Fr Brendan Walsh By Amy Barrett and Cara Kennedy 19th November 2004 Our new parish priest Fr. Brendan Walsh came to Annascaul in Autumn 2004. He was born on the 12th of May 1959 and is 46 years old. He has 1 brother and 3 sisters and was the second eldest. He was born in Tralee and grew up in Ballylongford. He went to Ballylongford Primary School. His favourite subject at school was history and least favourite subject was maths. He has always wanted to be a priest and knew he was going to be one. He left Ballylongford in 1977 at the age of 28. The first church where he was priest was Killorglin. He then went on from there to be priest in Beaufort, Castletownbere, Killarney, Tralee and finally Annascaul. He liked all the parishes and had no favourite in particular. He prefers to be called Fr. Brendan rather than Father Walsh and his favourite Bible story is The Prodigal Son. He has always visited the parish schools regularly as he does now and likes it here in Annascaul. He goes back to Ballylongford every Sunday. That was our interview with Fr. Brendan Walsh and we hope he will be with us for a long time. Short Story Once there was a young man who lived with his poor mother and father and his little brother. One day he decided to set out to seek his fortune. He had just returned from the army when he set out. He went to the market and sold his uniform and his service revolver. Altogether it came to just enough for his fare to New York and some food. He got on the big steamboat and off he went. When he arrived in New York he was welcomed by a mugger who was disappointed to find he was in no way wealthy and a group of kids who threw stones at him. He got a job in a market and a flat nearby. One day when he was working at the market he saw a shifty looking character standing around waiting. A young man spoke to him briefly and then casually strolled up to him and filled his pockets from the cash register. He resisted and managed to trip the robber and took him to the police. He later became a policeman and helped catch several big time criminals. He eventually returned to Ireland and got married. He died of bad cause pneumonia in his family home. Annascaul GAA Annascaul have had a mixed year so far in the County League. Their most recent match came last Saturday against Kerins O Rahilly s where they won by a point. There was a thrilling climax to the game with Annascaul winning by 0-13 to 1-9. It was their first victory in the league this year. They have already had draws with St Mary s and Dingle. Annascaul are now in ninth and steadily pulling away from the relegation zone. They now have four points and they may need two more wins to stay safe. That win against Strand Road is a major boost for the team. Annascaul now play Milltown-Castlemaine who are mid table in the league. It will be a tough game but with home advantage Annascaul should edge it. In other competitions Annascaul were knocked out of the intermediate championship by Castleisland Desmonds. It was a poor match and Desmonds won by 1-12 to 0-13. The Annascaul b team have done very well this year winning most of their games. Annascaul also have a good representation on the West Kerry team this year. At underage level it has been an average year. The minors did very well this year in the County league. This year Annascaul have a Kerry minor playing with them. Eamon Hickson of the Annascaul minor and senior teams lined out at centre-back against Limerick. They won that match comfortably. Annascaul only have the league left but they should survive. Later in the year the West Kerry championship will be on. Until then all focus on the league. Chess Champions Annascaul Chess Masters are Unbeatable Scoil Bhreac Chluain s chess team remained unbeaten throughout the Kerry heats of the scholastic Irish Chess competition. They then represented Kerry in the All Ireland Chess championships in Limerick. The four team members were Cara Kennedy, Cian Kennedy, Daniel O Connell and Kate O Donnell. A special thanks is extended to Eileen Kennedy who trained the chess team, and runs an after school chess club in the school every Thursday.

We won that and represented Kerry in Limerick. We each got a medal. In Limerick we played two matches one against Waterford and the other against Cork. Unfortunately we did not win but we were proud to represent Kerry. Karen O Connor

Main School Tour On the 16th of June 1st to 5th classes went on our school tour. We had a choice of going mountain climbing, kayaking and orienteering. I chose to go kayaking and orienteering. When I went kayaking I fell off twice. The first time I fell off on purpose and the second time I was pushed off. When I went orienteering we had to go off finding boards and print little holes on to a sheet and then we had to answer questions. Most people wanted to go rock climbing, those who did had great fun and found it much scarier than they imagined. Overall we had a great day out. Sean Kennedy School Tours 6th Class It is a tradition for every sixth class to go to Dublin on their tour as a farewell gesture. We travel up on the train and the Parents Committee very kindly pay for a private bus around the city. The bus will carry us wherever we want to go. This year we went on the Viking Splash Tour, Croke Park and the Wax Museum. The Viking Splash is a very interesting tour of Dublin city. The tour guide shows us important buildings in Dublin and at the end we plunge into the Grand Canal and float around. After that it was off to Croke Park where we got the full tour of the stadium. We all agreed what a marvellous building it is. We then went to the wax museum. The main exhibition there was very impressive. In the chamber of horrors the models are so real it makes it very scary. We then went shopping in Grafton Street for a half an hour. It was then time to get back on the train. We all agreed it was the best tour we had been on. Conor Guilfoyle Congratulations to all of the children in Scoil Bhreac Chluain who paticipated in the Keel Athletics Competition. The children who received medals were Kayrena Fitzgerald, Patrick O Shea, Daniel O Connell, Alan Falvey, Jerry Foley, Jack O Conner, Danny Rigg, Niamh Kennedy, Lilly Kennedy, Ciara Kennedy, Hannah McCarthy, Aoife Falvey, Brian Kennedy and Chloe Kennedy Quiz Sports Day John, Maurice & Gary Q1.Who was the leader of Germany in World War 1?
