Editorial cont - Old Carey's twenty-seven point win over Old Ivanhoe had a two-fold result It allowed them to move off the bottom rung at last and virtually ended Ivanhoe's hopes of making the final four - they are, now two games out The Carey-Kew clash today should provide some excitement as the victor will have the better chance of avoiding relegation St Kilda returned to the winning list with a`bang' - recording, an eightyeight point win over Old Xaverians who could not match them at any stage Melbourne High Old Boys (D Section) provided the upset of the day when they held Section leader Old Camberwell goal-less throughout to win by eight goals The Camberwell forwards will be out to avenge this humiliation today when they travel to Heatherton Country Colleges kept their finals chances glimmering when they defeated State Bank by six goals (The defeat also cost State Bank their place in the four ) West Brunswick returned to the winning list after a long run of `outs' when they accounted for University High by thirty-one points St Kevin's strengthened their place in the four when they scored by fourteen points over Elsternwick, who have become isolated in ninth spot Power House led comfortably all day over Heatherton and went on to score by five goals, thereby consolidating their hold-on the number two position E Section's Old Geelong moved into third place when they won by eighty-six points over A NZ Bank, after leading all day Late starters La Trobe are now seventh following their nine point win over North Brunswick, who have not regained their earlier form St Bede's retained the top place when they led Old Mentonians for most of the day and won by forty points They are still closely pressed by Bulleen- Templestowe who kept in touch by scoring over Beverley Hills (then third now fourth) AM P kept their hopes for the four alive when they defeated Brunswick by ten goals and so moved into fifth spot out on percentage only Bulleen United staged the F Section upset when they bettered previously undefeated Thornbury by two goals They led all day to do so Therry moved two games clear in fourth position when they defeated Footscray (by six goals) and University Reds accounted for National Bank by twelve goals The Reds have improved recently - but have left their run too late it appears Clayton recorded their second win when they defeated Monash Whites again, this time by thirty-four points Junior Section One results saw North Old Boys again victorious, this time over Monash University The margin of defeat cost Monash their place in the four Hampton Rovers 'defeated Old Scotch by two points The closeness allowed Scotch to move into the four (replacing Monash) Ivanhoe and University Blues changed places when the Blues went down to Ivanhoe by thirty-seven points University Blacks kept their hopes of remaining in Junior One when they accounted for St Bernard's (eighth) by - five goals, thus levelling their respective match points Ormond moved into sixth place when they scored handsomely over Geelong - despite a slow beginning De La Salle's big ~ win over West Brunswick in Junior Two, together with Coburg's defeat of Old Haileybury, sees De La Salle back on top - a game clear Kew stayed with Coburg when they led Fawkner comfortably all day to record a seventeen and a half goal win over Fawkner Old Paradians' seven goals in the first quarter kicked them off towards their one hundred point victory over Caulfield, whilst Melbourne High scored seven goals in the second quarter (and none in the last!) on the way to their, twenty-seven point win over Therry Page 4 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - JULY 1, 1978 "PREVIEWING TODAY'S GA MES A SECTIO N Your A Grade tipster made a bold showing with 4 winners and a draw in last week's round as the season starts to really hot up Uni Blues remain safe and secure perched on top of the ladder - three wins clear of their nearest rival, whilst the other occupants of the Four are right under the hammer from the in-form Ormond and North O B Uni Blacks produced a marked improvement in form to tie with last year's premiers De La Salle In fact, only poor kicking deprived the Blacks of victory Uni Blues continued on their winning way with a strong win over improved Caulfield Grammarians Ivanhoe accounted for Marceltin in what was a hard fought game North O B Inflicted a large defeat upon the out-of-form St Bernard's who are now facing relegation Ormond who, with North O B, are on the edge of the Four, demolished Old Scotch, who have now lost three games in a row This week's round produces two very interesting clashes, the first being between Uni Blues and Ormond The Blues, on top of the ladder and Ormond just outside the Four Bruce Bourne, Shane Dove and Chisholm are in great form for the "Monds" and shall keep the Blues under continual pressure The Blues have the advantage of their home ground which star forward Mick Sleeman plays ike a treat Both sides are high marking and fast but I feel that Ormond has more to gain with a win in this match and I'm tipping them to topple the Blues The other great match will be between Old Scotch Collegians and Nort h Old Boys Scotch coach, Laurie Aghan, will be desperate to arrest his team's slide which is placing their position in the Four in jeopardy Scotch's defence is proving vulnerable and North have brilliant forwards in O'Connor and Sheales who will take advantage of any slackness in the defenders I believe North will inflict yet another defeat on Old Scotch - to make the tussle for the Final Four more interesting Marcellin and Uni Blacks meet at Marcellin in what will be a vital match with respect to the relegation of either team at the end of the season Uni Blacks showed improved form against Da La Salle whilst Marcellin battled very hard against Ivanhoe ' I fancy Uni Blacks improved form will enable them to carry the day against spirited opposition from Marcellin St Bernard's O C meet Ivanhoe at home, with relegation to "B" grade staring