Big Green Quick Game Notes This weekend marks the first ECAC Hockey Tournament series between those two programs The Big Green and Saints played three times this season with each winning once on the road, while tying in a nonconference game on Dec. 31 (Ledyard Classic Championship, SLU won shotout, 3-2) Dartmouth has won its last three games in Canton dating back three years (Last loss: February, 21, 2009 - L, 7-2) Dartmouth was 3-2 in the 2011 postseason en route to a third-place finish in Atlantic City (Harvard, Cornell, Colgate) THIS WEEKEND Dartmouth and St. Lawrence will meet in the first round of the ECAC Hockey Tournament this weekend in Canton N.Y. with the Big Green earning the No. 9 seed and traveling to take on the No. 8 Saints. HOW WE GOT HERE Dartmouth earned the No. 9 seed in this year s tournament with 19 points (8-11-3) after losing to St. Lawrence, 3-1, Saturday night in the regular season finale. The No. 8 Saints earned the higher seed with the two-goal win at Thompson in the crucial game to determine home ice between the two teams this weekend. AGAINST THE SAINTS THIS SEASON These two programs met three times during the regular season with each claiming a 3-1 road victory in conference match-ups (Nov. 18 and Feb. 25). The nonconference contest was the title game of the Ledyard Classic on Dec. 31 in Hanover. Officially a 2-2 tie by NCAA standards, the Saints won the game in a shootout, 3-2. AGAINST ONE TEAM In the 106 seasons of Dartmouth hockey, the Big Green has played another opponent six times in one campaign just once (Vermont, 2004-05). If this weekend s playoff series goes three games, the team will match that total against the Saints this year (1-1-1). POSTSEASON SAINTS In the long and storied history between both of these programs, this weekend will mark the first time that they have played one another in a postseason series. Twice before they have met as two of the final four ECAC Hockey teams remaining, playing in the semifinals in 2001 (SLU, 2-0) and again in the consolation game in 2007 (SLU, 5-2). Dartmouth has yet to beat St. Lawrence in the postseason. LAST POSTSEASON Dartmouth reached Atlantic City last season and the league s final four after knocking off Harvard in a three-game series in the quarterfinals. Finishing with the No. 3 seed and a bye into the second round of the league s playoffs, Dartmouth played host to Harvard March 11-13 at Thompson Arena. Tied 1-1 headed into the third period, Dartmouth scored three times in the final period, including two from then-freshman Matt Lindblad to move on to the semifinals. Once they reached Atlantic City, the Big Green were bounced by Cornell, 3-0, in the semifinals before taking out Colgate, 5-3, in the Consolation Game. SIX TIMES SWEETER Against Clarkson, Dartmouth matched its season-best scoring output with six goals. Aided by four first-period goals, the Big Green held on late in regulation, surviving a furious comeback bid by the Golden Knights to take the game, 6-4. ROOKIE OF THE MONTH Brandon McNally (Saugus, Mass.) was named the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month for February as voted on by representatives from around the league. McNally scored six goals in the final six games of the season for Dartmouth, including a two-goal game against Clarkson. That stretch helped the first-year wing finish the regular season as the conference s leader in goals scored by a freshman this season with all 10 of his markers coming against ECAC Hockey foes. ECAC Hockey Tournament STRONG ROOKIE CLASS A league-best seven Dartmouth freshmen had points this season in league games. Those seven players also helped make up the top scoring freshman class in the conference with 25 in 2011-12. In all, the Big Green rookies combined to score 61 total points (25g/36a), which is nearly 24 points better than the league average (37.33) for the 12 teams freshmen classes. CLASSIC PASSER With three assists this past weekend, senior Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) moved all alone into eight all-time at Dartmouth with 78 for his career. Jones s two assists Friday against Clarkson helped him leap Bill Kelleher 97 and Michael Turner 72 who each had 76 during their careers. Dennis Murphy 80 and Mike Ouellette 06 are tied for sixth with 80 apiece and are next in line for Jones. Tournament competition features four first-round series conducted at on-campus sites Friday-Sunday, March 2-4; four quarterfinals series at on-campus sites Friday-Sunday, March 9-11; and the championship semifinals, third-place and championship games March 16-17 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The