Data Analysis & Probability Name: Date: Hour: DO YOU KNOW WHO THE BEST BASEBALL HITTER OF ALL TIMES IS?...YOUR JOB IS TO FIND OUT. This activity will find the greatest baseball hitter of all time. You will search the web for statistical data. From this data, you will determine the best ten years for various famous baseball hitters. Based upon your statistical information you will come to a conclusion, WHO IS THE BEST BASEBALL HITTER OF ALL TIME? TASK As a statistician you have been ask to find the greatest baseball hitter of all time. This selection must be based upon factual statistical information. The class will be divided into five groups. Each group will investigate and calculate a specific variable for a selected group of hitters. You will be only using data from the best ten years of their career. Group One will find the average number home runs - HR (When a play can circle the bases and make it home in one play) for each of the hitters. Group Two will find the average runs batted in for these players. Group Three will find each player s mean batting average - BA (The number of hits divided by the number of times at bat). Group Four will find the average number of hits H (When the ball is hit and the play makes it safely to first base). Group Five will find the sample standard deviation for the home runs of each player. All groups will display their findings in a graphical representation. CONCLUSION: Using statistical evidence from all five groups, the class will decide who is the best baseball hitter of all time. Group 1 AVERAGE OF HOME RUNS (HR) Description: You are a statistician and have been asked to find the average number of home runs for each of the following great hitters. Use data from the 10 seasons they had the highest number of home runs. - Create a pie chart using each player s average number of home runs.

Group 2 AVERAGE NUMBER OF RUNS BATTED IN (RBI) Description: You are a statistician and have been asked to find the average number of RBI s for each of the following great hitters. Use data from the 10 seasons they had the highest number of runs batted in. - Create a pie chart using each player s average number of RBIs.

Group 3 MEAN BATTING AVERAGE (BA) Description: You are a statistician and have been asked to find the mean batting average for each of the following great hitters. Use data from the 10 seasons they had the highest batting average. - Create a pie chart using each player s average batting average.

Group 4 MEAN NUMBER OF HITS (H) Description: You are a statistician and have been asked to find the mean number of hits for each of the following great hitters. Use data from the 10 seasons they had the highest number of hits. - Create a pie chart using each player s average number of hits.

Group 5 SAMPLE STANDARD DEVIATION for NUMBER OF HOME RUNS (HR) Description: You are a statistician and have been asked to find the sample standard deviation of the number of home runs for each of the following great hitters. Use data from the 10 seasons they had the highest number of home runs. - Create a histogram for each player that includes the 10 years worth of data for number of home runs. - Create a pie chart using each player s sample standard deviation.