them in the face after almost a decade in "A" grade On the other hand, Ivanhoe, up from "B" division and in the Four, are going from strength to strength Sheppard has been in good form and this has given them added bite However, Ivanhoe's experience down at the Saint's oval is limited and I pick St Bernard's to overthrow them on Saturday A vital clash for De La Salle takes place against Caulfield Grammarians - De La Salle's form has been very patchy over recent weeks and some of their star Players have suffered a let-down since the Interstate game They realise that a loss this week could have them out of the Four and this is sure to spur them on to better will o believe their defeat Caulfield, whoh h a have als last two games My tips are Ormond, North OB, Unl St Bernard's and De La Blacks, ARNOLD Salle - MICHAEL B SECTIO N Another round gone and Old Melburnians stand out proudly as the only unbeaten team in the Senior competition Today they journey out to Bundoora to tackle Old Paradians This could be a danger game for O M's If they don't approach this game in the right frame of mind the Paradians will get to them On their own ground Old Paradians are a real handful for any team Everyone is waiting for Old Melburnians to put in that bad one I don't believe this will happen There are too many good players in their team to all fail on the one day If they are to be beaten it will be by a team that can out-run them and keep moving the ball to -limit OM's scoring chances I doubt if Paradians can play this type of game well enough to win, so I will go for Old Metburnians to continue their unbeaten run Fawkner meet Monash Blues at the Mutton Reserve, Fawkner The Fawkner boys went down to O M 's last week but they must have played well if the scores are any indication Monash had a good win over Old Haileybury, so this should be a keen battle I keep referring to the big advantage some clubs have by playing on their own ground Fawkner is one such club I believe their game has lifted over the last few weeks and with their ground giving them an edge I will tip Fawkner to win the AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - PREVIEWS (cont ) Coburg play host 'to Old Trinity This game is vital to both clubs They will be desperate for 'a win to get themselves moving up the ladder If Coburg have been able to get their injured players fit again over the bye weekend, It could be just the lift they need to tip the scales in their favour Both teams have to put in a bit more each week if they wish to keep taking their place In the winners' circle I think Coburg can find that desperation needed to win this one Old Haileybu ry meet Parkside at Keysborough in what should be another keen struggle The home team, after two defeats in a row will give everything to stop the slide Parkside again adjusted to the very poor condition of their ground to score a good win over Collegians I am convinced Parkside's game will be better suited to good conditions so their journey to Keysborough should be a welcome trip Haileybury play a similar run-on style of football so it should be a good game to see I'll stay with the in-form team and go for Parkside to take this one out Collegians are making use of the Bye to have a practice match against Therry C CO B who have the Bye in "F" Grade My tip is don't take Therry too lightly You will be surprised at the top quality football they play in "F" Troop Selections: Old Melburnians, Fawkner, Coburg, Par4cside - BRIAN LAUDER C SECTIO N Well, I have started the second half of the season more or less sensationally - 5 winners However, I can't see myself maintaining this standard after glancing at today's draw Match-of-the-day is between top team St Kilda and up-and-coming Geelong Geelong rarely play particularly well at St Kilda, however, it is playing better now than its form during recent visits This year Geelong has handled the heavy grounds better than most Geelong sides that I recall St Kilda's ground will be heavy and this should not worry Geelong as much as in the past I thought Geelong should have beaten St Kilda at Queen's Park early in the year; now it is playing better my bias leans towards it to beat the top side today Old Xaverians and Old Brighton are at the crossroads (In fact, Old Brighton seem to be permanently there) Both must win to keep alive chances of playing in the Finals Old Brighton are in the horrors, while Old Xav's could not match St Kilda last week However, Brighton, even at the beach, will not provide similar opposition and I expect Old Xaverians to notch a handy win to keep them near the Four Old Ivanhoe have slipped and will not be strong enough to test mighty A J A X, which has not put a foot wrong for weeks Hampton Rovers contested every Inch of the way last week, but will find Candy and Bromley too hot handle out at Alphington Alphington will win and strengthen their hold on that keenly countered fourth place Old Carey and Kew should be a clash full of entertainment Neither team intends to be relegated, so today's situation spells desperation Kew did well against Alphington last week and appear to be on the improve Old Carey have won two in a row and with only pick Frankly, I haven't a clue who will win -- I would prefer to punt on a draw, but I must be positive and will favour Kew because they are playing at home Selections : Geelong, Old Xaverians, AJA X, Alphington, Kew - JIM FIDGE D SECTIO N Last week's games added further interest to the competition Again the top four changed composition Congratulations to Melbourne High School Old Boys on their meritorious victory which enabled them to move into fourth place Country Colleges journey across Royal Park to meet University High School Old Boys Percentage may prove vital to the Colleges' quest of the Finals Providing Ken Vipond can generate drive and with Maurice Mahony doing damage around the packs, Larry Coates could manage a bag of goals University High will be anxious to recapture its moment of glory, but I cannot see the