AUGUST CORNWALL GOLF PARTNERSHIP NEWSLETTER CORNWALL DEVELOPMENT OFFICERS NEWS. Upcoming Events in 2012

Transcription:

Welcome to our bi-monthly newsletter about our running club, here in Paphos. It includes information about the races we ve participated in, our results, any general information about us and what preparations we re doing for upcoming races. July / August Well as you would expect the weather was hot and very humid and we were all looking forward to the annual races in Paphos, held in the searing heat. The first race was the 4km race along the Spirou Kyprianou Road and back, except no one told us that they had brought the race date forward by a week. We were all disappointed and our only solace was that very few other runners knew of the date change we hear only 15 runners turned up for the event the municipality must have been upset. We ll have to be more proactive next year, so we can participate and bring home the trophies. Ready for the off...at Geriskipou The second race was on 3 rd August in Geriskipou it s an annual race to honour local hero Yiannakis Taliotis and starts from the village square after the religious and commemorative services have been completed. A good number of us turned up completed the race but only Dave managed to win a trophy finishing first in his age group.

Allan and John believe they finished 4 th in their respective age groups and none of the women got any trophies at all, because the race organisers didn t award any for the individual age groups. They only awarded trophies for the top three women places overall. We challenged the organisers, as this wasn t the case last year and they said they would change it going forward. We think it was just a ploy because we field so many women runners we inevitably win most of the trophies. Allan was impressed with Fiona and Angela who finished right behind him their hill work on Monday s really paid off as they closed in on him during the final stages. Here are some photos of the club members approaching the finishing line.

There was another race in Agros on the 31 st August, but there was only a very limited response and eventually we didn t send anyone. We had a great couple of months, welcoming new runners to the club Angela, Chris Coleman, Julie and Chris and we also had a number of runners join us while they re over here on holiday. Some also became members Mark and Alan. So our overall membership is now 28 (as at end of August), an increase of 8 from the beginning of the year. It was really humid in August and we found it difficult to train hard except for Kiran, who s on a training plan for the Bournemouth Marathon on 5 th October. He was seen regularly running our sessions twice or even longer as he builds up his endurance. He s our only representative, so good luck to him. Relaxing after a Tuesday night session. Most of these two months Ian was off-island, but he left behind his training schedule for the 4 day challenge. I read it and was flabbergasted running on average 30km every weekend until November, in this heat, in August!!!!!!!! During July we had a spate of injuries Collette fell on Ian s Hill on a Monday night and broke her collar bone luckily Ian was able to get her to the hospital. We await her return. Sue tumbled on Barry s Pano Arodes run one Sunday morning and hurt her back. Allan tweaked his back bending over and needed a week s rest to recover. Bi-monthly meeting Our bi-monthly meeting at DT s Sunset Bar was delayed a month due to race injuries and families over here on holiday and has been rescheduled for the 1 st September. Topics to be covered will be the training schedule for the 4 day challenge and upcoming races. More detailed information will be issued as minutes of the meeting.

September / October Janet has uploaded the new race schedule for September onto the website and it s available for download. The weather will start to cool down soon and the nights will draw in, so our start times in the evenings will vary so please keep an eye on the schedule to make sure you turn up at the right time. The schedule will also reflect the rigorous training regime for the 4 day challenge, and those runners not participating should keep in contact with Allan for any changes - usually same location but shorter distances. If anyone has problems navigating the website, please contact Allan. During the summer we have noticed a large number of runners around Paphos and so Allan is planning a marketing event to try and attract more runners to the club. This will be a oneoff focused event, at the Lighthouse Beach on a Tuesday night (exact date to be confirmed). Upcoming races are: 12 th September run/walk in aid of a cancer charity starting at St George s Chapel. 13 th September, 5 km race in Nicosia Athalassa Park 5 th October - Bournemouth marathon, Kiran 18 th October, SSAFA 10 km Challenge Limassol 26 th October, Stellios Kyriakides Road Race, 10 km. Statos-Ayios, Photios 20 th - 23 rd November - 4 Day Challenge in November. For details of other forthcoming races, see our race calendar on the website.

Handicap The Club Handicap is a series of 5 races, run twice, over 10 months giving 10 races in total. Participants are awarded points depending on their individual performance. Then each participant s best 6 results are counted towards their final position in the League Table. If you don t want to compete in every event, you don t have to, although by doing so, gives you the maximum chance to win. The races are: Name your own time Beat the clock Pace control Staggered start Guess the distance We have now just gone over the halfway point in the series and the positions so far are shown in the table below.