first-round and quarterfinals series are best-of-three games. The top four seeds (Union, Cornell, Harvard, and Colgate) will receive first-round byes. In 23 seasons as a head coach, including the last 14 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11, while several more played in other professional leagues such as the AHL. Gaudet returned to Dartmouth in 1997 after nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench. In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J. At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from the 2000-01 season to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team s fifth consecutive campaign above.500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 and has a Dartmouth record of 206-196-50. Gaudet s career coaching record stands at a respectable 299-338-81. The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year award. Gaudet has now had two Ivy League players of the year Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction. Gaudet took over Brown s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in 89 to eighth in 90 and 91, fifth in 92, third in 93, fourth in 94 and all the way to second in 95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in 01, third in 05 and was tied for first in 2006-07. ECAC Hockey First Round at St. Lawrence March 2-4, 2012 Head Coach Bob Gaudet 81 15th During Gaudet s time at Brown, the Bears were crowned Ivy League champions twice (1991 and 1995) and, in 1993, made the school s first NCAA appearance since 1976. In both 1993 and 1995, he was a finalist for Division I Coach of the Year. He was named ECAC Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading Brown to a secondplace finish in the league, just one-and-ahalf games behind first-place Clarkson. The Bears also spent much of the year in and out of the top 10 in the national polls. Gaudet became head coach of the Bears in 1988 following a five-year tenure as an assistant coach with the Big Green. He assisted in all aspects at Dartmouth under head coaches George Crowe and Brian Mason, while coordinating recruiting efforts and serving as varsity goaltender coach. In addition, he directed the junior varsity program his first season in Hanover. Gaudet graduated in 1981 with a degree in visual arts after four productive seasons for the Big Green hockey team. In 1979 and 1980, Gaudet led the team to Ivy League titles and appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was a recipient of the Philip D. McInnis Award for spirit, loyalty and dedication to Dartmouth ice hockey. In 76 career games, he made a school-record 2,129 saves, while allowing only 299 goals for a 4.00 career goals-against average and an.877 save percentage. He had his most successful campaign as a sophomore when he recorded two of his four-career shutouts to go along with a 3.03 goalsagainst average. He was First Team All-Ivy in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and was a two-time recipient of the Canterbury Society Award for the best Ivy League goalie. Following graduation, Gaudet signed a free-agent contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. He played for minor league affiliates of Winnipeg in the CHL and IHL for one year before a knee injury cut short his promising career. In the summer of 1990, Gaudet served as the assistant coach of the East team in the Olympic Sports Festival, held in Minneapolis. In 1994, he served again as head coach of the East team, and also coached the East All-Star Team in the East-West Shrine College Hockey Classic. Gaudet spent the summer of 1998 behind the bench of the New England Select 16-Team at USA Hockey s Summer Festival in Ann Arbor, Mich. Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim will be competing as a senior on this year s team. THREE-POINT PERIODS Freshmen Tyler Sikura (Aurora, Ontario) and Eric Neiley (Warminster, Pa.) each recorded three points in the first period against Clarkson as part of a four-goal outburst by the team. Both Sikura and Neiley had a goal and two assists in the opening period. Neiley matched his career high with three points, while Sikura eclipsed his previous best mark of two points in a contest (three times). LINDBLAD BLENDS IN Overshadowed by Neiley and Sikura s threepoint night and McNally s two goals, sophomore Matt Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) scored once and assisted on another in the first period Friday against Clarkson. The second-year forward scored the opening tally 5:24 into the game before helping to set up Neiley with the second of the night just 5:07 