The Forest News Taken on one of the days when the course was covered in snow WELCOME TO 2018 December in Ireland is not ideal for golf. The inclement weather conditions have closed the course throughout the month. Snow and frost have covered the course for periods of time, causing competitions to be cancelled. The avid golfer has been forced to take more time off the course than on it over the past month. There were days during the month after the heavy snow lifted that many local courses were still closed whereas New Forest was open for business. It is remarkable to see that on the shortest day of the year, and after all the poor weather all the machines were out cutting greens, fairways and rough grass prior to Christmas week. Hopefully the weather improves and allows all of us golfers to get prepared for the season ahead. The management at New Forest would like to wish all members a happy New Year, and continued success in all inter club team competitions. New Forest Golf Club s Signature hole, the 9 th covered in frost

New Forest Seniors On Wednesday, December, 6 th, the very popular New Forest senior Christmas hamper competition, which was run over seven weeks, came to a successful conclusion. Each player s best five scores were taken into account and this led to a very sporting and keenly contested competition. Despite the inclement weather during November and the beginning of December, New Forest G.C. remained open, an extraordinary achievement and testament to the superb condition of this magnificent championship course. This intrepid group of sprightly evergreen players came out in great numbers each week and competed bravely in order to win the magnificent hampers on offer. Some excellent scores were returned each week over the thirteen holes, and it was apparent that players would have to score in the high twenties at least, in order to finish in the top four, such was the standard. When each player s scores were counted, the four winners finished with an average score of 130 points a fitting end to a brilliantly contested competition. The truly deserving winners of the coveted hampers were, Ollie Egan, Martin Halferty, Gerard Mulligan and John Kirby. Well done, gents. Presentation of Hampers On Wednesday, 13 th December, a large number of seniors gathered for the presentation of the hampers in our fine restaurant. Delicious, hot savoury finger food was served up by restaurant manager, Mr. Jimmy O Sullivan. One could not fail to observe the friendliness, good humour and genuine sense of camaraderie of the seniors, as they chatted and bantered about the competition. Chairman of the seniors, Mr Noel Jackson, welcomed all to the presentation and commented on the large number that turned up. He extended a very warm welcome to Noel Baker on his first visit back to the club since his illness over a year ago. Also welcomed back was Gabriel Bollard who had been away. Men s captain, Mr. Michael Donegan sent his apologies for being absent. However, he was represented by Mr. John Mc Cormack, Vice-Captain. Noel, on behalf of all seniors, congratulated Michael and John on their new positions and wished them every success during 2018. A lively discussion ensued regarding competitions, handicaps, outings and finances. Mr. Peter McKenna gave a full and comprehensive financial report. He stated that the seniors had sponsored competitions over the year. The Wednesdays were a resounding success with the seniors competing regularly every week. It was also wonderful to witness many seniors finishing on the winners podium in club competitions on a number of occasions. Finances are in good shape, stated Peter, and he was applauded for his excellent work throughout the year. Mr. Ollie Egan gave a detailed account on the handicap system for the hamper competition and all agreed that it worked quite well this year. Noel announced that he was stepping down as chairman of the seniors. Ollie Egan was elected unopposed. Congratulations, Ollie. Martin Halferty and John Kirby were elected to the committee. Noel was thanked for the wonderful job he did as chairman. Noel then presented the winners with their hampers amid wild applause. A raffle was also held and, much to the delight and amusement of all, nobody went home empty handed! John Cunningham and Stephen Barrett, owner and director of golf respectively, were thanked most profusely for their continued support and encouragement. Jimmy, restaurant manager, and Chanel, restaurant staff, were praised for always being on hand every Wednesday to provide food for the seniors. Donna was also thanked for her help every Wednesday. Also thanked were Tom Maguire who, in his own unassuming way, always helped, and Donal and the ground staff for having the course in immaculate condition. Senior committee for 2018 is; Ollie Egan, Noel Jackson, Peter Mc Kenna, John Mc Cormack, Martin Halferty and John Kirby.

New Year at New Forest With the new season of golf on the horizon it s time to take the clubs out of the hibernation. Take a look at your grips. Sometimes all you need is a new set of grips to feel like you ve got your hands on a whole new set. Come in to check out what s on offer. Ask about grip fitting. We have all sizes of grip to accommodate for every hand size. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Q: Do you have to make a reasonable effort to find a ball that may be lost or out of bounds if you would prefer to continue play with a provisional ball that you have played to the middle of the fairway? A; No, there is nothing in the Rules to say that a player must search for their ball. However, if the original ball is found on the course before the player has played their next stroke with the provisional ball they have to continue play with it, even if it is unplayable. (Rule 27-2c). If they do deem their original ball unplayable they are penalised one stroke and must choose one of the three relief options available under Rule 28. Q. According to Rule 27, if a player hits his tee shot into the woods and tees up and plays another ball without announcing it as a provisional ball, the second ball becomes the ball in play and the original ball is lost. In such a case, is the player precluded from searching for his original ball? A. No, the player is not but the player may not play the ball if he finds it and must not unduly delay play. (When in a situation of a possible lost ball you should announce to your playing partners that you intend to play a provisional ball)
