Liberty will meet fellow 2006 NCAA Tournament participant Marist (8-3, 2-0 MAAC) in the tournament s opening game on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at the Comcast Center. The consolation and championship games will be played Saturday at 3:30 and 6 p.m., with defending national champion Maryland and UNC Greensboro being the possible opponents. The Last Time Out Shavonte Zellous scored 17 of her game-high 23 points after halftime, allowing then-unbeaten, No. 22/22 Pittsburgh to overcome an eight-point, second-half deficit and defeat Liberty, 54-47, on Dec. 20 at the Caribbean Classic in Cancun, Mexico. Lady Flames On The Air All Lady Flames basketball games can be heard LIVE on WWMC 90.9 FM "The Light." Jamie Hall, who is celebrating his 13th year of broadcasting Lady Flames basketball, will once again be handling the courtside play-by-play duties for all road games and selected home contests. Green has accumulated a 172-57 record in his seven-plus years on the Liberty bench, good for a winning percentage of.751. He ranked ninth among active NCAA Division I women s basketball coaches in that category, entering the season. Liberty has won the Big South Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of Green s seven seasons as the Lady Flames head coach. Liberty has totaled 23 or more victories in six of those years, including the 2004-05 season that saw the Lady Flames reach the Sweet 16 for the first time in the program s history. Green has actually been to the postseason in each of his last 19 seasons as a women s basketball coach, a span which includes a dozen years as an assistant coach at Clemson. In all but one of those 19 appearances, he has experienced the NCAA Tournament. The 2005-06 season represented one of the best coaching jobs of Green s career. The Lady Flames had lost the top four scorers from the Sweet 16 squad to graduation. Moreover, freshman Megan Frazee averaged 18.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game through the first 14 games of her collegiate career, but was lost for the remainder of the season due to injury. Yet, Liberty was still able to win 25 games, its 10th-straight Big South title and its 10th-consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. Green s efforts were recognized by both the Big South Conference and the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID). Both groups named Green as their women s basketball coach of the year at season s end. It was the third time that he has won each of those honors and is the second-straight time Green was selected as the VaSID Coach of the Year. A key late-season conference victory over High Point made Green the winningest coach in Big South Conference history. The previous season, Green had passed Rick Reeves as Liberty s career wins leader. That was just one of the many reasons that the 2004-05 year was a special one on Liberty Mountain. A senior-laden Lady Flames team recorded upset wins over No. 4 seed Penn State (78-70) and No. 5 seed DePaul (88-79) in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, becoming just the second team ever to advance to the Sweet 16 as a No. 13 seed. The Lady Flames ended the season with their highest national ranking to date, 21st (USA Today/ESPN). Even with all his accolades, Green is not yet satisfied. The native of Louisville, Tenn., located just outside of Knoxville, knows there s work yet to be done with the Lady Flames. We have some tremendous challenges ahead of us and I believe the team will be up to those challenges, Green says. I am pleased with the direction and progress of our program but of course, I, as well as the team, have higher aspirations, goals and expectations. Green s track record shows that he has the ability to meet those challenges. The Lady Flames have recorded two wins over Virginia and West Virginia and victories over No. 19 DePaul, No. 17 Kansas State, No. 25 Penn State, Wake Forest and UNLV during Green s tenure. The upset victory over the 25th-ranked Cavaliers in 2003 marked Liberty s first win over a Top 25 team. His record against conference foes is equally impressive, as he led the Lady Flames to a Big South record 46-game winning streak and currently has a.941 (112-7) winning percentage against conference teams. Green has marched through conference play with one or fewer setbacks five times in his seven years, while guiding the Lady Flames to two undefeated conference seasons.

