest team in the country; and it is the youngest team in the WCC with an average of 1.87. Portland has the oldest team in the WCC with an average of 3.61 and it is the third-most experienced team in the country. The average is figured on the sum of minutes each player plays is multiplied by their class year (Freshmen=1, Sophomore=2, Junior=3 and Senior=4) and is divided by the total team minutes. The Broncos were quite young last year as well. According to STATSHEET.COM (March 2, 2009), the Broncos had the 38th youngest team in the NCAA last year of the 342 Division I teams, which means 89% of the Division I teams had a more-experienced starting five than the Broncos. Leading Santa Clara has three players averaging double figures: Kevin Foster (19.8 ppg - out indefinitely), Marc Trasolini (14.6 ppg) and Robert Smith (11.2 ppg). They are lead on the boards by Troy Payne, who averages In Case You Wondered Tallest Player: Marc Trasolini (6-9) Shortest Player: Robert Smith (6-0) Heaviest Player: Marc Trasolini (235) Lightest Player: Troy Alexander (180) Juniors (4): Ben Dowdell, Nate Mensah, Troy Payne, Michael Santos Sophomores (5): Troy Alexander, Phillip Bach, Kevin Foster, Scott Thompson, Marc Trasolini Freshmen (5): Ray Cowels, Chris Cunningham, Niyi Harrison, Kyle Perricone, Robert Smith Breakdown By State/Country: California (6) Chris Cunningham (Diamond Bar), Niyi Harrison (Milpitas); Troy Payne (Los Angeles); Kyle Perricone (Palo Alto); Michael Santos (Occidental); Robert Smith (Perris). Payne has 8+ rebounds in five games, including nine vs. Fresno State. Smith follows Payne behind with 2.1 apg. Trasolini leads the team with 1.8 bpg. Eazy Does It Freshman point guard Robert Smith has come on strong in the last five games as he has scored in double digits in five consecutive games. In this stretch he is averaging 13.3 points per game and shooting 20 of 51 from the field (39%), including 7 of 17 from beyond the arc (41%). Smith is also 21 of 30 from the free throw line in this stretch (70%). Traz Marc Trasolini has scored in double figures seven times and has two doubledoubles this season. In nine games he has scored no fewer than eight points (at Pacific) and has scored 20+ three times this year after only accomplishing that feat just once last year. He has scored 22 points in each of the last two games vs. UNLV and vs. Domnican. He tied his career high with eight field goals vs. Dominican, also hitting eight shots vs. USF on Feb. 21, 2009. One the year he is averaging 14.6 ppg, good for second on the team. He is also second on the team with 7.3 rpg. Trasolini leads the team with 1.8 bpg, collecting almost half of the teams blocks. Trasolini has 16 of the 35 blocks Santa Clara has collected this season. After John Bryant led the country with 28 double-doubles last year, finishing his career with 50 even, Trasolini's two double-double are the only career double-doubles on the current Bronco roster. The 22 points vs. No. 21 UNLV on Dec. 5 was his second-best effort this season after he scored 23 points vs. Menlo on Nov. 16. He scored a career-best 24 points at New Hampshire Jan. 4, 2009. The first three games he shot 10+ free throws, making 8+, but was just a perfect 6-6 vs. Dominican. Three Santa Clara entered the Dominican shooting 31 percent from the three point line, but went only 1-12 from beyond the arc, shooting 8.3 percent. It's their worst performance from the three point line since they were 1-12 vs. USF on March 8, 2008, but the Broncos won the WCC Tournament game vs. the Dons 51-50 behind John Bryant's 25 points and 17 rebounds. Inside the arc though, Santa Clara shot 57 percent, making 20 of 35 field goals. Santa Clara Head Coach Kerry Keating Kerry Keating enters his third season with his youngest team, including no seniors and 10 underclassmen. This year s youth-filled Bronco team is Keating s most athletic team yet. Gone to graduation is 6 11, 275lb. WCC Player of the Year John Bryant, a 2009 AP honorable mention All-American and the nation s leading rebounder during the regular season. With the loss of Bryant, Santa Clara looks to run an up-tempo style offense with more high-energy bursts in transition. Keating led the Broncos to 16 wins last season and a trip to the West Coast Conference Tournament semi-finals. In addition to Bryant being named the WCC Player of the Year, Kevin Foster was named the WCC Newcomer of the Year. Three Broncos were named to the WCC All-Freshman team with the trio breaking 10 Bronco freshmen records. It was a record-setting year for the Broncos, who won the 2008 Cable Car Classic with an 89-88 overtime win vs. UTEP. Bryant became the first Bronco in school history to score 1,600+ points, grab 1,100+ rebounds and block 200+ shots. Bryant finished his career at Santa Clara No. 1 in rebounds (1,152), No. 1 in blocks (246) and No. 6 in scoring (1,667). He was No. 1 in the country in double-doubles, rebounds per game and total rebounds during regular season play. Foster s 85 three-pointers last season broke two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash s Bronco record. Nash set the SCU record in 1995 when he made 84. Foster also broke the single season record for three pointers attempted with 232, breaking