later. FROM INSURANCE TO WINNER Connor Goggin s (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) goal from the point 11:14 into the third period gave Dartmouth a 5-2 lead, giving them a bit more breathing room after Clarkson scored twice in the second. That goal quickly turned from the insurance marker to the game winner after the visitors scored twice in 26 seconds soon after to make it a one-goal game late in regulation. Goggin now ranks second on the team with two game winners this season. SOPHOMORE SLUMPS ARE FOR SLACKERS Lindblad and fellow sophomore Eric Robinson (Foxboro, Mass.) proved that the sophomore slump doesn t always apply. Lindblad finished the season the team s leader in assists (15), while Robinson led the team in goals (12) and was tied with Jones for the team lead in scoring (23). WEEKEND TENDERS Playing in their final home weekend of their careers, head coach Bob Gaudet split time in goal over the two games between senior James Mello (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Jody O Neill (Nepean, Ontario). Mello stopped 35 shots, allowed four goals and earned the win over Clarkson, while O Neill stopped 21 and allowed just two, but was saddled with the loss against the Saints the following night. SAY GOODBYE SENIORS With the loss against St. Lawrence guaranteeing the Saints home ice in the first round, Saturday night marked the final game at Thompson Arena in the careers of 10 members of this year s senior class, the largest in the league. SCHUSS IN THE LINEUP Senior Kyle Schussler (Winnipeg, Manitoba) made his season debut in the Dartmouth lineup Friday against Clarkson. It was the first time Schussler had seen game action since his sophomore year and marked just the fourth game of his career. He began the night taking a cross-checking penalty on his first shift just 2:46 into the game. However, Schussler finished the night strong with two big open-ice hits before blocking a shot from the point the next evening against SLU. A true defenseman, Schussler played wing on the fourth line both nights. OH, THE DIFFERENCE A TIE MAKES Dartmouth and Harvard finished the regular season with the same number of victories against ECAC Hockey foes (8). However, Harvard (8-5-9) finished third in the league standings and earned a firstround bye on the strength of tying a league record for ties in a single season with nine. Seven teams had more wins this season than the Crimson, but five of those teams are behind them in the standings due to the draws. CHANCES WITH THE PP Dartmouth finishes the season as the lone team in Division I (58 programs) to not have at least 100 power plays this season. The Big Green were awarded the manadvantage just 98 times all season, failing to reach triple digits. Bemidji State s 107 opportunities rank as the second fewest in the nation this season. www.dartmouthsports.com National Polls USCHO.com Division I Poll (Feb. 27) Rk.Team Record Pts. Against the Bulldogs, Robinson assisted on Doug Jones thirdperiod goal; the 100th point of the senior s career. He followed that with a three-point night at Brown, setting a new career high. Scoring twice in the first ten minutes of the game, Robinson again assisted on a Jones tally in the third. Jones had previously scored two goals in a game earlier this season at Vermont on Nov. 27. FINALLY SNAPPED Jones eighth goal of the season came 10:23 into the third on a long wrister from the high slot and snapped a five-game scoring drought. It was the 100th point of Jones career, making him the 36th player in program history to reach the century mark. Jones added a goal and an assist at Brown for 102 points after the weekend to sit tied for 32nd all-time at Dartmouth. His 75 career assists rank 10th. SO LONG SKID The win in Providence on Feb. 18 snapped a seven-game winless skid (0-5-2) for the Big Green. Taking an early 2-0 lead, Robinson s second of the night on a redirect out front at 9:44 of the first proved to be the winner. It was the longest stretch without a win for Dartmouth since opening the 2009-10 season at 0-7-0. NOT HIS FIRST RODEO Senior netminder Jody O Neill stepped up to help Dartmouth snap its winless skid with a 34-save performance at Brown Saturday night. Taking a shutout into the third period, O Neill finished the night allowing just one goal, while picking up his second win of the year (2-3-2). It was the third time in seven starts this season that O Neill turned aside 30 or more shots. LOVING THE LIGHTS In both nationally-televised games this season, freshman Brandon McNally (Saugus, Mass.) has found the back of the net. Against RPI on Jan. 6, the winger