Last year, the Red Foxes went 23-7, set a school record for single-season victories and lost to Georgia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Red Foxes, off to an 8-3 start this season, received two votes in last week s ESPN/USA Today Top 25 poll. A stout defensive unit, Marist ranks ninth in the nation, allowing just 54.3 ppg. Alisa Kresge, a 5-7 senior guard, is the two-time reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Year and currently ranks 15th nationally with 6.2 apg. The team is led in scoring by a freshman, 6-0 forward Rachele Fitz. The rookie posts 14.2 ppg and 5.3 rpg off the bench. Meg Dahlman, a 6-3 junior forward/center, was a first-team All-MAAC selection and the MAAC Tournament MVP a season ago. This year, she is posting 11.4 ppg and a team-high 6.5 rpg. The Coaching Matchup Liberty Head Coach Carey Green is in his eighth season with the Lady Flames. He owns a 172-57 career record and is the all-time wins leader at Liberty and among Big South women s basketball coaches. His career winning percentage (.751) ranked ninth among active NCAA Division I women s basketball coaches at the season s outset. Brian Giorgis, at the helm of the Red Foxes for the fifth season, is 86-44 as Marist s head coach. He has earned at least a share of MAAC Coach of the Year honors three years in a row. Giorgis has guided three-consecutive Marist squads to 20-win seasons. Series Record Friday afternoon s game will mark the first-ever meeting between the Lady Flames and the Red Foxes. Liberty vs. Marist First Meeting Liberty vs. MAAC Liberty is 5-4 in nine lifetime match-ups with current members of the MAAC. The Lady Flames are 1-1 versus Canisius, 3-0 versus Loyola (Md.), 0-1 versus Manhattan, 0-1 versus Rider and 1-1 versus St. Peter s. The Lady Flames most recent contest against a MAAC foe was a 70-63 victory over Loyola (Md.) at the Vines Center on Jan. 10, 2006. Megan Frazee paced Liberty with 24 points and 13 rebounds against the Greyhounds. Liberty Tournament History -- The Flames are 33-51 all-time during regular season tournaments. -- Liberty is 12-18 during regular season tournaments under Carey Green s direction. -- The Lady Flames have gone 2-0 at a regular season tournament seven times. The Terrapins won their title with one junior, two sophomores and two freshmen in the starting line-up and are an overwhelming favorite to repeat their championship this season. The Terrapins have won their first 13 games of the 2006-07 season by an average of 32.3 ppg and are ranked first in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today Top 25 polls. Crystal Langhorne, a 6-3 junior forward/center, was a second-team All-American last season and is off to another great start this year. All five Terrapin starters are averaging double figures, but Langhorne leads the way at 15.2 ppg and 8.1 rpg. She also paces the nation with a.792 field goal percentage. Shay Doron, a 5-9 senior guard, averages 13.6 ppg. Maryland, the second-leading scoring team in America with 87.1 ppg, has won 13-consecutive games at the Comcast Center, including all six this season. The Coaching Matchup Liberty Head Coach Carey Green is in his eighth season with the Lady Flames. He owns a 172-57 career record and is the all-time wins leader at Liberty and among Big South women s basketball coaches. His career winning percentage (.751) ranked ninth among active NCAA Division I women s basketball coaches at the season s outset. Brenda Frese, the 2002 AP National Coach of the Year while at Minnesota, is in her fifth year at Maryland. Her record with the Terrapins is 97-45 entering the Terrapin Classic. All five starters return from that squad, including Kristen Boone, a first-team All-SoCon honoree last season. Boone, a 5-5 junior guard, currently ranks second nationally with 3.9 spg and helps the Spartans rank second as a team with 13.5 spg. Jasmine Byrd, a 5-7 senior guard, leads UNCG with 16.7 ppg and has hit 26 three-pointers already this season. She is 55 points shy of 1,000 for her career. KaLeah Latham, a 5-10 senior forward, is averaging 8.7 ppg and 5.6 rpg, leading the team in the latter category. UNC Greensboro