Alumni! See You 'Bck to GFC on Nov. 11 GEORGE FOX COLLEGE, NEWBERG, OREGON Vol. 62, No. 3 WORLD AFFAIRS By Prof. Mckey Hill The fct tht two men sought to kill President Trumn, if not directly connected with foreign ffirs, will in the long run hve some repercussions on the world scene. But if it is proven tht there is foreign connection in the ttempted sssintion, the wr frme of mind wil be intensified. There hs been noticble stiffening of the North Koren resistnce s the UN forces hve driven nerer the Mnchurin border. The Communists hve more to lose thn, stretch of rough mountins if the reminder of Koren territory flls under n nti-communist power. The industril economy of Mnchuri is lrgely dependnt for its electricl power upon the output of the electricl power plnts in this section. Thus, whoever holds ll of Kore will control strtegic key to the most importnt industril centers of Red Chin. Smll wonder tht Bed Chin is doing ll she cn, short of direct intervention, to keep this re out of the UN hnds. This ction hs hd most disturbing effect upon the government of Indi. Indi hs tried to sit on the fence nd close her eyes to the ggressive nture of Communism, but this thret to Indi is pprent. Tibet could prove mens of Communist militry penetrtion into Indi. Thus tension grows between Indi nd Chin. Russi is fighting bitterly the move to hve Secretry Generl of the UN Lie's term of office continued. She feels tht Mr. Lie hs fvored the U.S. in determining UN policy too much. Perhps the fct tht Russi hd expected n esy victory in Kore nd Mr. Lie hd prt in sdly disppointing her cn explin this sudden cooling of Russion love for Mr. Lie. Anywy the U.S. is stnding stunchly for the continution of Mr. Lie's term. French fer of Germny hs stymied ction in the meetings of the twelve North Atlntic ntions. All except Frnce fvored the inclusion of Germn men in the1 militry forces rised to resist Communist ggression in Western Europe but she sid n emphtic "No!". Just when the world ttention is bout to be focused on the problems of reconstruction in Kore nd the UN will be forced to hold up to world scrutiny their policy there, comes the report of President Trumn commission investigting the Filipino sitution. Some time go request cme to the U.S. President from the President of the Philippine islnds tht he send such n investigting body to help strighten out the Filipino mess. Now with the report on the sordid conditions of things the United Sttes reports tht further id will be on condition tht reformtion will be mde. Grft in government officils must be eliminted. Lnd must be redistributed. Other mesures for the common good must be effected so tht the public confidence cn be ssured of fir del. The UN hs llowed Spin to become member of some of the subsidiry orgniztions of the UN. This is step in the direction of trying to clen Spin up by llowing her to move in respectble compny. You remember tht Spin, under the ledership of Frnco, bcked the Axes powers in World Wr II s much nd s long s she dred. This is kind of bck window entrnce into the house of the United Ntions. It derives its mening from the word sport, which in 144, when it entered the English lnguge, referred to plesnt pstimes. In its present brod use it is used to designte diversion, while with the rticle, '" sport" connotes one who is devoted to gyer plesures nd pstimes. Quite in contrst to this rther unplesnt designtion, sportsmnship mkes reference to tht which is consonnt with chrcter. The qulities which mke good sportsmnship should be exercised by everyone t ll times on the cmpus. The first of these qulities is sportsmn-like energy, which mens fighting hert, indiscourgbility. In college life energy is esily burned nd wsted leving the student worn nd ftigued, but without visble progress. This mens energy tht is poorly directed, nd when it is evidenced within student's record the school rmist, s does coch, pull the erring one bck to the bench for guidnce. Intelligence is the second qulity nd this mens energy t work solving problems. Sportsmnship demnds tht decisions must be mde for the benefit of the group; nd when intelligence is used to solve group problems it is ledership. Sportsmnship lso designtes responsibility. Something rests upon you, wht is it? Just s the thlete is responsible for upholding the honor of the tem, every student is responsible for the honor of the.cmpus, its cdemic stndrds nd- shring its socil responsibility.
