FRIDAY, SATURDAY, FEB. 27-28, 2009 NCAA QUALIFIERS With three weeks of action remaining, Oklahoma athletes have posted 19 provisional qualifying marks and five automatic qualifying marks. Long jumper Ti Anca Mock recorded the Sooners first automatic qualifying mark with a distance of 20-11.75 (6.39) in the event at the Razorback Invitational on Jan. 24. One week later Mock was joined on the list by triple jumper Shardae Boutte when he eclipsed the mark with a top jump of 53-0.25 (16.16) at the J.D. Martin Invitational on Jan. 31. Feb. 7 saw two Oklahoma athletes add their names to the automatic list with OU records as Leslie Cole did so in the 400-meter dash (52.33) followed by Jacob Boone in the men s mile (3:59.07). The latest came on Feb. 14 as Will Claye added his name to the automatic list with a 53-5.50 (16.29) triple jump. Boutte increased his distance the same day with a new mark of 53-5.75 (16.30). That changed Saturday at OU s final home indoor meet of the season, the Sooner Open II. Held inside the Mosier Indoor Facility, the meet saw Gill leap an NCAA provisional qualifying height of 7-1.75 (2.18) to win the event in his first action of the season in the event. Gill was one of five OU athletes to record NCAA qualifying marks Saturday as Amy Backel (shot put), Ti Anca Mock (triple jump), Mookie Salaam (60-meter dash) and K.P. Singh (weight throw) joined the jumper in securing marks needed to be considered for an at-large spot in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Saturday s meet marked the final weekend of action before the Big 12 Championships. Gill, who earned All-Big 12 honors in the event in 2008, jumped to No. 3 on the OU all-time performance list with his personal-best effort Saturday and moves to No. 4 in the Big 12 Conference. Gill was the only competitor remaining to attempt the winning height and needed just two attempts to clear the bar before attempting to break the Oklahoma program record of 7-2.75 (2.20) set by Greg Seay in 1982. Gill s teammate, freshman Alex Madkins, finished third in the event with a height of 6-6.75 (2.00). Mookie Salaam reeled off his second NCAA provisional qualifying time of the season one week after doing so in the 200-meter dash. The freshman from Edmond, Okla., finished first in the 60-meter dash with a personal-best time of 6.73. The time allowed Salaam to move up a spot on the OU performance list as the fourth-fastest 60 in program history and ranks fifth in the Big 12. Ti Anca Mock improved her provisional qualifying personal best in the triple jump with a top distance of 42-7.00 (12.98). Mock sits No. 2 on the OU performance list for the event and moves up to No. 4 in the Big 12 Conference with Saturday s performance. Mock finished second in the event behind OU alum and program record holder Toni Smith, who is preparing for the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships, with a jump of 44-6.00 (13.56). Mock also finished second in the women s 60-meter dash with a personal-best time of 7.48. The throws ring produced two provisional qualifying marks as Backel and Singh each accomplished the feat. Neither thrower improved on their season bests, however, as Backel took second with a throw of 50-4.75 (15.36) in the women s shot put and Singh took third with a distance of 64-0.25 (19.51) in the men s weight throw. OU freshman Karen Shump, competing unattached, took first in the women s shot put with a toss of 55-1.50 (16.80) as she prepares for the USA Indoor Championships. 1. Oregon...166.79 2. Quirke, who has dual Irish-American citizenship, broke the record on Feb. 7 at the Sooner Open I with a toss of 60-7.75 (18.48). The Oklahoma record holder in the women s weight throw, Mikaela Johansson extended her own program record in the event for the fifth straight week en route to winning the event with a top toss of 61-5.00 (18.72). Leslie Cole placed her name in the Oklahoma record books with a meet record time of 1:20.01 in the 600-yard run. With the performance, the senior holds on to her No. 1 ranking in the Big 12 Conference. Amanda Mayfield finished third with a time of 1:23.90. Madkins third-place finish in the high jump was not the freshman s only top-three finish as the Midwest City, Okla., native won the men s long jump with a season-best 23-7.25 (7.19). OU s Adrian Wiltshire finished second with a top jump of 23-6.25 (7.17). OU recorded a sweep in the high jump as senior Katherine Johnson finished first in the women s division by tying a season best with a height of 5-7.25 (1.71). Two freshman finished one-two in the women s 400 meter dash as Tiara Sims (56.52) and Andra Harris (56.95) finished in the top spots. Lindsay Pierson won the women s 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:03.80. COMING UP NEXT WEEK Next weekend will give athletes from around the country one final chance to post NCAA automatic and provisional qualifying marks as a number of NCAA Last Chance meets are held around the country. Oklahoma athletes are currently scheduled to attend the Arkansas Last Chance meet in Fayetteville, Ark. The last chance schedule is subject to change and any changes will be announced on SoonerSports.com Athletes reaching the NCAA automatic qualifying plateau will automatically qualify for the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 13-14, in College Station, Texas. A provisional mark is required for an athlete to be considered as an at-large candidate for the NCAA Championships. USTFCCCA DIVISION I TRACK AND FIELD RANKINGS MEN 1. Texas A&M...145.95 2. RECORDS FALLING The 2009 indoor season has been a successful one so far for the University of Oklahoma track and field team. One look at the OU record books proves the point. Five new program records have been posted in the 2009 indoor season, two on the men s side and three on the women s. Long jumper Ti Anca Mock started the trend at the Razorback Invitational when she finished first in the event with an NCAA automatic qualifying distance of 20-11.75 (6.39). Mock s distance topped Portia Nash s previous record of 20-7.25 (6.28). That same weekend back in Norman, both the men s and women s weight throw records went down at the Oklahoma Christian Invitational. Since that time, K.P. Singh and Mikaela Johansson have continued to extend their records in the event. Singh has since tossed the implement a distance of 67-0.50 (20.43) at the J.D. Martin Invitational on Jan. 31 while Johansson improved to 57-11.00 (17.65) at the Sooner Open I on Feb. 7. While Johansson was extending her mark in Norman, Jacob Boone was busy setting his new record in South Bend, Ind. The sophomore became the first-ever Sooner to run a sub-four-minute mile with a time of 3:59.07 at the Meyo Invitational to best teammmate Rob Sorrell s previous record in the mile.

Last week OU climbed 10 spots to its current ranking of No. 9 in the nation after a weekend of strong performances at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. The Sooners are led by three NCAA automatic qualifiers in triple jumpers Shardae Boutte and Will Claye and mile runner Jacob Boone. Boutte and Claye sit No. 2 and 3 in the triple jump, respectively, while Boone is No. 9 in the men s mile. The mile ranking is not the only top 10 for Boone as he appears at No. 7 as a member of the men s distance medley relay with Tony Clement, Jarell Warren and Scott Cooper. OU is one of eight teams from the Big 12 Conference rated in the top 25, a nation s best, including five in the top 10. Other individuals ranked in the top 25 include high jumper Paul Gill at No. 10, freshman Mookie Salaam at No. 12 in the 200-meter dash, K.P. Singh at No. 17 in the weight throw and Scott Cooper at No. 16 in the 800-meter run. OU opened 2009 on Jan. 9 with the Arkansas Invitational and returned two weeks later for the Razorback Invitational. This weekend s trip marks the third of the year and Oklahoma will return in three weeks for the NCAA Last Chance Qualifier on March 7. On top of the indoor season, OU will travel to Fayetteville three times during the outdoor season for the John McDonnell Invitational (April 18) and the Arkansas Twilight (May 1). The Sooners will wrap up the season with the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville.