owns a pair of wins over Big South opponents, defeating Coastal Carolina by a 64-54 margin and High Point by a 63-53 score. That marks the longest string of consecutive made free throws by a Liberty women s basketball player since Kristal Tharp also sank 20-straight charity tosses during the 2003-04 season. Big South Player of the Week x 3 Megan Frazee has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Player of the Week on three occasions this season. The sophomore, who has now captured this award five times in her career, garnered her most recent honor on Dec. 11 after averaging 21.0 ppg and 11.0 rpg in the Lady Flames contests against Virginia Tech and No. 19 George Washington. Frazee led all players with 28 points and 10 rebounds against the nationally-ranked Colonials. Points Hard to Come By Liberty limited Virginia Union to 49 points on Dec. 16. The Lady Flames have now held three opponents under the 50-point mark this season. Liberty is on track for one of its best defensive seasons in program history. Opponents are averaging just 56.0 ppg, a mark which would rank fourth on Liberty s alltime list. The 2002-03 Lady Flames, who yielded only 54.7 ppg, hold the school record. Home Sweet Home In recent years, the Furnace has been anything but warm to opponents. Under Head Coach Carey Green, the Lady Flames are 87-11 (.888) at home. Liberty went 15-0 at the Vines Center last season, marking the fourth time in school history that the Lady Flames have enjoyed a perfect home record. Last season, Liberty was 4-3 in the final month of the calendar year. Under Head Coach Carey Green, the Lady Flames have posted a 25-26 mark in December, including a 1-4 mark this season. This season, Liberty has seven games scheduled during December, including five contests away from the Vines Center. Only four of the Lady Flames first 13 games this season will be played in Lynchburg. Rewriting the Record Book Liberty set a Vines Center record for field goal percentage defense on Nov. 16 when it limited Columbia Union to 13.3 percent (8-60) shooting from the floor. The Lady Flames 97 points represented the team s largest scoring output since the team defeated Cedarville, 103-61, on Dec. 13, 1997 and are the most points Liberty has scored under Carey Green s direction. The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same With zero seniors graduating from last year s Liberty team and no freshmen joining this year s squad, Lady Flames Head Coach Carey Green has the rare luxury of suiting up the exact same 14 players for two-consecutive seasons. He also returns his entire coaching staff from the 2005-06 campaign. Championship Streaks Continue The Lady Flames current streak of dominance in the Big South Conference puts them among the nation s longest conference championship runs. Liberty hoisted the Big South Championship trophy for the 10th-straight year a season ago, keeping alive the second-longest active string of conference tournament titles in the nation. Only Old Dominion, among NCAA Division I teams, currently owns a longer streak, having won 15-consecutive CAA conference crowns. Liberty has also earned nine-straight Big South regular season titles. Only UC Santa Barbara, who has claimed 11-consecutive Big West regular season championships, owns a lengthier string of success. Lady Flames Set to Battle Wide Range of Non-Conference Foes This season, Liberty will battle teams from nine different Division I conferences during its non-conference slate. These include the ACC (Virginia and Virginia Tech), the America East (Binghamton), the Atlantic 10 (George Washington), the BIG EAST (Pittsburgh), the CAA (George Mason and James Madison), the MAAC (Marist), the MEAC (Norfolk State), the Patriot (American) and the Southland (Texas-Arlington). The Lady Flames could also square off with UNC Greensboro of the Southern Conference at the Terrapin Classic. Difficult Road Ahead The Lady Flames are set to face one of the most ambitious non-conference schedules in program history this season. Liberty is slated to play three teams (George Washington, Marist and Virginia Tech) which qualified for the 2006 NCAA Tournament and could meet a fourth, defending national champion Maryland, at the Dec. 29-30 Terrapin Classic. Three other foes on the Lady Flames 2006-07 schedule (James Madison, Pittsburgh and Virginia) participated in the Women s NIT Tournament a season ago. Pittsburgh was a semifinalist in the event. Eight of Liberty s nine non-conference games which will be played away from the Vines Center come against teams that posted winning records during the 2005-06 season.