home side taking the points Disappointing Heatherton await Old Camberwell whose first goal will doubtlessly raise a hearty cheer Peter Hutchinson would have had a parched throat after last week's debacle Heatherton have not adjusted to D Section and despite good play by the Kiltens, Banning and Meeking, the team is not winning matches Old Camberwell should take the points today Memo : Heatherton - What about your team list? Two of the lower ranked sides clash at Elsternwick when West Brunswick visit The "Magpies" have slipped after a conspicuous start to the season Elsternwick, according to my reliable informants, are a talented side who do not produce results Today will be their day for a victory Giant killers Melbourne High School Old Boys return home to await St Kevin's A final position could reward the winner The sides are fairly evenly matched on the season's performance St Kevin's forwards have been slightly more active To balance this, Melbourne High have the home ground advantage This factor, coupled with St Kevin's failure to play out a full game, prompts me to select Melbourne High School Old Boys to win the game PREVIEWS (cont ) State Bank, now out of the top Four, await power House in a game between Albert Park :cnants Power House suffered eight injuries in their big victory over Country Colleges and their players will be fitter than they were against Heatherton The Bankers' assets gain value at home Despite their monopoly of Oval 4, I believe the Bankers will find a scoreboard deficit at the end of today's game Power House, a big, strong and mobile side will prove too talented for State Bank Selections : Count ry Colleges, Old Camberviell Grammarians, Elstemwick, Melbourne High School Old Boys, Power House May I conclude with a big plea to the five home sides? Please phone your scores promptly tcjay - NORM NUGENT My tipping is improving, but so are my co-tipsters I have missed tipping the field by 4 points on one occasion, but made up for it last week by recording a perfect score Brunswick are struggling to score their second win for the season (the first being against AN Z Bank) and today encounter second placed Bulleen-Templestowe Brunswick have the home ground advantage but, on form, t must say that the visitors will prove too strong today Old Geelong have assured me they are going to be the second team to get a victory over the leaders, St Bede's If they can maintain the form they have shown the last three weeks they should be able to do it AMP are very inconsistent and North Brunswick have not been ve ry kind to me, but this week I will rely on North Brunswick to get me the points AN Z Bank have the advantage of home ground but will not be strong enough for La Trobe Blacks Beverley Hills dowt like me tipping them for a victory but on their home ground with the usual heavy going, they should get a comfortable win Selections : Bulleen-Templestowe, Old Geelong, North Brunswick, La Trobe Blacks, Beverley Hills - NUGGET STEPHENS F SECTIO N Thornbury, at home to Uni Reds, could be a closer contest than the first time round The Reds have won a couple of games and the Berries are shy of a few good players, but the odds about the Reds are still fairly long, so I'll pick the Berries Monash Whites will be hosts to the Commonwealth Bank, who will be keen to do something constructive about their percentage which, at the moment, will prevent them from improving on third place The Bankers have a couple of hard matches following and a handsome margin over the Whites would be very handy National Bank are the roughies for a place in the Finals and, a win against Clayton is essential Fluff this and they might as well surrender and go surfing for the rest of the season I think they have enough interest and are big enough to cope Footscray had a close encounter with Bulleen United earlier in the season and this game could be another good match Bulleen play a good type of attacking football right from the back line and like plenty of space to operate in They have a real chance of getting out of F Section this year and that is the hard part of Amateur football Selections : Thornbury, Commonwealth Bank, National Bank, Butleen United Therry C C O B have a chance to work on those bulges I mentioned a few weeks back - SYD WHITFIELD JUNIOR 1 SECTIO N An interesting round of matches last week saw North confirm their position at hot favourites for the flag with a big win over Monash, while Ivanhoe have emerged as the main threat after a good win, their sixth in a row, over Blues Today Blues should regain some of their confidence with a win over Geelong The Blues high hopes for another Junior premiership received a setback last week at Ivanhoe where they folded after half time They have a very talented side, but are losing concentration However, they should be too good for Geelong No rth crushed Monash last week and are carrying all before them at the moment Hampton Rovers also had a good win last week and will be desperate to keep their finals chances alive with a win over the top side It will be a good battle but I can't see the Rovers getting up St Bernard's hit rock bottom last week and today have to come up against Ivanhoe, whose form over recent weeks cannot be faulted They have a big, strong side and will be after a percentage booster out at Essendon today Looking at their respective positions on the ladder, Scotch should have an easy win over University Blacks at Scotch today However, Scotch's form over the past few weeks has fallen away badly, while the Blacks, after a disastrous start to the season, are now combining well and I think they might surprise the home team Monash have been up and down like yo-yos this season, so who knows what will happen when they visit Ormond today Ormond, fresh from a good win last week, must win today to stay in the race while Monash badly need to Page 6 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - JULY 1, 1978 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - JULY 1, 1978 Page 7