scored the first non-empty-net marker of his career, while potting the seventh of the season at Yale. Both games were the NBC Sports Network game of the week and broadcast across the country. LEE JOINS THE GROUP At Ingalls Rink on Feb. 17, Paul Lee became the fifth senior this season to reach 100 games played in a Dartmouth uniform. Lee made a nice backhanded pass from the side of the net to McNally to set up the first Big Green score of the night. He was originally given an assist on Connor Goggin s goal, but had it taken away upon video review, denying Lee the first two-point game of Multiple-Point Games 2-Pt. 3-Pt. 4-Pt. 5-Pt. his career in his 100th game played. The senior made up for it the following night with a second-period goal at Brown on a deflection in the slot to give his team a 3-0 lead. PINKSTON S POINTS Freshman defender Rick Pinkston (Trenton, Mich.) picked up two assists at Brown for the first multi-point game of his collegiate career. Pinkston had a helper on the opening Robinson tally before his shot from the point in the second period was redirected by Brown s Mike Clemente in goal by Lee for his second assist of the evening. Pinkston now has one goal and four assists and ranks third on the team in scoring by a defenseman. GOGGIN S GOAL Defender and senior assistant captain Connor Goggin jumped up in the rush at Yale late in the second period with McNally and Lee to start an odd-man rush. A give-and-go passing play with the freshman helped Goggin get the puck as the third man high and put a nice move to juke the goalie out of position and tie the game at 2-2. The goal was his fourth of the season, tying his career high set last year. His 0.46 points per game rank 22nd among defensemen in ECAC Hockey this season. 121 MEANS 24TH Against Brown, Jones pulled the Dartmouth sweater over his head for the 121st time since coming to Hanover in 2008-09. That figure ranked 24th all time in program history. Prior to 2011-12, just 75 players had ever played in at least 100 career games at Dartmouth. This season, Jones (121), Connor Goggin (117), Jim Gaudet (113), Nick Walsh (105) and Lee (101) have all joined that exclusive club. EIGHT IS ENOUGH Robinson s second goal of the night at Meehan Auditorium proved to be the eventual game winner as the Big Green held on, 4-1. Despite leading the team in goals with 12 this season, that was the first game-winning goal of the year and just the second of his career. In all, eight players have scored winners in 2011-12 for Dartmouth, with freshman Tyler Sikura s three leading the way. McNALLY S TALLIES Freshman Brandon McNally provided the only Dartmouth offense against the Dutchmen and Engineers. The first-year winger netted the only goal of each game, scoring both in the second period on Friday and Saturday nights. L, 3-1 * - Ledyard Classic Championship - SLU wins SO, 3-2 www.dartmouthsports.com WALTER BROWN AWARD Team captain and junior defenseman Mike Keenan (South Weymouth, Mass.) was named to the list of 21 semifinalists for the 60th Walter Brown Award, presented annually to the top American-born collegiate player in New England. Joining Keenan on the list of 21 was Yale s Andrew Miller and Brian O Neill, as well as Brown s Clemente from this weekend s opponents. SEVEN D For just the second time this season, Dartmouth dressed seven defensemen for a game when head coach Bob Gaudet inserted freshman Andy Simpson (Chesterfield, Mo.) back into the lineup against RPI. Simpson rotated through several partners during the game, but logged the most time with Keenan. The other instance when the Big Green had seven D-men dressed came at Union on Jan. 7 when senior Dan Nycholat (Calgary, Alberta) was added, but played several shifts on the team s fourth forward line. A COUPLE OF PIMS Dartmouth was called for just seven penalties against the Dutchmen and Engineers, including just two against Union. Those seven combined penalties are tied for the second fewest in a two-game stretch this season. Against Harvard and Vermont on Nov. 25 and 27, Dartmouth was called for just six infractions (2 vs. Harvard, 4 at Vermont) BACK-TO-BACK FRESHMAN McNally s two goals against Union and RPI marked the fourth time in 2011-12 that a Big Green freshman found the back of the net in consecutive games. Tyler Sikura (Aurora, Ontario) has accomplished the feat twice against Cornell (Nov. 12) and St. Lawrence (Nov. 18) as well as against Brown and Yale last time out (Jan. 27-28). Jesse Beamish (Mississauga, Ontario) also scored in back-to-back games, albeit 19 days apart in doing so against Sacred Heart (Dec. 11) and Holy Cross (Dec. 30). 11