Six different Lady Flames connected at least once from behind the arc during the game. Green Tops in Big South Liberty Head Coach Carey Green currently ranks as the winningest coach in Big South Conference history with a.751 winning percentage. His 172 career wins also put him atop the conference s coaches. Green is 91-7 in Big South Conference games. Nine conference wins this season will allow him to become the Big South s all-time leader in conference victories. Luby Lichonczak, who coached at Radford from 1990-2001, currently leads that category with 99 Big South triumphs. Liberty s best non-conference season came in 1997-98 when the Lady Flames went 14-1 outside the Big South. The Lady Flames only non-conference loss that season came to eventual national champion Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Flames were 12-5 in non-conference tilts a season ago and are 6-5 outside the Big South this season. Lady Flames Excel in the Classroom Liberty is not only enjoying a string of success on the hardwood, but the Lady Flames have received national recognition for their work in the classroom. Liberty tied with Lehigh for 14th in the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Top 25 Honor Roll this past season on the strength of its 3.338 team GPA. Lehigh Susan Troyan 3.338 Big South Conference 2006 Preseason Rankings & All-Conference Team Liberty has been picked to win the Big South Conference title for the 11th-straight season, sophomore guard/forward Megan Frazee was tabbed as the Big South Preseason Player of the Year and junior guard Allyson Fasnacht was named to the Big South All-Conference Team for the second straight year. These distinctions were the result of a poll taken by the conference head coaches, sports information directors and selected media. The Lady Flames, who return their entire 14-player roster from last season, received 21 of a possible 26 first-place votes and 202 total points to easily outdistance High Point. Liberty was 13-1 in conference play a season ago and captured the Big South Championship for the 10th-consecutive time. High Point, which dealt Liberty its only regular season loss and was the runner-up of the conference tournament, took four first-place votes and racked up 178 total points, finishing second in the balloting. Winthrop, the most improved team in the conference a season ago, got 136 points to rank third. Coastal Carolina was tabbed to finish fourth with 117 points. Radford picked up the last remaining first-place vote and was selected fifth with a total of 115 points. UNC Asheville, the host of the 2007 Big South Championship, was picked sixth with 100 points. Birmingham-Southern and Charleston Southern shared seventh place with 44 points apiece. Frazee, who was averaging 18.5 ppg and 9.8 rpg as a freshman before an ACL injury during game 14 ended her season, is the first Liberty player to be selected Big South Preseason Player of the Year since Katie Feenstra in 2004. Fasnacht is coming off of a season that saw her be named to the Big South All-Conference first-team roster and take home Big South Championship MVP honors. Her 31 points is believed to equal a school record for points in one half. Elena Kisseleva tallied 31 points in the second half of a 96-90 win over Akron on Dec. 7, 1996. Frazee s 37 points represents the third-highest single-game scoring output in program history. Katie Feenstra holds the record with 40 points, a standard she established on Feb. 3, 2004 against Winthrop. Triple the Trouble The Nov. 11 season opener against Norfolk State marked the first time that all three Frazee triplets (Megan, Molly and Moriah) scored in double figures in the same contest since arriving at Liberty. Megan led the way with 19 points, Moriah added 14 and Molly matched her then-career high with 10 markers. The trio pulled off the same feat in a Nov. 14 game at George Mason, as Megan totaled 25 points, Moriah had 15 and Molly again scored 10. Megan, Molly and Moriah were all