SAIL POINTS WINNERS JULY 2014 Ken Campbell, Dick Carver, Greg Dawe, Rich Rogers, Lon Wahler, Tom Gardner Missing from the picture (They took off too quickly) Filippo Busalacchi, Kim Robbins, Dennis Frost July marks the first Sail Points Race where awards have been given out for First through Third places. It is very customary in most Yacht Clubs that Wet Wednesday, or Friday night Beer Can races are celebrated at the conclusion the race with the final scores and the presentations of some modest award. Cheers all round for the winners, thanks to the RD & race committee... then some fine libations from bar and food from a kitchen. Well we can't order up from the bar and the kitchen isn't real close by. But the 1
Board felt that trying to get folks to stay around for just a few minutes to celebrate the day s event was worthwhile. So getting the score recorded and announced at the end of the races was the first goal and then, since we had the scores let s give out some awards than rather than at some later time. It didn't quite get executed as we would hope but we had fun anyway. We will do better next month. Here are the Medal results for July's Sail Points Races: Soling 50 Gold - Ken Campbell Silver- Filippo Busalacchi Bronze - Greg Dawe Best of the Rest - Kim Robbins Santa Barbara Gold - Ken Campbell Silver- Dennis Frost Bronze - Lon Wahler Best of the Rest - Tom Gardner IOM Gold - Greg Dawe Silver- Ken Campbell Bronze - Dick Carver Best of the Rest - Kim Robbins ODOM Gold - Greg Dawe Silver- Ken Campbell Bronze - Rich Rogers Best of the Rest - Lon Wahler So you might ask: What is a "Best of the Rest Award? It s 4th place. Well to be truthful it is the award you want to give away as soon as you can. And guess what, you can at the next points races. Tom, Kim and Lon have the heavy responsibility of bringing their metals back next month and try to give them away. That as it turns out is easily done. They either place 3rd or higher or place 5th or lower. The Best of the Rest is a revolving medallion that will transfer from Points Race to Points Race as it is passed on from one skipper to the next. We will be giving awards out at the end of each Sail Points Race Day for the remainder of the year. Then the Board will reassess the practice based on feedback from our competitors. The entry fee of $3.00 pays for the cost as long as we have 30 boats entering races - which is pretty common. Our hope is that this just brings some cheer to the afternoon, allows us to share a little at the end of the race and allow racers to have a bit of a memento when they are lucky to have a great day. If I ever get a Gold for the Soling 50. I am framing in in a shadow box and engraving it with the date...but who knows which points race that might be. Heck...I would be proud of just getting best of the rest for a month. Have fun out there. Tom Gardner - Secretary Commodore Not Running for Reelection Commodore Hallberg announced at the July Sale Points Races that, after four years as Commodore, he will not stand for reelection for 2015. He stated that he was proud to have served, especially during the 2012 Race Week. He further stated that he is nominating and supporting Mike Eldred for the office of Commodore for 2015. (Editor s Note I hope all members thank Mark for his service. Having worked with him for two of his Commodore years I know how difficult it can be something like sailing in a hurricane see last months WAVE ).
