For the Lady Rebels to have a successful season, they will need to take advantage of playing the entire month of November on their home courts. They easily took care of the first step, as they posted a 35-point win over Southern Utah in the Thomas & Mack Center on Saturday. Next up is Tuesday night s contest against Pepperdine, the first of five straight games in the. UNLV spread the scoring around in its first game, which could be expected with just a nine-player active rotation, as four players finished in double figures. UNLV also shined on the defense end and was impressive on the boards with a +16 rebound margin. That could be a good sign for their chances against Pepperdine, as the Waves have a -14.5 rebound margin in its first two games, both double-digit losses on the road. UNLV owns the all-time series 4-2, though Pepperdine won the last meeting between the two, claiming a win in the Thomas & Mack Center in the season opener of the 2006-07 campaign. Lady Rebel coach Kathy Olivier comes into Tuesday s game with 99 victories on the bench for UNLV (331 in her career.). A win over the Waves would make her the fifth coach in program history to reach 100 wins at the school. UNLV Probable Starters nikki wheatley #10 G So. UNLV vs. Pepperdine Nov. 17, 2015 Head Coach kathy olivier When UNLV was searching for its next women s basketball coach -- a person that could return the proud program to its place among the nation s best -- it didn t have to look far. The school turned to one of its own by hiring former Lady Rebel All-American Kathy Olivier as the eighth full-time head coach in UNLV women s basketball history on April 22, 2008. The Lady Rebels immediately showed their renewed enthusiasm for their new coach, and the team was the talk of the conference after an inspiring run to the Mountain West Conference Tournament semifinals as the sevenseed. Olivier s first recruit to the program, Jamie Smith, signed exactly one month after she was hired, would 10 months later became the firstever Lady Rebel to be named MWC Freshman of the Year. In 2009-10 the Lady Rebels continued their climb back to prominence under Olivier, and posted several impressive upsets, including road wins at Utah and New Mexico and a home victory over eventual Sweet 16 participant San Diego State. Olivier s best season would come in 2011-12, as UNLV finished the campaign with a 22-10 record, an 11-win improvement over the previous year that ranked as the sixthbest in the nation, and the Lady Rebels returned to the postseason for the first time since 2005-06 with a trip to the WNIT. In the 2012-13 season, Olivier was able to guide the team from a rough non-conference going to an 8-8 record in Mountain West play, good enough to earn the fourth seed in the conference tournament. Olivier came to UNLV after serving as head coach at UCLA for 15 years (from May 3, 1993, to March 11, 2008). While head coach of the Bruins she helped produce two Pac-10 Players of the Year, three Pac-10 Freshmen of the Year, a Pac-10 team championship, a Pac- 10 Tournament Championship and a trip to the 1999 Elite Eight. The former Kathy Ricks, Olivier was a standout player at Cal State Fullerton and then at UNLV, where she earned All-America honors while averaging a team-high 16.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in the 1979-80 season. She still ranks on several all-time lists at UNLV, as her career 18.1 ppg average is the second-highest in team history. UNLV brings back three starters from a year ago, starting with senior center Aley Rohde, one of the top rebounders and shot blockers in the Mountain West. The Lady Rebels also bring back their starting backcourt from a year ago, sophomores Brooke Johnson and point guard Nikki Wheatley, an All-MW Freshman team honoree. The other two starters from last year are big losses for the Lady Rebels, as forward Alana Cesarz and Danielle Miller were both named All-Mountain West, while Miller was the leading scorer in the league. Helping to replace them will be a pair of transfers from Kansas, twins Dakota and Dylan Gonzalez, both of whom will be in the top-six rotation. Another key player for 2015-16 is returnee Amie Callaway, another center for the Lady Rebels who has 46 starts entering her senior year. Last time out... Four Lady Rebels finished in double-figures and UNLV used a smothering first half defense to open a 47-17 edge on the way to a 79-44 victory over Southern Utah in front of 1,622 fans in the Thomas & Mack Center on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore guard Dakota Gonzalez, in her first official game in a UNLV jersey, set a new career-high with 21 points and hit five-of-seven from three-point range. Joining her in double-figures was Amie Callaway with 13 and nine rebounds, Brooke Johnson with 13 and Paris Strawther with 12 off the bench. UNLV outscored the Thunderbirds by 23-8 in the first quarter and 24-9 in the second quarter to open up its 30-point halftime edge. SUU was held to just six made field goals in the opening half (6-of-31), and to 25.8% for the game. For the afternoon, the Lady Rebels shot 41.4% (29-of-70) from the floor, and connected on 8-of-21 from three-point range for 38.1%. UNLV struggled at the line though, hitting just 13-of-25 for 52%. The boards were dominated by UNLV, with a 57-41 margin. UNLV also outscored SUU 40-10 in the paint, and 24-1 on bench points. A pair of Lady Rebels reached double-figures in rebounds, with senior center Aley Rohde grabbed 12 and sophomore point guard Nikki Wheatley added 10. Johnson paced the team in assists with six. SUU placed just one player in double-figures, as Brenu Reid posted 18 thanks to 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range. The Thunderbirds connected on 5-of-18 from downtown for 27.8% and were 7-of-16 at the line for 43.8%. They committed 20 turnovers, leading to a 22-8 edge on points off
