Photo courtesy of Pentair Water Pool and Spa University POSSIBLE RECORD HIGH GRADE POINT AVERAGE FOR PENTAIR GROUP ATTENDING CPO CERTIFICATION COURSE Addie Kassouni of Elk Grove, California was the first participant chosen for the Century /Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) pool and spa energy efficiency equipment upgrade promotion. Century, a subsidiary of Regal-Beloit Corporation, a leader in innovative electric motors to the pool/spa industry, is on a quest to show the world how its V-Green motors can reduce energy costs in the operation of pools and spas. Sanford, N.C. May 15-16, 2012. Michael Orr, of the Foundation for Pool and Spa Industry Education (FPSIE), conducted another successful CPO Certification Course at Pentair Aquatic Systems East Coast headquarters in Sanford, North Carolina. To say that the class was heady may be a slight understatement (me excluded!); attendees included development engineers, product managers, national trainers, and other key members of the Pentair organization. Looking around the room, one may have thought FPSIE s Michael Orr was there to discuss Ludwig von Bertalanffy s General System Theory or Bernoulli s equation, but instead he delivered spectacularly smooth flowing, accurate, up-to-date CPO course information. Many times during the two-day event, questions from the group allowed Orr to dig into his vast knowledge of the pool-and-spa industry, sharing real world scenarios and drawing direct correlations between development engineering, maintenance practices, and regulations. His engineering background was a great asset with this group. As some of you may know, engineers think a bit differently than the rest of us. I say so with a great deal of respect. Orr has a true talent for relaying information and experience to anyone he stands before and conducting himself in a professional, non-intimidating way. I, as a trainer, have learned from him. So, back to the class... After each CPO training phase (chemicals, regulations, etc.), class attendees were given quiz questions that were answered using a wireless audience response answering device that displayed the answer percentages given for each multiple-choice question on the screen. As hard as we all tried to (Continued on Page 2) In cooperation with SMUD and its energy partner for pools and spas, Foundation for Pool and Spa Industry Education (FPSIE), Century is in the process of selecting SMUD customers to participate in an innovative program where Century donates V-Green motors to selected SMUD customers to participate in exchange for the opportunity to collect and publicize the energy consumption data from the customer's existing motor for comparison with the data from the V- Green motor after it is installed. FPSIE spokesperson, Fred Hare, who participated in the selection of Addie's pool for participation in the promotion, speculated in his recommendation that "at least a fifty percent (50%) reduction in energy consumption can be achieved with the installation of a V-Green variable speed motor to replace the existing older single speed motor on Addie's pool circulation system." PENTAIR GROUP (Continued from Page 1) be perfect, at times one of us would slip up and select the one answer that had no resemblance to anything that had been discussed. Some of the answers were never discussed in the CPO course and, in some cases, were meant to be humorous, which kept class attendees laughing and more relaxed. Everyone took this course seriously and, like the rest of us, was a bit intimidated with the fact that there was a test at the end. Overall, everyone attending the CPO course at Pentair scored quite high on the final exam (let s leave out it was open book) and walked away more excited about our industry and much more knowledgeable. - John Cameron, Technical Trainer, Pentair Aquatic Systems COURSE SPOTLIGHT Certified Aquatic Energy Auditor The Certified Aquatic Energy Auditor (CAEA) Course was designed for aquatic professionals to audit and recommend energy efficiency improvements for swimming pool owners. The class is useful for service techs, builders, retail staff and manufacturer representatives to learn the components necessary to perform an audit and recommend energy savings. By taking this 4-6 hours online course, you will become a Certified Aquatic Energy Auditor and will help homeowners save money. The online course comes with a 62- page color handbook and can be accessed 24/7/365. To enroll, call (916) 922-8895, go to www.fpsie.org, or scan this into you phone or tablet. ADDIE KASSOUNI (Continued from Page 1) Photo by Brian Long Photography Converging at Addie s for the retro-fit was, left to right, Century s Paul Lin and Bill DeCorrevont, Addie Kassouni and SMUD s Paula Robertson and Brooks Hillian. selection process involves the selection of a mutually agreeable (amongst all the parties) contractor to work with the Century and SMUD teams to collect the "before" and "after" data, remove the existing motor and install the new V- Green motor. Selecting such a contractor can sometimes be the hardest part of the participant selection process. In Addie's case, selecting the contractor was "a-piece-of-cake." Deon Nesson, owner of All Clear Pools & Spas of Elk Grove, has cared for Addie's pool "forever" and when asked about doing the installation he immediately responded: "No problem; we love Addie; we'll be there." And, after flying through the contractor qualifying process, All Clear Pools & Spas was selected for Addie's motor installation. Century, SMUD and FPSIE representatives, along with All Clear Pools and Spas' representatives, converged at Addie's for the installation. Fred Hare's earlier projection of "at least a fifty percent (50%) reduction of energy consumption" proved to be conservative. The "before" watts usage of the older single speed motor running at 3450 RPMs was 1365 watts. The "after" watts usage of the V-Green variable speed motor running at 1725 RPMs was 280 watts. Of course, running at half speed, the pump will only pump half the amount of water, so the V-Green motor controller was programmed to run on high speed, 3450 RPMs, during the time that the pool cleaner was in operation and on low speed for the balance of the time required to pump all the pool's water, 14,300 gallons, through the filter once daily. Because Addie has considerable foliage around her pool, the extended pump run time will help keep debris from creating stains on the pool's plaster. When all was said-and-done, Addie's electrical power usage for the pool's circulation pump was reduced almost 78%. FRESNO DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SEMINAR I was pleased to be invited by the Fresno Department of Environmental Health on May 2, 2012, to present a three-hour seminar on inspecting public swimming pools. For a number of years I have served as an adviser to the Northern California Bay Area Swimming Pool Committee, which meets bi-monthly at the Alameda County Environmental Health Department, and have offered to travel to each member s county to talk about subjects of interest to the members of their operation--i was happy to be of service to Fresno County. The Fresno seminar discussed new changes in the Title 24 Code of Regulation that affect new construction and retrofits to commercial swimming pools. I also spoke about the upcoming review and change to the Title 22 Code of Regulation for commercial swimming pools. Most of the seminar was about important items when performing a swimming pool inspection. The topic was especially helpful for cross-training the county s food inspectors for potential poolinspector service. FPSIE, which is committed to all forms of pooland-spa industry education and is available to all who seek education to help them with their career path to success, has many interactive education programs that allow class attendees to actively participate by using PowerPoint polling technology to bring a greater learning experience. I thank Daniel Betancur, a former CPO student and now an employee member of the Fresno Environmental Health Committee, for arranging this training seminar. I also thank the Director of Environmental Health, David Pomaville, R.E.H.S. for the kind words about FPSIE s service to his organization. See the letter of gratitude on page 3 of this newsletter. - Michael Orr, FPSIE Executive Director FOLLOW US ON 2 The Foundation JUNE 2012
