eason in Review No lowing Down rish have another record-setting season, yet fall short in bid for third-straight B EAT title n 2006-07, the Notre Dame men's swimming and diving team raced out of the blocks and posted one of the best starts in program history. The rish won their first eight dual meets en route to garnering the program s highest national ranking of 16th in late November. Notre Dame concluded the season with an 11-3 record and finished the season with a runner-up performance at the B EAT Championships. A bid for a three-peat at the B EAT Championships fell just shy as West Virginia topped the rish 765.5-761. Notre Dame experienced yet another successful conference meet as eight school records fell by the wayside. The Fighting rish had 11 student-athletes garner all-b EAT accolades and diving coach Caiming Xie claimed his second straight B EAT men's diving coach of the year award. Freshman John Lytle posted a team-best five all-conference honors along with establishing program records in the 100 and 200- yard freestyle events. Lytle was also a part of the school-record setting 400 free, 800 free and 400 medley relays at the B EAT meet. eniors Ted Brown and both earned four all-b EAT accolades. Brown concluded his stellar Notre Dame career with 10 all-conference honors, which stands as the second-most in program history behind his classmate 's total of 12. Kegelman earned three all-league nods at the 2007 meet as did sophomore Jeff Wood, who was competing in his first season with the rish after transferring from ndiana University. Despite not notching a third straight conference title, the 49th campaign in program history still had several high points. For the third straight season, Notre Dame registered double-digits in dual-meet victories. An emergence of young swimmers combined with the final go-around for some of the program's most decorated performers provided for a quality year. The diving corps continued to excel behind Xie's tutelage. ophomore Michael Bulfin registered all-b EAT honors off both the one-meter and three-meter boards. am toner produced his finest season to date at Notre Dame. The junior notched an all-b EAT accolade in the one-meter competition. The duo along with junior teammate teven Crowe all qualified for the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. Bulfin, who qualified for the NCAA wimming and Diving Championships in 2006, fell just short of returning to the meet one year later. He totaled 339.90 points during the three-meter prelims, which placed him second heading into the finals. He registered 312.20 in the afternoon s finals to finish with 652.10 points and in fifth place. toner was third going into the final round after totaling 337.15 points in the prelims of the threemeter competition. He posted 277 points in the finals to place 11th with a combined total of 614.15 points. Crowe had 272 points after the prelims and registered 277.45 points during the finals for a 549.45 total. toner and Bulfin placed seventh and eighth, respectively, off the one-meter board during the first day of action at the meet, which was held in the Canham Natatorium. The Zone C Diving Championships am toner earned all-b EAT accolades off of the one-meter board as a junior. He was one of 11 Notre Dame men s swimmers or divers to garner all-conference honors in 2007. marked the end of the 2007-08 campaign for the Fighting rish. The season commenced with the 42nd annual Dennis tark Relays and for the 10th time in 11 years, the rish captured the title. Notre Dame registered 264 points to best runner-up Oakland by 106 points. The rish claimed 11 of 13 events while taking down five meet records. At one point during the evening, the rish captured seven straight events en route to the dominating victory. The marks eclipsed by the Fighting rish on the night were in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:25.46), 400-yard butterfly relay (3:23.76), 400-yard backstroke relay (3:28.36), the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:07.01) and in synchronized diving (244.20). A matchup with Texas A&M down in College tation, Texas, began the dual-meet portion of the rish slate. Notre Dame entered the meet ranked 17th in the first CCAA poll and captured nine of 16 events to top the Aggies 169-129. ophomores Wood and am Pendergast both collected two wins apiece in their first meet for the Fighting rish. Wood won both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke, while Pendergast, who did not compete during his freshman season, notched victories in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. The duo were also part of the winning 200-yard medley relay team for the rish. Joining them on the winning relay quartet were Kegelman and Louis Cavadini. Kegelman added to his victory total by winning the 100-yard butterfly. Also claiming titles for the rish against