Lake Charles Yacht Club The Tacking Times Newsletter THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE LAKE CHARLES YACHT CLUB March 2018 2018 Board members Commodore: Ralph Unglaube Rear Commodore: Guy Richards Vice Commodore: John Kalna Treasurer: Sheron Faulk Secretary: Laura Gayfield Newsletter: Philippe Girard Race: James Latour Harbor: Scott Cesar Grounds: David Sargent Social: Summer Rice News The board met on 13 March 2018. Here are highlights: From Summer Rice: The crawfish social will be on Saturday, 14 Apr. $10 for 5 lbs. Members A-K bring fruit and desserts, L-Z appetizers and sides. BYOB. James Latour sent an updated racing schedule for 2018 (see p. 2). The Wednesday series still starts on 21 March, but the championship regatta was moved from 7 to 14 April to avoid competing with the Lake Arthur crawfish regatta. The format for the championship regatta will be unusual: members are encouraged to sail the club SunFish or bring their own (if we don t have enough boats, preference will be given to the sailors who ranked highest in last year s races). People can also sail other classes on the side (especially similar boats like Lasers), but the preference is for a one-design class. Scott Cesar: the renovation of the piers is almost done. The company rebuilt 8 piers and added 10 more. If you know reliable people who need a slip for their boat, pass the word around: the club is always looking for paying members! See photos p. 5 Ralph Unglaube: plans for the renovation of the upstairs of the clubhouse are underway. They include a new bar and new flooring. Members picked a color scheme at the banquet. Ralph ordered a large custom-made BBQ pit for downstairs. He also wants to thank the many people who showed up for the work party on 10 March. The board is also considering burying the overhead lines, for esthetic reasons and for safety. We re looking at different options and costs right now. The board will experiment for 1 month with a joint texting system to help publicize events at the club. In the next few weeks, if you don t get messages that others are getting, contact Summer Rice to be placed on the calling list (text or phone message). Also contact Summer if you get too many messages on your phone and you want to be taken off the list Please remember to clean up the kitchen after yourself; and to be courteous to all members when at the club (friendly conversations, no excessive drinking) The sailing lessons are scheduled for 4-8 June from 5:30-7:30 daily. Volunteer instructors are needed. Scot Louviere offered to help fix up the SunFish (thanks). The Texas 4000 cyclists will stop by the club on 8 June. 3 On the water: March Winds Regatta (10 March 2018) The March winds regatta lived up to its name: it was windy out there! The weather was pleasant in the morning for the beautification work party (many thanks to those who participated). Then it was briefly rainy and calm over lunch, after which the wind picked up during the 3 afternoon races. Congrats to James Latour (with his new hulls) and Al Rees (on his FS) for winning the catamaran / monohull classes. I finished last but I got to enjoy a great afternoon on the water with my daughter Hélène. We finished the day with a chicken BBQ organized by Ralph and Mary Unglaube.

On the water: awards banquet (15 Feb.) Thanks to Summer Rice for organizing the event. The board gave out awards to the most active sailors (Alex was our youngest recipient), as well as to club members who went above and beyond to help, such as Mary Unglaube (below, right). 6