included in the Liberty starting lineup on Nov. 29 at James Madison, marking the first time that all three triplets have started together at Liberty. The Frazees have now started together six-straight times. The triplets currently account for 35.2 ppg and 19.2 rpg. That represents 52.7 percent of the Lady Flames total scoring output and 44.1 percent of the team s total rebounds. The Frazees, the only set of triplets currently playing Division I women s basketball, are currently featured on ESPN.com, as columnist Beth Mowins wrote a piece entitled, Liberty has three times the fun in Frazee triplets. Sparkling Seniors Four seniors (Jamie Feagin, Leslie Jones, Michelle Parker and Karolina Piotrkiewicz) are included on the Liberty roster this season. If the Lady Flames accumulate 25 or more wins this season, that quartet will graduate as the winningest class in program history. It s Not a Good Sign if... Liberty is winless this season when trailing with one minute remaining (0-5), when trailing with five minutes left (0-3), when scoring 60 points or fewer (0-3), when playing on a neutral floor (0-2) and when playing a Wednesday contest (0-2). Lack of Overtime For the second-straight season, Liberty did not play a single overtime contest in 2005-06. The last time that the Lady Flames had to play more than 40 minutes came on Jan. 6, 2004, when Liberty defeated American, 76-72, on the road in double overtime. Since that game, the Lady Flames have played 94-straight non-overtime games. The Lady Flames most recent overtime loss came on Dec. 6, 2004 against #24 Boston College at the Brown Classic. BC took a 74-70 decision in that contest. Liberty s last overtime contest at the Vines Center was a memorable one. The Lady Flames defeated Virginia, 77-69, in overtime on Nov. 26, 2002, to claim their first-ever win over the Cavaliers. A Fast Start for Frazee Megan Frazee has played only 25 games in a Liberty uniform, yet she has scored more career points (469) than any of her teammates, an average of 18.8 ppg. Liberty s bench performers have outscored their opponent s non-starters in eight of nine games thus far, by an average of 14.8 ppg. Opponents reserves have been limited to 10 points or fewer five times. Long Distance Connection The Lady Flames have made at least one three-pointer in 51-straight games, a streak which began on Jan. 26, 2005. This is Liberty s longest such streak since the Lady Flames went 82-consecutive games with a three-pointer between Jan. 24, 1998 and Dec. 20, 2000. Ripping Down the Rebounds In eight out of 11 games this season, Liberty has won the rebounding battle. The Lady Flames are outrebounding opponents by 10.0 caroms per game, a figure which leads the Big South and ranked eighth nationally in the most recent NCAA statistical report. Such dominance on the boards is nothing new for the Lady Flames, who led the nation in rebounding margin in 2003-04 and 2004-05 and ranked third in the category a season ago. Sophomore Megan Frazee has been Liberty s most proficient rebounder thus far, pulling down 9.3 rpg. Stingy Defense The Lady Flames have made it very difficult for opponents to score this season. Liberty foes are shooting just 33.6 percent from the field, a statistic which ranks 10th in the nation. Liberty has held opponents field goal percentages to 30 percent or lower in eight of 22 halves this season. Excellence at the Charity Stripe Sophomore Molly Frazee has reversed her fortunes at the foul line from last season. As a freshman, Frazee connected on just 41.4 percent of her free throws. This year, she is shooting foul shots at a 79.5 percent rate, ranking second in the Big South in that category. Sister Megan Frazee is also proficient from the charity stripe. She is the fourthleading free throw shooter in the conference at 78.3 percent and shoots at a 74.8 percent clip for her career. Junior guard Allyson Fasnacht is a 79.4 percent free throw shooter for her career. If she can continue sinking foul shots at that rate, she will break Kristi Mercer s career program record of 79.2 percent. Game 1 Lynchburg, Va. Sophomore Megan Frazee excelled in her return from a knee injury, leading all players with 19 points and 13 rebounds in Liberty s season opener and home opener, a 91-53 win over the Norfolk State Spartans. Consecutive