the Aggies were junior Jay Vanden Berg in the 1,000-yard free, Brown in the 200-yard free and Lytle in the 100 free. The rish took three of the five scoring spots in 12 of 14 non-relay events. Notre Dame opened the home portion of its slate with a showdown against No. 18 Purdue. The 17thranked rish produced a 12-point victory (156-144) over the Boilermakers to snap an 18-meet losing streak to instate rival. The meet went down to the final event with the rish holding a slim three-point edge. Notre Dame delivered with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay to take the meet and improve to 2-0 on the season. The Fighting rish claimed victories in nine of 16 events, with Brown and Vanden Berg each posting two wins apiece against Purdue. Brown notched a crucial win in the 200-yard M, which was the secondto-last event of the meet. He also took the 200-yard free, while Vanden Berg won both the 1,000 free and 500 free. Bulfin registered a win off of the three-meter board. Wood and Lytle picked up wins in the 100-yard back and 100-yard free, respectively. They were also part of the winning 400-yard medley and 400-yard free relay teams. Joining them on the 400 medley unit were Kegelman and Pendergast. and freshman Andrew Hoffman were the other two members of the 400 free relay unit that clinched the victory versus the Boilermakers. A dominating 165-75 triumph over Michigan tate in the Rolfs Aquatic Center featured the rish taking 10 of 13 events. Brown notched wins in the 200-yard free and 200-yard butterfly for the rish. Also posting wins for Notre Dame were Louis Cavadini (50 free), am toner (one-meter diving), Andrew MacKay (200 back), Vanden Berg (500 free), Bulfin (three-meter diving) and Tyler Angelo (200 breast) along with the 400-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays. Conference rival Pittsburgh came to Notre Dame on the following day and suffered a 172-126 defeat at the hands of the Fighting rish. Notre Dame took nine of 16 events to improve to 4-0. Notre Dame s 200- yard medley relay quartet of Kegelman, Lytle, Wood and Pendergast took first in a time of 1:32.30. The rish placed first in the 200-yard free relay with Kegelman, Lytle, and Nick Fanslau posting a mark of 1:24.38. Kegelman won the 100-yard butterfly in 50.18, while Lytle was victorious in the 200 free (1:41.43). Also posting wins against the Panthers was Louis Cavadini in the 100 free (47.01) along with freshmen Ross Moore in the 200 fly (1:51.20) and MacKenzie LeBlanc in the 400 M (4:05.68). The win over Pittsburgh propelled the rish to a No. 16 ranking in the College wim Coaches Association of american (CCAA pol)l. That marked the highest ranking ever in program history. Notre Dame wrapped up first-semester competition with a third-place finish at the Ohio tate nvitational. The rish totaled 601 points in the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. eventh-ranked Minnesota captured the meet title with 1,193 points. The highlight for the rish came on the third and final day of the meet as freshman MacKenzie LeBlanc claimed a victory in the 200-yard butterfly in a poolrecord time of 1:48.36. He was the lone winner for Notre Dame in the event. The annual winter break training session took the team to Florida. The rish competed in the second annual aint Andrews Collegiate nvitational wim Meet at aint Andrews chool in Boca Raton, Fla. on unday, Dec. 31. Teams from Notre Dame, North Carolina tate, University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and Catholic University participated in the event. All of the races in the meet were contested over non-standard collegiate distances and the meet was not scored. Highlights for Notre Dame included a 1-2-3 sweep in both the 150-yard and 75-yard butterfly events. Ross led the sweep in the 150 fly with his time of 1:22.31. Kegelman was a triple-winner at the meet and he led the way in the 75-yard butterfly with his time of 36.42. Kegelman also won the 100-yard M (54.03) and swam the anchor leg on the winning 300-yard freestyle relay (2:16.8). Notre Dame then took to the pool in the cots Collegiate Relays held at aint Andrews chool in Boca Raton, Fla. on aturday, Jan. 6. The rish won nine of 12 events. Teams from Notre Dame, North Carolina tate, Binghamton, Catholic University, Penn tate-erie and Rider University competed in the meet. The cots Collegiate Relays Meet, like the aint Andrews Collegiate nvitational Meet consisted of competition over a non-standard meet format. Neither meet was scored. Kegelman continued his winning ways in Florida by being a part of four victorious relays. His wins in the cotts Collegiate Relays were in the 300-yard medley relay, the 300-yard butterfly relay, the 100-yard butterfly relay and the 10-man 250-yard freestyle relay. Other four-event winners in the meet were Wood (300 medley, 100 back, 300 back, 250 free relays) and Lylte (300 medley, 300 free, 100 free, 250 free relays). and Brown each contributed to three winning relays. The Notre Dame divers took to the board on Jan. 3 for the Mike Peppe One-Meter Diving Meet. rish divers placed one through four in the meet with toner taking first with 337.75 points, which was the third-highest total in program history for one-meter dual-meet dives. There were eight divers in the field, with Michigan tate being represented with three divers and Eastern llinois having one competitor. The second half of the season began with a trip to annual rival Oakland. The rish took down the olden rizzlies 181-119. Lytle, Moore and Bulfin all won two events in the OU Aquatics Center. n all, Notre Dame won 11 of 16 events during the meet. Lytle s first win came in the third event of the night as he took the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.16. His second victory came in the 100-yard freestyle with a mark of 46.77. Brown captured a win of his own in the 1,000-yard free with a time of 9:33.99. Moore registered a win in the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.78). The one-meter board was the first diving event of the night and Bulfin registered 323.12 points for the win. Bulfin and toner would also go 1-2 off the threemeter board with respective scores of 343.80 and 342.53. Wood, who was a part of the winning 200-yard medley relay along with Kegelman, Pendergast and Ray Toomey in a time of 1:32.70, captured the 200- yard backstroke in 1:51.58. The Fighting rish produced another win as freshman Andrew Deters and junior Rob eery went 1-2 with respective times of 4:38.41 and 4:42.05 in the 500- yard free. Notre Dame secured some crucial points by going 1-2-3 in the 100-yard fly as Cavadini placed first in 50.48, with Kegelman in second (50.66) and Toomey in third (50.90). The second victory of the night for Moore came in the 200-yard M as he touched the wall in 1:54.58. A trip to Cleveland tate for a quad meet gave Notre Dame three more wins to bring its total to eight straight, which was the best start to a season since the 1974-75 campaign when the rish started out of the gate 10-0. n addition to topping the Vikings 152-91, Notre Dame defeated Duquesne (156-41) and Xavier (168-29). Kegelman and Wood both collected individual wins and were part of the victorious 200-yard medley relay. Other winners for the Fighting rish were Deters in the 1,000-yard free (9:27.51), Brown in the 200-yard free (1:41.19) and the 200 free relay (1:25.68). That quartet consisted of Vanden Berg, eery along with seniors Justin Barber and Brian Freeman. Pendergast and Lytle joined Kegelman and Wood on the winning 200 medley relay (1:33.30). Notre Dame had a perfect 8-0 record and a No. 16 ranking when No. 8 Northwestern visited the Rolfs Aquatic Center on January 20. The eighth-ranked Wildcats used wins in 13 of 16 events to take a 167-131 victory and give the rish their first setback of the season. Bulfin led the rish with wins off both the onemeter (317.77) and three-meter boards (346.80). Notre Dame s other victory was posted in the 1,650- yard freestyle as Deters touched the wall in 15:39.88. The 17th-ranked Fighting rish closed out the home schedule with the hamrock nvitational. Notre Dame recorded wins over Oakland (230-139) and Connecticut (284-86) yet fell to No. 19 West Virginia (228-142) and Penn tate (221.5-147.5) On the first day of the two-day meet, Bulfin won off the one-meter board by posting a school-record total of 339.40. The sophomore was victorious in the threemeter competition on the second and final day of the event with a point total of 378.30, which was 5.55 points away from the school record. Brown was the only other winner for the hosts as he spearheaded an rish sweep of the top four spots in the 500-yard free as he touched the wall in 4:31.55. The 2006-07 dual-meet slate concluded with a visit to B EAT rival Louisville. No. 17 Notre Dame captured a 147-94 victory over the Cardinals in the Ralph Wright Natatorium. The Fighting rish won seven of the 13 events to move their record to 11-3. Wood and Hoffman helped the rish to the victory as they captured wins in the 200-yard back (1:51.04) and the 200-yard free (1:41.58), respectively, along with being a part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay unit (3:04.81). Joining them on the relay were Lytle and Brown. Crowe had a personal-best day off of the threemeter board as he registered 352.28 points to take the win. Bulfin won his ninth event of the season by taking the one-meter competition with a point total of 333.53. Also winning for the rish were Deters in the 1,000-yard free in a team season-best time of 9:25.35. Freeman won the 500 free in 4:40.72. Following the conclusion of his senior season, Brown received accolades for not only excelling in the pool, but also for his stellar performance in the classroom.