the Bronco record set by Kyle Bailey in 2005 when he attempted 198. In addition, Marc Trasolini broke the Bronco record for single season shooting percentage, hitting 68.1% - shattering a 37-year old record set by Mike Stewart in 1972 when Stewart shot 64.7%. Michael Santos and Ben Dowdell were both named to the WCC Academic Honor Roll with the men s team posting a 3.1 GPA in the Spring 2009 quarter. Keating s first Bronco team won 15 games in 2007-08, finishing fourth in the WCC as the eight-team league sent a record three teams to the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Both Brody Angley and John Bryant were named to the West Coast Conference First Team. Angley broke the school record for minutes played in a season; and Bryant led the WCC in blocks and rebounds and was second in scoring. Bryant broke the SCU career blocks record, entering his senior year with 162, and single season record for blocks with 76 his junior year. Mitch Henke was named the WCC Postgraduate Male Athlete of the Year. In addition, all four seniors graduated. Keating was named the 14th men s basketball coach in Santa Clara history on April 6, 2007 and was introduced to the media at a press conference on April 9, 2007. Keating came to Santa Clara after serving four seasons as an assistant coach at UCLA, helping the Bruins to Final Four appearances in 2006 and 07. Keating is only the fifth SCU head coach since Bob Feerick took the reigns of the program in 1950 and the first Bronco men s basketball head coach to be hired without having attended or coached as an assistant at SCU since 1926 when Harlan Dykes was hired as head coach. Marc Trasolini and Robert Smith were named to the West Coast Classic All-Tournament team. Trasolini was the second-best rebounder in the Classic, pulling down 7.8 rpg; Kevin Foster was second-best in steals with 1.8 spg; and Smith was the fifth-best in assists with 2.8 apg. Santa Clara led the five-team Classic in steals with 8.0 spg. Quick Hands Santa Clara had 12 steals and forced 23 turnovers at UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 1. It was most steals for a Kerry Keating team in the last three years. It was the most steals by a Bronco team since Santa Clara stole the ball 14 times in an 86-35 win over Notre Dame de Namur on Dec. 20, 2005. They forced 21 turnovers that night. Tale of Two Teams The 10 turnovers committed by the Broncos vs. Fresno State were the fewest made on the season, including just three in the second half. The Broncos had 56 turnovers in their prior three games combined. The Broncos have had 10 turnovers five times under Coach Keating with the last time being 10 vs. Gonzaga Feb. 26, 2009. The last time Santa Clara turned the ball over fewer than 10 times: it had nine turnovers in the 63-47 victory vs. Saint Mary's on March 4, 2007 in the WCC Championship semi-final game that pushed SCU to the finals. Santa Clara has been a tale of two teams this year. In the five wins, the Broncos averaged 14.8 turnovers per game, but in the four losses they are averaging 19.3 turnovers per game. In addition, the Broncos averaged 77.0 points per game in the five wins with the opponents scoring just 67.2. In the four losses Santa Clara averaged 61.2 ppg and the opponents have averaged 81.0 ppg. In its first four wins it had fewer turnovers than the opponent and also led at half-time of each game. But against Dominican, they turned the ball over one more time than the Penguins and were also trailing at halftime. In its three losses the opposite was true on in all but one half. They led No. 21 UNLV 39-31 at the break, but fell 66-63 in the end. Surprisingly the Broncos are shooting 67 percent in their five wins from the free throw line, but 72 percent in their four losses. They are 118-176 in wins and 60-83 in losses. at UCSB * Santa Clara led 42-29 at the half. The 42 points were the most for a Santa Clara team since it scored 48 in an 87-55 win over USF on Feb. 25, 2008. They had two players in double figures in the first half for the second straight game as Raymond Cowels had 13 and Robert Smith had 11. * Santa Clara had four players in double figures for the second time this year: Foster had 18, Marc Trasolini had 15, Cowels tied a career-high with 13 points and Smith scored 11. The other game was at CSU Bakersfield when Foster led all scorers with 21 points, all put up in the second half. * Troy Alexander played a season-high 19 minutes in the win at the point, hitting six of nine free throw attempts in the second half. Alexander is coming back from two surgeries in the off-season after starting the first seven of eight games last year. He didn't play on a regular basis last season after he suffered a sprained left shoulder vs. Sac State on Dec. 6; and had right wrist surgery on Jan. 23, 2009 that shut down his season completely. More than, Less than SCU is 1-0 when scoring 80+ points this year. SCU was 5-0 last season when scoring 80-89 points and are now 8-1 under Keating. When they score 70+, the Broncos are 19-3 under Keating, including 4-1 this season. But, when scoring between 50-69, the Broncos are 0-2 this season, 8-14 last season and 16-28 in Keating's watch. 6 Bronco Basketball Notes Santa Clara at Houston Baptist