three-pointers by the Spartans Tiffany Jenkins highlighted a 13-1 run which gave the visitors a 14-7 lead with 14:20 showing on the first-half clock. Norfolk State s lead stood at 25-23 before Molly Frazee ignited a 20-0 Liberty run with a three-pointer. Much of the surge came with the Lady Flames second unit on the floor. Liberty sophomore Rebecca Lightfoot notched five points during the run and the Lady Flames forced 15-consecutive missed shots by Norfolk State. Liberty took a 47-27 advantage into the locker room. Early in the second half, the Spartans trimmed the lead to 18 (55-37) on a Toia Johnson three-pointer at the 15:43 mark. The Lady Flames then put the game away with an 18-3 burst which included eight free throws. Moriah Frazee s layup at 8:10 of the second half made the score 73-40, Liberty. From that point on, the Lady Flames cruised to a 91-53 victory. Eleven of the Liberty players who saw action reached the scoring column, helping the Lady Flames score their most points since totaling 94 in a Dec. 4, 1999 game at Richmond. Liberty outrebounded the visitors, 62-37, and dished out 25 assists. Five Lady Flames, includnig all three Frazee triplets, reached double figures. Game 3 Lynchburg, Va. Liberty jumped out to a 16-0 lead and never looked back, cruising to its thirdconsecutive win to start the year and its 21st-straight victory at the Vines Center, a 97-27 triumph over Columbia Union. Courtney Watkins tallied five points during the game-opening 16-0 run as the Lady Flames kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard for the first 6:15 of play. Megan Frazee s shot in the paint capped a 19-0 surge later in the opening half, giving Liberty a 45-6 advantage 2:20 before halftime. The home team s lead stood at 47-8 at intermission. Columbia Union s Lisa Brewer tossed in all of her team-high 10 points after the half, but Liberty was able to go on to claim a 97-27 win. The point total was the Lady Flames highest singlegame output during Head Coach Carey Green s tenure and was the team s most since a 103-61 win over Cedarville on Dec. 13, 1997. Liberty sophomore Megan Frazee scored 31 of her career-high 37 points after halftime, enabling the Lady Flames to erase a nine-point second-half deficit and claim a 75-71 win at Virginia. The victory was Liberty s second-ever triumph against its in-state rival and was the Cavaliers firstever loss in the new John Paul Jones Arena. The home team got off to a fast start, taking a 14-1 lead at the 13:17 mark of the first half. Liberty chipped away at the Virginia advantage and took its first lead, 32-30, at 2:44, when Michelle Parker scored the third of three-consecutive transition baskets for the Lady Flames. Binghamton used the three-point arc to close the gap, sinking a pair of shots from long distance during a 12-2 run. Laura Sario s bank shot at 1:50 closed the burst and cut the visitors advantage to 18-17. The victory improved the Hokies all-time record against the Lady Flames to 13-0 and snapped Liberty s 21- game home winning streak. The visitors jumped out to an early, 6-2 lead. Roli-Ann Nikagbatse s fast break lay-up at 15:27 gave the Lady Flames their first lead, 10-9, and was part of an 8-0 run. Liberty led by as many as 10 points, 26-16, before Virginia Tech closed the half on a 7-3 run, featuring back-to-back Kirby Copeland lay-ups. Liberty s advantage at the intermission stood at 29-23. All 11 players who saw action for Liberty found the scoring column, helping the Lady Flames snap a three-game losing skid with a comfortable, 66-49 win over visiting Virginia Union. The Panthers led by as many as three points in the game s early stages. Virginia Union owned an 18-17 advantage after Ashley Hill s third three-pointer of the opening half at 6:27. Liberty then turned up its defensive pressure, holding the visitors without a point for the next 6:05 of play. Meanwhile, the Lady Flames closed the half on a 16-2 run, featuring seven Moriah Frazee markers. Liberty took a 33-20 lead into the locker room. Roli-Ann Nikagbatse tallied five points during a 13-3 run halfway through the second half. Her jumper with 12:52 showing on the game clock lifted the Lady Flames to their largest lead of the game, 52-27. Virginia Union used separate runs of 6-1 and 10-1 to claw back into the contest.
